What kind of power supply? Also, make your 3d settings are on default, because some of mine got changed and dropped my performance a bunch in some games.

That's not stable then.

550w, requires 500w but i guess it is a bit close

when you get back into windows run a chkdsk on the drive. If it has a bunch of bad sectors or anything really I would think about returning it. What is the brand/type?

Sounds like the drive. If you manage to boot back into Windows, download Speedfan and click on the SMART tab, then the Perform In-Depth Analysis. May provide some insight. Good luck.

So I'm looking to get a graphics card for the first time and I don't know shit. I built my own PC back in the day and things have changed so much I don't even know what's what. That and my Xbox360 is in for repairs so I'm finally bothered to upgrade my PC.

Basically I want to be able to run TF2 and some other older games at decent levels (particularly Rome:TW and MTW:2).

These are my specs currently (and obviously the biggest weakness is the video card)
hrixcp.jpg

The graphics are onboard by the way on a factory made HP I bought a couple years back.

So computing GAF:
  • What is the best graphics card I can get off of newegg for between 100 and 130 dollars?
  • I know that my PCIE slot is a 16x but how do you figure out if it is 2.0 or whatever?
  • Are these things easy to install?

Any help, recommendations, or links to good cards would be awesome.

uh, this intel stock cpu cooler is kinda shit. between not fully understanding overclocking and the worry it might get too hot, I'm gonna just gonna hold off it until I get a better one.

Did the chkdsk get any errors? Sounds like it's defective though. Probably should start the RMA as soon as possible.
Scanning for bad sectors now.
Says it found errors that could only be repaired at startup.
When i run checkdisk again it says no errors found in the filesystem :/

my friend want a new pc ( budget ~1000 $ )

i thought about i5 750 + asus or evga mobo + ati 5850 + corsair dominator 2x2

is 500w enough for 5850 ?!

thanks

what is the model of your desktop? 2.0 vs 1.0 doesn't matter, odds are you have 1.0. get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127478
use coupon code vga21815 to get 25 bucks off, plus you have the rebate and a free game included

depends on what the psu is. the listed wattage isn't everything

It looks like a good card but I'm not entirely sure how to disable and uninstall the drivers for the onboard graphics since its NVIDIA.
just go to control panel and remove the nvidia drivers. then boot into system bios, which is probably delete since you have a hp computer. disable the onboard graphics in there. look at the card i posted, it might have better value for you. im really happy with my gts 250, especially with the overclocking i was able to do.

edit: the 4850 is more expensive than the gts 250. definitely get the gts 250

I don't know what kind of wattage anything draws really so take this with a grain of salt but my gut feeling is I would go for something in the 600-700 watt range.

This also looks good. The model on my desktop is HP Pavilion a6230n.
hmm I'm not sure if you'll need a new power supply or not. would you be able to open up the computer, and take a picture of the sticker on the power supply, particularly of where it says 12V?

Alrighty here we go folks:

Budget: $2,000
Main Use(s): Gaming and Web Browsing
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: FFXIV, Solitaire....<___<, Battlefield 3, Crysis, 2033

Hope that helps?

Mmm, not too sure. Maybe someone more experienced could answer you. Btw, what are the requirements for FFXIV?

hmm, so if my core temps and my cpu temps are about 6-8 degrees off, then I guess my cores are idling at 38-40, and 52-54 under load. is this bad for an unlocked 4th core and no OC? I was able to keep the vcore at 1.275

Ok which hard drive should I replace this POS with?

I would recommend the Samsung spinpoint F3. Looks like it's out of stock at the moment, but i've been using one for over a year and it's been rock solid and very quiet.

Or this, the chances of getting 2 lemons is pretty rare. Western Digital is usually pretty reliable.

I'm pissed right now prob not the best time to make decisions
RMA turnaround time is going to make it even worst
trying to reinstall windows to see if that helps, I have already acquired a RMA number from newegg..

I have the same exact drive you do, it's done absolute wonders for my computing experience. Western Digital is usually quality stuff. I'd say just get another one of the same.

Also, you could go to Best Buy and have them price match it to bestbuy.com for $99+tax.

Thinking about doing just this, would only loose on the restocking and shipping fees from newegg.

I have reinstalled windows but there is def something wrong with the drive.
Going on the road now, might just swing by bestbuy or see what happens with it tonight.
Totally left field question, could the ATI drivers cause any issues that look similar?

Good luck. I'd hate to see such a great rig brought down by an HDD. :lol

Doubtful about the ATI drivers, but I wouldn't count it out. Try rolling back and see what happens.

Okay folks, I just built a new rig and I'm about to tear my hair out over it. First off here are the specs:

Antec Mini P180
EVGA ATX 550 Watt PSU
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
Intel i7 860 LGA 1156
G.Skill DDR3-1600 4x2gb
Sapphire HD 5850 1GB GDDR5
Seagate 250GB for OS
Hitachi Deskstar 1TB for storage
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Okay so to begin with, everything installed perfect and booted up just fine with no issues. Unitl, I get to the ATI drivers. As soon as I get them installed I start getting lockups and BSOD's pointing to "atikmpag.sys" After scouring the net over and over again, I've found tons of similar problems not only with the ATI 5850's but with ATI's drivers in general.

Not to be deterred, I tried the oem drivers, drivers from sapphire (including a hotfix), drivers from ATI (both old and new) and I even looked at Omega drivers, but they didn't have any for Windows 7 64bit. On a side note, the first time I updated the bios the pc worked great for a few hours and I even played some games like Dirt2. However, the issues resurfaced sometime later. I went into the bios and set the DRam speed up to 1600 which is what the ram is and it worked for an entire evening.

Well this morning the system wouldn't boot until I re-inserted a usb thumb drive into my usb hub built into my monitor. After that it was the same old story of the graphics driver locking up and trying to reset itself. It eventually ended up corrupting my Windows 7 install and so now I'm here typing on a fresh install with no graphics driver installed. Funny thing is, I unplugged my usb hub this time around to make sure there were no usb hi-jinks and low and behold it does boot without the thumb drive, but now if I plug my hub in, it will not boot. I'm at a loss.

I don't have any test parts to really see what is or isn't working in the hardware department as my old pc is P4 with AGP. Deep down I feel it's a software issue, but either way I feel like I should RMA the 5850.

Sorry for the wall of text/rant, but any help would be awesome! Thanks!

Default your bios completely, don't even touch the ram settings. The reason you didn't boot is because because you did something in the bios that prevented it from booting. For example, XMP without any additional changes doesn't even start for me. Clear the cmos, and you should be good to go.

Anyway, Reformat Win7, get your chipset, network, and sound drivers. Full windows update that shit. Install only 10.2 CCC. Let me know how it works.

USB issues could be a bios setting or the hardware, I had a dlink usb hub that was acting funny, detection issues in win7. I replaced it with a belkin and the problems went away. As for the video card, do you ever see graphical corruptions, or other display weirdness when posting, or during boot up? Or only in windows?

I did clear the cmos, which helped with some things, but it still wouldn't boot without the thumb drive. And now it's not booting with my usb hub plugged in. It almost seems that whatever was connected when windows was installed is exactly what needs to be connected for it to boot. Very strange. I've got a new install, updating windows now. I'll grab 10.2 in a bit and update ya. Thanks for your help. :D

When the lock ups occur there is often a split second where the graphics look scrambled. Then it BSOD's. Never see any display issues on boot up or during posting.

Hopefully that means it's just a driver/windows issue as long as you're not seeing anything in the bios/post screens and the card itself is ok.

Before I place my order i just want to confirm that:

a) PCI-e 2.0 Graphics card is backwards compatible with a PCI-e 1.0 mobo?

b) Will the 5770, suggested 450watts, operate on a 430 watt psu?

Okay I've got 10.2 loaded and the driver has already restarted it self once since windows booted. I guess I should have been clearer on the lockups. They generally occur during the windows bootup screen where it says welcome and the loading icon appears. If the icon stops spinning it's locking up to the BSOD that points to atikmpag.sys So I guess the answer is yes I'm having issues during bootup, but there isn't any major display corruption, just a split second before the BSOD.

So Windows 7. chipset, sound, Ethernet >Windows update > ATI CCC 10.2 has led me to the same issue.

Yes.
Uhh. I highly doubt it will run during load. Get a new power supply.

don't know if this will help you: from

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5770-review-test/11

Single GPU 5770

System in IDLE = 228 Watts
System with GPU in FULL Stress = 321 Watts
Difference (GPU load) = 93 Watt

Dual GPU 5770

System in IDLE = 249 Watts (= 21W added over single GPU)
System with GPU in FULL Stress = 423Watts
Difference (GPU load) = 174 Watt
The monitoring device is reporting a maximum system wattage peak at roughly 425 Watts in CrossfireX (2-way), and for a PC with this setup, this is simply low and certainly remains within acceptable levels.

The IDLE wattage is very okay, the card is clocking down massively, resulting in an all time low power consumption (for our test PC). We'll show you that in a graph in a minute.

Recommended Power Supply

So here's my power supply recommendation:

Radeon HD 5770 (single GPU)

The card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 40 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.
Radeon HD 5770 CrossfireX (dual GPUs)

A second card requires you to add another 108 Watts. You need a 600+ Watt power supply unit if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 55 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.
For each card that you add, add another 108 Watts as a safety margin.

Hmm in that same thought of power being lacking, I wonder if my 550 watt psu could be causing the graphics card to foul up.

Next step: and I really appreciate all the help so far...

If I want to get this card GTS 250 from newegg as suggested by LKR...

What would people suggest in the way of a new PSU. I really want to go cheap...and I'm not trying to do anything crazy like crossfire or SLI or whatever they are calling it.

Well after trying again to get this thing stable with the driver, the only thing that works so far is turning the RAM up to 1600 from 1333 in the bios. That is what worked last night. I've also used ATI overdrive to bring down the clock speed of the card to 700 from 725 after reading a few threads out there. I'll give this a go and see what happens.

Save yourself the 45$. (70$ if the rebate doesn't come back)
