"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Hey PC GAF, I have a French friend, Conceptor that needs a new graphics card, his old one froze to death living up in the cold parts of Canada, money is tight so the range is $90-150, so lets go for some thing that is bang for your buck but with the queens face on it. Here are some quotes I posted of his, bare with him his English is not so good.

"graphics card from $90-150"
"no preference between nvidia and ati"
"not want to deal with anything XFX"
"dead XFX 8600 GT OC"
"I've seen.. the 9800 GTX+ / GTX 250 seem to be nice (both under 150$)"
"concerns are that I've got a mid-sized tower with a single PCI-E 1.0 slot mobo and huge card won't exactly fit.
"Power no issue I got monster" "750W"
http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=13630BD6258&vpn=AX5770 512MD5-H&manufacture=POWERCOLOR

Edit: holy crap their name is PowerColor? I've been calling it PowerCooler for 7 months.
Edit2: $170 but more video RAM, slightly better brand, and he can pick it up himself instead of getting it shipped for $10

If Microcenter is selling an i7-920 for $230 (plus tax) is that a super great value to not pass?
Not unless you have an overwhelming need for a socket 1366 board, as opposed to a socket 1156 or AM3 board. It's the cheapest price you can get right now for a 1366-compatible CPU, but it's also $30 more than what Micro Center was charging last year.

I just my build up. How is Microsoft Security Essentials for AV? Is it reliable? Is it a resource hog?

Also, any safe processes I can kill from the start? 42 is quite high, but it is windows 7 so I don't know if that's the normal.

MSE is very nice and definitely not a resource hog.

Considering it's freeware, it's one of the most stable and better ones around. Easy non-cluttered interface as well.

Hello PC GAF! I plan on building my first PC but I don't know where to start. What will $1600 (not including monitor/mouse/keyboard) get me and is it enough to build a PC that'll play this and next year's biggest games? If anybody would be kind enough to build me something I can work with I'd really appreciate it.

Lately a fan in my PC will randomly rev up throughout the day. I'm not sure if it's the CPU or the video card, but lately it's been happening nearly everytime I watch a flash video in full screen.

Other times I'm just browsing through GAF and it will start sounding like an airplane taking off for less than a minute.

Anybody know what's going on? :P

well I tried throwing my XFX 5770 into my aged Athlon X2 setup (939 board with PCI-E 1.0). It didn't work (apparently it doesn't work with a number of boards from around that generation) so I updated my BIOS to see if that would fix it..... lo and behold my BIOS fried. I switched the jumpers to go back to the safe BIOS and apparently with awdflash using /wb instead of /pb kills the safe BIOS (which is what Foxconn fucking told me to do). long story short my motherboard will begin to POST but never finish and I can't get into setup or to a bootable point to redo the BIOS.

So I figured this was as good a time as any to throw together a few new parts... what I am looking at so far

Gigabyte P55 UD4P
Intel Core i5-750
Crucial DDR3-1333 RAM (2x2GB)
on top of my poor XFX 5770 that's just been sitting there waiting for something to do :P

Seems pretty solid without breaking the bank. Only thing left that I want to do is maybe run audio/video to the TV. I can get a 25' HDMI cable on monoprice just fine. My question is will I be able to carry sound over that also or will I need a separate optical cable. I know the 5000 series can do Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA over HDMI, but haven't found if they'll actually create the signal or just pass blu-ray audio. obviously I need a wireless mouse and keyboard to do that as well, so would appreciate any thoughts on those also.

Usually it is the fans auto mechanism going, oh its too hot, SWITCH TO AIRPLANE MODE! Usually happens if there is a lot of dust, helps if you vacuum your computer, or use a compressed air can. Although many people advise against vacuuming the inside of your computer, I just do it because it is faster. :lol

So, I decided to retire my 13inch macbook with intel GMA and a core duo 1.83GHz processor for something a little more modern.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220696&cm_re=core_i7-_-34-220-696-_-Product

It's in the process of being shipped now, did I do good? A core i7 with a gpu that has 400 shaders (though it looks like it could have a bit more memory bandwidth) sounds like it will boss around most if not all games on the machine's (rather depressing) 720p screen.

Seek out a 4770. Cheaper, cooler and smaller all without sacrificing any power.

Looks okay. Could've gotten one with a faster CPU though, 1.6GHZ is pretty slow, especially now that more games are using more cores at faster speeds.

Honestly he should really pool in at least another $30 and get the 5770. It will be better for him in the long run.

Yeah, it does turbo-boost to 2.8GHz though. I really can't imagine it being a substantial bottleneck.

.

That's just about the fastest mobile CPU you can buy these days.

A question regarding the 5770. My PC has a 350w PSU, would that be sufficient enough to power the card? I currently have a 9800GT and was looking to upgrade and the 5770 sounds good. I want to see if I can get away with upgrading the GPU without having to buy a new power supply.

You could go overkill on most of the components and still have money left over. Hell, you could Crossfire 5850's at that price.

Just wanted to say thanks for the help. I helped my friend put together his computer yesterday. I have one more thing I wanted to ask. I want to go with a dual monitor set up. I currently have an Acer 22 inch wide screen monitor. My budget for the monitor is $250. All I am looking for is suggestions for a monitor.

That's almost what I had when I initially spec'ed a 920 system (ended up going 860). The only thing I'm not sure about is the OCZ ram. It got pretty shitty reviews on newegg, but you know how internet complaints go...

I don't suppose anybody had picked up a Razer Imperator yet.... I can't find a local retailer that's carrying it and I'd be interested in hearing some opinions. I've used many gaming mice on my never-ending quest to find "the one", and I've always found Razer's to have the superior optics - I've just never found their mice very comfortable. The Imperator is said to be their most comfortable one yet.

Yeah I was actually considering going with Corsair dominator 6GB until a friend recommended the OCZ ones since it's practically the same performance for a much lower price.

$600 will cover that just fine. After $1000 you're hitting seriously diminishing returns.

The 5770 uses less power than a 9800GT, so if it powers that then, it'll be fine.

Got this to replace a failing 7800GTX.

Is it ordered yet? If not you could get a pretty major performance boost by stepping it up less than $20 to a 5770. You'll be stunned with the upgrade either way, but still, the point stands.

Curious, how are the Nvida 240 GT chips? I was thinking of getting an MSI one with 1gig of DDR3 memory because of the low power requirements. Would an Asus of the same series with 512 of DDR5 be better?

Shit. 5670s are the same price (more or less), come with DX11 and triple outputs and are noticeably faster. The DDR3 models in particular are pretty damn horrendous.

Even a cheapo 4670 would probably be a better option.

Yeah i got it over the weekend for $129, $15 off, I was originally gonna go with a 5670 since I am on a budget can't spend much, but when I saw this at $15 off I got it, and it was free shipping.

Reposting. Feel free to add other criteria.
I think we need a template added to the top of the OP.

Something like:

Budget/Location: ($500, $800, $1,200...)
PC Main Use(s): (Gaming (Light Gaming), Video editing, Web browsing...)
Monitor Resolution: (1280x1024, 1680x1050 ,1920x1080...)
Other Concerns: (Case size (ATX, mATX [Limited in part selection]), Low power [Limited again], Silent [Can get expensive, Limited]...)
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: (Starcraft II, Diablo III, Oblivion IV, Arma II, Crysis...)

If you need to add anything to that just do so. Every time someone asks for help they don't tell us everything and we waste posts.

WD hands down.

Why's that? Unless its a 500GB platter drive, it'll be noticably slower than the Samsung.

Edit: Yup, just checked and that's not a 500GB per platter model, so its slower, more expensive and (probably) noiser, can't see why you'd choose it given that.

Any specific retailers that are preferred (e.g. ncix for the assembly option) or must be avoided (say if Newegg is based in your home state) would be worth mentioning.

Either way, this really needs adding to the op.

I'm loving my new system, but damn somethings wrong with my network. I'm getting capped at 1.5 Mbs on Steam, and I'm getting high ping while I download it. I never had this problem on my old comp.

Are Samsung HDDs reliable though? I once had an HDD die on me (not Samsung mind you) and I can't say it was a rather pleasant experience.

Absolutely, they usually have 5 year warranties standard where WD and seagate have moved to mostly 3 year unless its a special line.

I actually own that exact samsung drive for about a year now, it's awesome. The hdd access noise is almost silent, makes my 750gb seagate drive sound like a semi downshifting. It's also very fast. I said the same thing before I bought one too, Samsung hdd wtf?? But I am very glad I bought a spinpoint F3.

Edit: Looks like I was wrong, it's a 3 year warranty. Oops. I would still recommend it, i've loved mine.

What do you mean "create the signal"?

It'll pass through whatever audio your system is outputting. Be that 5.1 LPCM, DD, DTS, stereo LPCM or indeed one of the new HD codecs. What are planning on sending the audio to, just your TV speakers?

No problems with the three Samsung F1s I've bought in the last couple of years. I don't think any brand is all that much more succeptible to a drive breaking down, HDDs inevitably fail due to their mechanical design. They've a 3 year warrranty as well which is pretty decent.

They've very quietly become a major player. Their F1 drives seemed to come from no where and were the fastest around when they launched a few years ago yet were priced very reasonably. They seem to have followed that tradition with the F3 range and have made the transition to 500GB platters faster than anyone. They're cheap, fast, spacious and quiet and come with a decent warranty, honestly unless you're going for an SSD I wouldn't consider anyone else.

IT WORKS ! IT WORKS! It WOOORKS! Ahahahhhahah! :D

So freaking excited that Monoprice sent me the right DVI cables this time(though they aren't very long and the others I saw were overkill...so it may take more doing than I thought to get the dual monitor thing going). Took a little over an hour and a half to install Win 7 Pro 64...no errors and no scary moments!

Many thanks to GAF for the gist of many things, even if my actual build went a bit different due to weird timings for things in stock. An especially savvy friend will make his way around here sometime soon I hope and from there we'll get an internet connection up on the thing, files copied over from my external HD, 2nd monitor working/workspace organizing, and everything tweaked and set up proper so I can finally, hopefully, retire my old PC here and enter into the modern computing and development age.

EXCITE!

Thanks brain_stew,

I know I have been out of the game for a while, but I was under the impression that most higher end video cards, even with just a single card, are better off with a 650W or so power supply. The 500W with the Sonata case is sufficient for a 5850? No major space issues with the Sonata case? That is the only piece on this list that I am a bit leary about.

A quality 500w PSU will power any single GPU rig just fine and yes, that case will fit a 5850, considering it fits a GTX 280 which is even longer.

By all means go with a more roubst PSU and case, but for the money that combo is a really good deal and is more than sufficient, hence why its chosen.

Edit: After being given the heads up on that awesome 600w modular PSU deal, the high end build now includes a 600w PSU and a larger case, so both of your potential fears are completely eradicated. :D

Right now there is a combo deal with the samsung hard drive and the ozc 600W one that is cheaper than buying the 500w and HD seperately.

but also, that HIS 5770 graphics card is the one with the worst newegg ratings, is it still good to get?

They all use the same design, and that cooler is better than the old model, so there shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the heads up on the combo. Both the budget and high end configs are now slightly different.
