"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

my system wouldn't post. I had a Broadway Com Corp PSU but I sent it back. I have a MSI 770-C45 MB. It was the PSU causing me trouble amirite?
Could be.. did you try a CMOS reset? I've had a couple boards come over the years that required that before the darn thing even got started.

did that but no change. fans and drives start up but no post. The PSU is the weakest link inmy system. Its supposed to be 600W for $20. Its probably more like a 300W at the most. Why I went so cheap. I dunno.

I plugged the power switch to my new case into my old pc and I could power it on and off but with the new psu I could only turn it on but I would have to manually turn off the psu to get the system to turn off

Then, could you recommend me something under $300? This isn't going to be a PC that crazy video games are played on, but more a PC to store music and movies, plus extremely casual video game playing. I guess the appropriate term would be HTPC?
I'll take a stab at it.

Case - $40 - Sturdy and simple looking case with good vents/cooling options.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...cm_re=coolermaster_330-_-11-119-115-_-Product

Power Supply - $40 - I don't like no name PSU's. Too much of a gamble for just a few dollars saved. Stick with Antec/Seasonic/Corsair or OCZ.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...023&cm_re=power_supply-_-17-371-023-_-Product

Motherboard - $80 - A little pricier, but a much better brand that includes onboard video with HDMI and DVI. Eliminates the need for a discrete GPU.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...e=gigabyte_motherboard-_-13-128-394-_-Product

CPU - $57 - Low power drain and should offer more than enough performance for light games and HD video.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103688

Memory - $45 - A much more reputable brand, and even has a heatsink for $5 more.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&cm_re=ddr2_memory_2gb-_-20-231-121-_-Product

Hard Drive - $55 - $15 more than the one you chose, but 340 more gigs. You'll want more space if you're going to store lots of music/movies/media.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073&cm_re=wd_blue-_-22-136-073-_-Product

Toss in an optional dvd burner and/or CPU cooler if you want to overclock and you are done.

Total is around $320. A little over budget, but for $20, they are much better quality parts. Then again, it wouldn't take much to make this into something that could play more than casual games.

I'm building my friends dad a computer, he is an old fella and doesnt really need much more than a general internet surfing machine.

I have picked this gear out; I'm 99% sure its compatible and will work, just want to get it double checked before I go ahead and order parts with someone elses money.

Mobo + Integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=12126

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 240
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=12140

HDD: WD Caviar Black 500GB
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=11863

Case + 450W PSU. Yeh its a no name brand, but he wont be gaming on it so im not fussed.
http://www.principalcomputers.com.au/index.php?q=item&id=6389

Ram: 2gb DDR2 667MHz
http://www.principalcomputers.com.au/index.php?q=item&id=3608

I have a OS and DVD Rom drive +Monitor etc, is there anything else you can think of?

Ok so Im about to order this list. My only realy query is, I wont need a GPU at all will I as the mobo has integrated graphics correct?

That's right. Should serve the casual pc goer just fine, with options for all types of display connections.(HDMI, VGA, DVI)

You may want to look at my post above for a similar build. Some of the picks you had are sort of generic parts. the RAM and PSU+case don't sit too well with me personally. I'm not too familiar with prices down under though.

Yeh if I was building with a gaming mind I would be worried about the generic crap aswell, but as its for an old codger that pretty much uses the internet for porn, I am not too fussed! Anyway thanks for clarifying, he gave me $450 to spend so I spent like $400 and kept the rest haha.

Check your RAM, especially if you have two sticks of it. I had a dud stick and the exact same thing happened to me. I don't know why, but it stops it from POSTing properly.

Not unless you have an overwhelming need for a socket 1366 board, as opposed to a socket 1156 or AM3 board. It's the cheapest price you can get right now for a 1366-compatible CPU, but it's also $30 more than what Micro Center was charging last year.

well now the i7-920 is 200 dollars again. Is it now a better value than a $140 x4 925? Just wondering if I should take advantage of living close to a micro center. Is there something wrong with the 1366 sockets?

think I found the problem. ram need to be 1.5, mine is 1.7-1.9V

wish that was specified on newegg

*sigh*

did you get any beeps when that dud ram was in your system? I wasn't getting any beeps even when the ram slots were empty

Can you elaborate on this?

After reading up on the Juniper XT name on the XFX card, I found out that all 5770 are actually Juniper cards. So, no need to worry. That tag just threw me off. Go with Brain_stew's choice. It has the better cooler.

getting my new machine in about a week or so. is there any reason to get 32bit win 7 or should i just get 64bit and not worry about it?

Definitely Win7 64bit, I recently built an i7 920 rig and I'm running 64bit for the first time, So far it's been very solid and runs everything fine that ive tried.

Besides 32bit windows wont recognize any higher than 4GB system ram and even then it doesnt detect the full 4GB (If you plan on running higher that is)

For example im currently dual booting WinXP 32bit & Win 7 64bit and when I boot into XP it only detects 3.4GB total ram and I have 6gb installed.

can someone recommend a gaming laptop. i'm looking at the soon to be released alienware m11x, anything out now with similar specs? mid-range gpu 1gig ram, 4+ gigs system mem, i5 or something close, the smaller the form factor the better?

Hi guys, a lot of stuff has been put on sale at newegg today.

That ripjaw 4GB DDR3 RAM is now $84.99 instead of $93.99

HIS 5770 is $152.99 from 162.99 with a promo code they give you on the page for it. ( but you can't use promo codes with combo deals like gpu + cpu )

The AMD Phenom X4 3.2GHz cpu is 165.99 but also comes with a $10 gift card now.

And this ASUS motherboard is on sale for 84.99 from 99.99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131398 Is this motherboard good?

just a heads- up!

Quick question: is there a difference in all the Radeon 5850 brands? (Diamond, Saaphire, etc)

if you cant find any difference in clock speeds and looks , the only thing that differs between the brands are the stickers on the cooler and the bundles.

if they do look different from each other , well then you got it right there.

but in general when it comes to graphics cards , if we are only talking standard editions. the only thing that differs are the sticker on the cooler and the bundles

Generally, no.

If anything, it's usually modest overclocks.

Thanks.

Which 5770 has better cooling? The HIS 5770 or the Vapor-X Sapphire?
pretty sure all the 5770's either come with the phoenix cooler or the egg cooler... I think it was anandtech that showed the egg cooler actually provided lower temperatures across the board on the 5770s. I have an XFX board with the egg cooler (XFX 577x) and so far temperatures (and noise) have been fine on mine.

HarryDemeanor said:
The 5770 with the Juniper XT uses the new architecture for those cards. That is the one to get.
this is incorrect. all 5770s are Juniper XT. The difference between the two cards is right in the pictures. The A version (577a Juniper XT) uses the phoenix shroud for cooling. The X version (577x) uses the egg cooler (non-shroud). They perform exactly the same, just the different coolers. The X version is the newer one and as I just mentioned, was shown by Anandtech to run very slightly cooler.

To be honest, I wouldn't know. I don't get any beeps ever because I never did the front panel wiring!

This problem is annoying as it's never mentioned anywhere. Dud RAM, and in your case wrong timings, can make your system fail to POST. It's so overlooked it's unbelievable.

On an unrelated note, I got my new aftermarket heatsink today. It's called the Scythe Shuriken Rev. B, and it's awesome. I was intent on buying it because the loud noise my PC makes is extremely annoying. This baby is one of the quietest sinks around, dropping the noise down to a mere 31dB on idle and 38dB on max load. It's nearly whisper quiet, perfect for enjoying Mass Effect 2.

Another reason why I bought it was it's size - the fan is a large one, about 11cm squared, but the height is a miniscule 6.5cm. Not much taller than a typical bundled heatsink, it's ideal for baby mATX cases like mine. I should also mention how easy it was to set up the AM2+/AM3 bezel clips, literally snap on simplicity.

Scythe%20Shuriken.jpg

As for temps, as has been reported this will actually raise them by a few degrees. Before, I idled at 33C and hit 49.5C under an hour of max load. Now, it goes as low as 28.5C on idle, but hits a new record high of 52C after an hour maxed. The increase is slow and very gradual, but it seems to stick to the 52C and never goes past that. Arctic Silver 5 probably helps with that. I'm fine with it to be perfectly honest, as long as it's quiet, and this was also a dual core running at 100% continuously. So that's my mini-review - 8/10 overall.

So I was just building my first pc, and there was aluminum foam on the i/o shield(asus q-shield). I tried and install the motherboard onto the standoffs but it didn't fit. I removed the foam and now it fits, but did I make any mistake by removing the foam? I presume the q-shield is just an extra precaution and is not needed?

Can anyone reccomend a good 20"+ TV that is also a good monitor? I want my new PC in the guest room and might as well have the screen do both tasks.

You can check the link I posted earlier on this page and see if that works for you. I was hoping some folks had some opinions on it, but it kinda got looked past :P. I'm only using it as a monitor, but it can be used as a TV as well.

Yeah I read about it after I made that post and realized I made a mistake. Thanks for the information though.

Tomshardware just posted an article on some of the crashes ATI card owners have been having:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ATI-Radeon-Grey-Screen-Crash,9529.html#t108128
They talk as though it only affects 5xxx series cards but the problem seems to exist on some 4xxx cards as well...though it is more common on 5xxx so far.

Im one of the unlucky ones. It rarely happens to me but its just frustrating enough to piss me off and ATI has been pretty vague about it. Its finally listed as a known issue with yesterdays 10.1 drivers. It only took them 2 months to acknowledge it.

Sapphire support has been lame for me too. I know others with the same card as me who were told to update their VBIOS and were provided with the downloads and programs to do so yet they tell me no such thing exists. They suggested I wait it out.

I hope its sorted out soon as I really dont want to RMA and be left without a PC for a few weeks.

Okay so I'm feeling really dumb here.

1) My case came with what appears to be a rack for the hard drive and a slim 3-speed fan (which is closed on the other side of it) for who knows what. Anyone know what is up with this?

2) My custom CPU cooler is a bit tricky. It seems like I am to use these braces, but they don't clip on or anything, it seems like everything is loose until you screw it on. Am I to just set the cooler on the CPU and let it be loose as it will be as I get those braces set? I'm afraid of air getting in under the thermal grease.

3) Am I supposed to put the memory in the blue slots closer to the CPU, or the white slots further from it?

My more technical brother will come by later to help me with plugging in all the right cables in the right places and whatnot but I figure I can at least get everything in place first.

1. If you're just talking about the empty fan bracket, remove it if you didn't buy an additional interior fan.

2. Read the instruction manual.

3. Read the motherboard instruction manual. It's different depending on the brand/model. For example, mine went in the blue slots which were furthest from the cpu.

:lol :lol :lol I'm kicking myself here. The rack is not for a hard drive, I just forgot that floppy drives are the same size... and also that they even exist.

Also, I figured out where the other fan goes. It's supposed to rest against the wall of the case toward the bottom and suck in air from the back and blow it on the MB.

2. Read the instruction manual.
There is none, just a sheet with some illustrations.

Yeah I found out the blue ones are 1 and 2 so those go first.

Also new issue

4) I'm not quite sure what to do with the power to my 5850. From the PSU there is a cord that has a 6+2pin PCI-E power connector which seems to relay into a 6-pin at the end. Could I just plug these into the power slots for the video card (ignoring the +2) or does that relay serve some other specific purpose so I should run two completely separate power cables to the card?

Does anyone know of any Amerifriend programs that will forward computer parts to Canada for a small fee?

I know there's something similar in place for games, but I've never heard of anything in place for parts or anything bigger...

Pulled trigger on wife's Valentine present:

Sapphire 5850
I5-750
4GB Gskill ram from list
Awesome Samsung HDD from list
Gigabyte mobo from list

Have the rest of the stuff already, + SSD. It should scream at 1680x1050, she'll be happy :)

This thread has been awesomely helpful with the details, big thanks to those who keep it going.

Hey Gaf I'm looking to get a 3d monitor.

Should I get the Samsung 22 inch? OR should I get the viewsonic 22 inch?

The viewsonic is a lot cheaper and I've only got like 260 set aside right now for the monitor but I can always just take some more out of my account so it's not that big of a deal.

But are there any monitors soon on their way that are supposed to be better/cheaper?

bump :)

Can I get a decent gaming notebook for $800? If you know any good deal, please post here. I have to buy one this week.

If you dont mind refurb, get this.
Itll run anything you want at high/max. I own it and its awesome. It does get pretty hot (90C for the GPU) but its made to be that way.

If you want new, get the newer version of the same laptop from Best Buy, but its $900.
Its got a little faster processor too. You can also OC the proc and GPU on both to make it even better :D
Its a great bang for the buck.

Okay, posting from my new PC. Trying to figure out how to get my LG W2353V-PF monitor to work right with Win7 64bit...

...aaaand it looks like the new Catalyst drivers took care of that.

Lol. I asked almost that same question last week when I built my rig and no one answered. I plugged both cables in (mine were separate 4 pins labeled for PCI-E). It works like a charm so I'm assuming that's the way to go.

I don't know if I'd recommend them after my last laptop, but if you're a student you can get a pretty good discount at dell. The m1530 was pretty sweet in the beginning, I just happened to buy one when they had those bunked nvidia cards.

So the website for AMD Overdrive is not working. Anyone know where else to get the latest version?

Not sure if anyone here would know this yet, but will the rumored AMD Phenom X6 chips run on the AM3 socket? Would be sweet to pick up a cheap triple core now and still have room to upgrade later on.

How do you guys feel about some fo these New Egg combo deals?

I was thinking about building a desktop with an i5 processor and a radeon 5850..
