Wow, everyone on this forum hates her... but I respect her, and so should you for the following reason.

This summer, my 18 year old brother died of cancer, but before that happened, I was to do a bone marrow transplant at St. Jude's hospital (which sadly never happened, although, I was at St. Judes for 10 days). During my stay at St. Judes, my Dad told me Ashlee Simpson was going to do a free concert at one of the "apartments" where the families of many ill children stay. I went to the concert, as did 50 other people (many hairless, very sick children), and it was sooo bittersweet. She made these kids soo happy, something all of them really needed. She also sang accusticly, and she has a great voice (regardless of some recent evidence).

So next time you think about dissing her, remember that she's at the very least a decent person, if not a decent singer

I'm still not a fan, but this does remind me that people have many facets to them. All we hear is about how manufactured this woman is -- which is largely true, but she's also very human and capable of acts of great kindness and charity.

She's in the public eye as a professional singer, not a humanitarian. Until she proves herself as a capable singer, she will receive criticism, and rightfully so.

If you've watched her show you'd know that she had some really serious vocal problems when her album was just about to come up. It's all well documented, her vocal chords were fugly. It's no surprise that they still bother her from time to time, and who hasn't sounded awful live at least a few times? People just like bashing what's popularly bashed. I just think that the defense by the topic starter was mostly irrelevant. Granted, he did mention that her voice sounded fine that day, but otherwise, it came across as "I'm defending her merit as a singer by mentioning what a great person she is offstage." It was a nice anecdote, but will do little to silence the detractors who are insulting her for her singing ability. Now, if she really does have a wonderful voice, evidence to that effect will be better than anecdotal evidence of her generosity.

I don't think anyone here has a personal vendetta against Ashlee. She just happens to represent everything that is wrong with the music industry. It may be true that she has a decent voice, but this is not evident from her televised live performances. Her lyrics are trite as is her act. She seems to be attempting to mimick Avril Lavigne's career down to the last anarchy symbol. That's not to say she isn't a decent person, she's just become a scapegoat for the cause. There are thousands of excellent singer/songwriter's out there who don't have a record contract because their sister isn't Jessica Simpson.

My deepest condolences to your family. It is never easy to lose someone so early.

I think the problem alot of people have with Ashlee Simpson is that she didn't really earn her way into notoriety. Most singers start from humble beginnings and meek their way up to someone respected. Ashlee just kind of decided 'hey, singing might be cool' and used her obvious family connections and MTV to basically fabricate an image and career. Basically overnight she went from this girl-next-door cute blond girl that did guest spots on 7th Heaven to a punkish-looking, darker 'Anarchy is teh cool' girl. Even her sister Jessica from being basically an unknown in the Christian music arena to the dingy media darling we all love today.

Frankly, I think most of Ashlee's 'talent' comes from post-production, which can do some amazing stuff these days, including altering the pitch and quality of sound from a singer. I'm sure she's a nice person, and she's certainly making more money than anyone presently posting on GAF, but I can appreciate some of the criticism directed towards her.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother, and I wish the best for you and your family during these trying times.

Hey, mang, I'm an equal opportunity hater. I hate all manufactured music, and American Idol is the kind of tripe that pisses me off-- it's essentially a show to sell some records, it serves no other purpose.

I had an interesting conversation with my father one night a couple years back. I was going to a show at a local dive bar. He asked me why I would bother going to see a band "that could only get a show at that shithole." It's pretty funny that quality of music is equated with the exposure it receives. Ween has more talent when they take a dump than Ashlee Simpson, Lindsey Lohan, Hilary Duff, Kelly Clarkson, et al. have, will ever have, or have ever had. And I'm so tired of these dime-a-dozen no-talent AutoTuned cunts becoming famous... but in a society where quality doesn't need to exist, it just needs to be implied (look at our recent presidential election, or the top 10 movies this weekend), this shit won't stop.

these manufactured acts are produced to appeal to the widest possible audience. i don't see the problem in that really, as far as the audience is concerned. if it makes people happy to listen to britney ashlee or hilarious duff, whatever, more power to 'em. sure, there are social problems with the way young girls are portrayed when you have this manufacturing, but it has nothing to do with people not liking ween. it's a more pathological issue and it has to do with the following:

what i do have a problem with is the media majors freezing out musicians who aren't manufactured to maximize profits on the ones who are. when the industry is limiting information so that only their cultural vision is propagated, the public is unnecessarily manipulated. when you consider this, sure, the likes of ashlee simpson do everyone a disservice, but the axis of this is not ashlee simpson herself or the fact that people enjoy her music.

I don't see the difference...Ashlee is said to only be a star because she's Jessica's sis. Lindsay's only cutting tracks because she looks good enough to have a pictorial in Rolling Stone. Bottom line is that Lindsay is able to get a SNL performance with little paying of dues, instead of a legit artist that has the misfortune of not appearing in a half dozen Disney roles. With the insane amount of production nowadays the same is really true for Ashlee Simpson, if only Milli Vanilli had that kind of technology....
