"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

On in every case. Both in-game and forced via D3DO. Should I turn off the in-game setting?

Well, yeah, only force it in one place, so swith it off ingame.

Regardless, its supposed to be locked at 60fps, your monitor can't display anything more than that, and anything above 60fps would just result in unsightly tearing.

First time building a PC, all I have to say so far getting everything in a P183 case in a pain in the ass.

How so? Considering that's the case I'm looking at, it would be interesting to know what problems you're having. I know the hinges are meant to be a little weak, but the layout and space inside looked pretty good and easily manageable.

It may look manageable, but most mid size cases are a bitch to work in simply because there isn't much room to move your arms. That's why I suggested that Lian Li case simply because it has a removable motherboard tray.

Has anyone ever had UPS ground not update their tracking information until the day the shipment arrives? I ordered a new PC from CyberPowerPC.com. They say it shipped on Monday and issued me a tracking number but for the past 4 days UPS still says "Billing Information Received." If I don't get it by Friday I'll be really worried that I'll never see that PC.

This is what I ordered BTW:

INTEL i7-920 2.66GHZ 8M
ATI HD 5870 PCI-E 16X 1 GB DDR5
GIGABYTE X58A-UD3R
80GB Intel X25-M 2.5 inch SATA SSD
1.5TB SATA-II 3.0GB/S 32MB CACHE 7200 RPM HDD
SIGMA SHARK 635WATT POWER SUPPLY
2GB DDR3 / 1600 MHZ MEMORY (x3)
LITEON IHOS 104 4X BLU-RAY PLAYER
BLACK LG 22X DVDRW
WINDOWS 7 64BIT HOME PREMIUM

Tracking isn't that reliable. It never updates, doesn't work, or updates way after it's delivered to your door. Just look at the expected delivery date (if you have one), and expect it on that day or the day after.

And so it is. I built about ~30 systems with the P182/3 series by Antec - no problems.
Perfect management for the cables behind the motherboard-tray and plenty of room for the drives.
The P183 also improved the space for the power supply and the lower harddisk-cage.

Best case for its money unless you don't want to add a few hundred bucks for an TJ07 etc. ;)

I've been looking at LGA1156 boards, but I'm not quite sure which one to go for. I don't really have very many requirements, just so long as it's a solid board. I wouldn't mind it having decent overclocking options though. I probably won't be doing SLI or anything like that. I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience/suggestions. I would like the price to be as low as possible, but I'm still willing to spend around $200 if that's what people suggest.

I am pretty sure most of my frustrations is attributed to my lack of experience.
But inside the gets gets crowded real quick.
There are some connectors I wish I had put on the motherboard before I installed into the case, the cpu fans for sure.

This is what I ultimately would like my setup to look like.

Getting all the wires buttoned away is going to be a task.

Overall I wish I could have got a full tower that looks just as clean.

BIOS itself doesn't say, just AUTO. According to CPU-Z, 1.264-ish. :lol

Correction: VID is 1.325. Had to use CoreTemp to figure it out.
Update: I've managed to boot into Windows with up to 2.65-ishGHZ. I seem to have hit a wall, as everything past it will either restart after post or hang at the Windows logo.
Update 2: I've managed to boot in with 2.7ghz. Semi-happy with this, so far. But, I'd really like to hit 3ghz. Is there any particular reason that you and Exodus insist on not replacing my board?
I've managed to hit 2.67ghz at stock voltage pretty effortlessly. (Image below is clickable)

Not a great overclock, but I'm positive that it's capable of more. But I've just decided that I'll not fuss with it until it becomes a limiting factor. Thankfully, it's running super cool, thanks to my new CM 690 II Advanced. Amazing airflow. Q6600 B3 idles at 40C and the hottest I've seen is 52C.

My next two priorities are RAM and a video card. I still have an 2GB and 8800GTS 320MB. I don't have a set budget, but I also don't have a ton of money to toss around.

I need recommendations, GAF.

1. remove side-panels and both hd-cages
2. install power supply and manage all the cables to the right spots (take a look on the layout of your motherboard)
3. install the motherboard and plug the cables in
4. install the drives and connect their cables
5. install the rest (cpu + cooler, gpu, ram, additional cards)
6. play mass effect 2

btw:
Coolers which are supposed to be holded by a backplane on the backside of your motherboard, can only be installed inside the case if you got the new revision of the P183.
There is a hole in the tray, so you can install those later.

This is where I went wrong and did this first, then installed it into the case.
Should I just take it off and run the wires?

Totally, if you want to clean up your wiring without getting several cuts by the cpu-cooler ;)
Especially when you got something big like Noctua etc.

Lol, man was hoping you wouldn't say that, the Noctua was a pain to setup.
Especially the wires for the fans.

EDIT: the holidays are probably screwing up your order. Give UPS a call and ask for a update on status.

anyone got a aftermarket cpu cooler AM2+ that is quiet? I can't stand hardware sound, hell I silenced my 8800GT with a Accelero S1 Rev 2.

I can go either way with the CPUs

is it worth the extra 60 bucks to go phenom II ?

I game @ 1600x900 and encode some videos from time to time.

Bumping in hopes of getting an answer.

Does L3 cache makes a difference? I've notice the 630 doesn't have one?

Just bought this.

It's the first time assembling a pc and I'm looking forward to it. I'm planning on modding it a bit to make it a silent pc.

Any tips for assembly would be welcome. What is the preferred method/hardware to make this specific GPU silent?

Not really. Even at $30 difference with the x3's you aren't seeing that much of a performance benefit. Plus, at $160 you're edging into i5 territory which would be a much better upgrade.

Thanks for the reply about the PSU. I agree, I don't want to skimp on the PSU as I can imagine that it is a very important part of a quality build. I'll look into that case, it seems to have some decent ratings on Newegg. Unfortunately by the time I checked the other combo deal you posted it was unavailable. Hopefully by the time I begin ordering there will be some new deals to take advantage of. I just managed to get Windows 7 (really needed a copy) Professional through that Student program. I ended up paying about $85 which I thought was a good deal; would have paid less if I realized I could both download an ISO file / burn it to a DVD and it would still work. Oh well, better than paying full retail for Windows 7.

I'm just waiting now to make my move. Still keeping an eye on the stock of items, and pretty much sold on the main component parts. Still debating over the PSU/case ordeal, as well as finding a cost-effective means of cooling so I can try some overclocking. Anyone have any recommendations on cases and PSU's that are reasonably priced but good quality? Thanks again!

Yeah it won't be that clean trust me. I have the case and it was a cable management nightmare. I also took out the middle HD drive cage for better air flow. There is no where you can high the big cables that come out of your PSU. Also, getting the main 24 pin connector behind is almost impossible as it won't close properly from it being too thick. You will never get what that picture shows. I had to put the front panel wires behind the case and as it takes space in that indent, putting any big cables there is almost impossible.

Also what you don't notice is the back panel is not actually on, giving it room to stick all the unwanted cables behind.

I will probably have to revisit my cable management, and see if I can move some things around. Also the hinges are really weak, I broke one trying to put the back panel on, guess it was out of my frustration. *shrugs*

Hate to break it to ya, but you'll never make high-end GPUs silent without 3rd party cooling.

NVidia and ATi seem to make it a point to stick them with the shittiest coolers and smallest fans you can get.

Oh, I know.;)

I've seen some nice 3rd party coolers, mainly on silentpcreview, but I'm trying to broaden the search by asking here.

I just hope everything works.
Like I said for the most part I have no idea what I'm doing.

Hey guys, I'll take some pictures tomorrow of the rigs I'm building for our customers. You'll see that the cable management from the picture is far from perfect.
I'll also post some shots of the tray backside so you may get some inspiration :)

Okay guys, it's time to upgrade from WinXP to Win7. What I want to do is hopefully just upgrade my processor to a quad core and my ram to at least 4GB, keep my motherboard if possible, and wait to upgrade my video card until this fall.

Here's my current rig:

Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz (OC to 3.0Ghz)
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX
Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
MSI NX8800GT 512M OC GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
Antec earthwatts EA500 500W Continuous Power ATX12V
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s

So what would you recommend in a Quad core that would work in my motherboard? Do I need all new ram?

Cool, I appreciate it.
I will see how much I get done tonight.
I also don't think i put the thermal grease on right:lol
I put a tiny dot in the middle then clamped the Noctua down per the instructions that came with the cooler.

Edit: Most *new* listings for the Q9550 on ebay start at $239. You sure yours is new?

Hey all, I've been lurking in the PC build threads from time-to-time, and now it's my turn to jump in. Currently I work and game on my Macbook Pro via Bootcamp, which has worked well for the last 3~ years. But now I'm at the point where I feel a dedicated gaming rig will do me some good, and I can dedicate the Mac to workstation tasks. I've been out of the PC building world for some time now, as evident by the obscene amount of head spinning when I tried spec something together. Normally I would prefer to look these things up myself, but I'm so far behind that you guys might be able to help.

So here's the breakdown,

Budget: $500 - $600, but would prefer cheaper to more expensive
Main Use: Gaming, and that's it.
Monitor: 1920 x 1200
Games: TF2, L4D2, CODMW2, FarCry2, Mirror's Edge - I'm not looking to max Crysis, but games of this level at max settings and ~60fps would be a huge step up from Med. settings at 1280 x 800 with ~30 fps.

I'm thinking that something like a Radeon 5XXX series, Intel i3/5, and 4Gb of ram would be more than sufficient, but I'm a little lost on "what works with what", and I'd hate to have some unforeseen compatibility issues. I've never used ATI cards, but I heard the current 5XXX gen is pretty dang good. Although some people have mentioned problems with anti-aliasing? Any help would be appreciated.

ASUS P7P55D-PRO or EVo. i have a PRO and it's great for overclocking and has lots of features.

Final thing that occurred to me - what's the out-of-the-box cooling on the i7-860 like? Should I invest in some extra myself, or - as I won't be doing any OCing - can I get by without?

But I was just wondering, I want my new pc done on may 1st.
On the info you all have about the new Nvidea chip set/GPU do you think I'll be able to make a new intel/Nvidea system before then or does it look like it the first DX11 cards from them are hitting later?

Thanks for the info.

Sorry for quoting my own question I just thought more people would know the answer to this.
Thanks in advance

I don't know, my 5870 is completely silent, along with the rest of my PC, no custom cooling for the GPU.

The fan only runs at around 20% and the card sits at 31C which is nice, I could probably disable the fan and it'd be fine :lol

The graph speaks for itself. From an HD5870 review at Guru3D. 2200RPM and it wasn't done climbing. Not very silent at all. I should say it definitely depends on the ambient sound of your PC though. I don't have a 120mm fan spinning any faster than 800RPM in my case at any point, so even with a better than stock cooler (MSI Twin Frozer GTX 275), my video card is the loudest component in my case.

It's common sense. The card produces nearly 190 watts of heat. That takes some cooling.

He was probably talking about idle. I know I care much less about fan noise during games than if I'm just playing some music or leaving the box on overnight.

Idle is hardly anything to talk about though. Any video card could have its fan off at idle if the case had good airflow. They take like 1/4 of the power at idle.

The seller had them as buy it now for $175 with shipping it was $180. He was selling 3 and had 4 positive feedbacks from selling others at the same price since the beginning of January. Maybe he stole a case of them? I don't know. I'll find out when I get it.

Stew or Exodu5, why were you guys insisting that I not replace my motherboard? On top of being a bust with quadcores it's apparently flat-out incompatible with ATI's 5850/5870 series.

USB 3.0 has been around for quite a little bit but hasn't really become the standard and as far as True SATA goes, I really don't know how that will affect me (or this build).

I just ran the Dawn of War II performance test at maximum settings, with my speakers off, and I can not discern any increase in volume of the fans from my PC (located right under the desk, slightly raised off the ground), which makes about as much noise as the slight buzzing from the incadescant light bulb in the room. It is far, far less audible than the clicking of the HDD loading the level, and unnoticeable unless you listen for it very hard (completely silent was a little bit exaggerated).

That is with the sound off, if there is any kind of ambient noise (fridge fan running, music, TV, etc) you absolutely cannot hear it.
