One For All 6-Device Universal Remote (URC-6131n) - $13.00

Unfortunately my digicam's not with me at the moment, otherwise I'd be able to provide a better picture. Still, this remote isn't about aesthetics (although it looks nice enough), it's about functionality, and it functions wonderfully. Basically, I was setting up the entertainment area in my new apartment and I wanted a remote that would be able to tie all my stuff (DVD player, DirecTiVo, audio receiver, TV, etc) together. I was honestly looking at getting one of the Harmony remotes when I stumbled across this One-For-All remote at Wal-mart. The fact that it natively supported DVRs really caught my eye, so I decided I'd give it a try. It has effectively removed the need for my other remotes. All my needed functionality is still there, down to the "thumbs up/thumbs down" keys, you can re-map keys to other locations and even across device modes, it has a master power function that fires up all your specified devices if you hold the button down for two seconds, and it cost a whopping $13. Touch-screen LCDs are nice and all, but I want my remote to be tactile and able to be used without me looking at it. So far, this fits the bill wonderfully. I'm sure it may seem like I put too much thought into my remote, but when your ass is firmly embedded in a couch, it's your lifeline to the things that make the bad voices go away.

Nice features. I couldn't use that thing, though; I've been using some $35 universal remote for the last two years and using a remote that doesn't have a screen seems off to me now.

I guess I just don't see the benefit of a screen. I don't want to look at my remote, I want to pick it up and automatically, know where the buttons are, and have it control all that I need it to, much like a keyboard. But I've honestly never used a remote with an LCD, short of at other peoples' houses.

I mean, a remote that says what you're controlling, what time it is, displays the menu when you're adding new devices and functions and crap. It's like I'm going in blind without that little screen.
