I agree, I was more impressed with the first few listens, but I've actually lost interest. That's not to say it's bad.

I'm glad I caught them live during their Rush of Blood to the Head tour in '03. Perfect blend of their best songs from Parachutes and AROBTTH. Plus they played awesome new songs like Poor Me, which SHOULD have been the type of sound the band worked with for their third album. Hopefully they'll go back to expanding upon that someday, because it was awesome. I stood there in awe as they played the song live.

I don't even GET Cold Play. I like that Speed of Sound song, but the other songs on the album aren't even from this planet. Unlistenable. That lead guy's voice cracks up and is so out of tune, it's actually funny. I laughed after listening to a few songs. I like all kinds of music, as long as it isn't bad. Cold Play is atrocious.

And yeah, it is a big deal if they're making music for money and friends. That's not what music is about to me, so I don't really see what point you're trying to make.

It's cool if you don't care that they're in it for the money - MAKE TRADE FAIR - but I think they're a really lame band that makes ambient elevator rock.

Either way, they suck. And their music is boring.

There are mainstream bands who JUST want to make a living and not make good music, and then there are those bands who realize that yes, they are musicians and they need to truly make it count.
