I hear you, the only real issues are the GTX 460 seems to be very rare, as some stores are starting to price hike them, and I don't have a decent GPU in my system. All I really need is something to pass me by for 18 months, i'd be happy with a hard as powerful as my 8800 tbh, though its ridiculous to go out and buy one again.

That 250GTS sounds good considering the pricing where you are. The 460 will last you a lot longer in the long run and both have similar value per $ (if you turn up settings).

I will post again when I am off work with official specs, but as I cannot afford a new PC right now I have an older Dell desktop I am trying to fix up a bit to play some games (WoW, TF2). Right now it runs WoW at about 20FPS, but it only has 1GB of RAM.

I need to find a bit more DDR PC3200 RAM, anyone have any they aren't using or know where it is cheap? May just get 2 more 512 sticks off NewEgg.

I am not really good with computer hardware so I am trying to figure out everything I need to at least make this machine a little better for the time being, I believe I need a 100mm fan too.

Don't toss in any more money into that computer. Time to save!

Okay, I definitely need a new PSU, my PC doesn't POST all the time when I turn it on since I got the GeForce 470 card (10% of the time it doesn't turn on or gets stuck at the mobo splash screen). I think I have an OCZ thats 650 or 750, I'm not entirely sure.

I'm thinking about getting the Corsair 850TX. Any recommendations? Whether I need more or less or if theres a cheaper option.

Also, should all these power supplies fit in a standard case? some of the PSUs look like they are different sizes but could just be the angle of the pictures.

A solid 550w would be fine. The Corsair 650W is a nice choice, 750W if you plan on tossing another card later.

Any performance charts for the i5-760 vs the i5-750, the x4 965 and the two x6's?

760 is just the 750 with a x21 instead of x20 multi. No point in getting it. Save $10 or so.

Way overpriced. There are some semi good deals out there. Look at the Dell 7100 and see if you can get a discount on that. Also make sure your monitor is 1080p (TRUE HD)

GAF I just received and installed my new motherboard and ram replacements and I just tried installing Blood Money again and I'm still getting the CRC error, which I assumed was a RAM problem and was the reason I had it replaced in the first place.

Now is there something I should be updating? Maybe I still need to check the ram voltage in my BIOS?

so here's where i want some people to ridicule me if this is bad setup, poor prices etc. my budget right now is $1500. i want to try to start something that i can add on without necessarily REPLACING every component, if thats even possible.

a couple questions that some basic reading up has tried to catch me up with, but really direct feedback might make it clearer in my head.

crossfire and sli card solutions: will my power supply be able to do this eventually if i decide to add a second card? are the performance boosts from this varied across application/games? is it better to get 2 mid-range/cheap cards than one higher-end for the time being then add a card when i can afford a better one? do these questions even make sense?

SSD: are the performance boosts really that significant? in gaming specifically? should i buy a SSD for the os and games, and then a sata for storage?

case: the mid tower case dimensions will fit everything i listed i think, but is there sort of favorite case out there?

Swap in a Hyper 212+, N520, Vendetta II for a HS.
Yes, 750w will drive 2 GTX460's. The 4 series scales 80-90$ in most games at high resolutions. However in general having a single card is better in almost every way (Besides performance/$) if possible.

The fan on the 212+ is a bit loud, but it also cools as well as $50 coolers and you can always replace the fan. Mounting most HS's is always a pain. You can get any assortment of other $45 coolers that all cool about the same.

Oh and the 9500 is bad. I know, I've used one. Overpriced, will cut you, 'ok-ish' cooling.
It does however run quietly and look nice. I also think the 9500 installation is worse than most.

Mmhmm. Also the only reason to get i7 imo is because you are next to a microcenter and get it for $70 or $100 off. Otherwise just get an i5, or if for some reason you need HT, get an 860.

Did some research on the Phenom II and it looks more bang for the buck, you can even get that 6 core one for under $300 I noticed. Might end up going with that. Anything special I shoudl know about the i7 vs Phenom II? 6 core worth it?

i5-750 is better at: Clock for clock speed, gaming, some movie editing, can overclock to 4.2Ghz on average
x6 1055T is better at: Having 2 more cores for same price, some specialized movie editing, stuff that actually uses 6 cores, Socket AM3 will stay for next generation of CPU's, can OC to ~3.8Ghz on average

Hey, why get 1600 with an i5 750? Baseclock is 133, so one should get 1333 RAM (I guess you're suggesting some OC'ing right?).

1600 sticks usually on sale for the same price, plus 8-8-8-24 @ 1600 instead of 9-9-9-27 @ 1333.

I hadn't upgraded my PC since 2005 and therefore have missed about 4 years of PC gaming.

Last week built a new system.

Core i5 750 2.66ghz 8mb cache
4gb 1333mhz RAM
Radeon 5850 1gb Graphics.

Runs beautifully but I can barely find anything good to play. I think PC Gaming kind of died while I was on hiatus. :lol

Am playing the recent Total War Games and enjoying them... also got Crysis as it killed me not being able to play it all this time. Graphics aside, I feel uninspired by the game.

I think I just spent a fair bit of money to find out that I am now well and truly a Console gamer.

If there are any amazing PC games that I have probably missed in this period, let me know. Until then, I'll just wait for Diablo 3.

And yes you need the 750W because the corsair 650w doesn't have 4x6pin. I suppose you might be able to use the molex connectors... but the antec is cheaper anyway.

Valve's catalog is well worth getting. TF2 is especially nice. Be sure to pick up the free Alien Swarm; it's beautiful and fun. The L4Ds are great, as is HL2, EP1, EP2.

The STALKER games are great, especially if you're looking for some real PC centric titles.

There are a whole host of console games that are outstanding on the PC. Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge (so gorgeous), and so on. (Don't be afraid of playing standard console focused games on it with a game pad--though, be sure to try out kb/m to see how you like it. Mirror's Edge, for example, works wonderfully with kb/m)

Civ 4 (the civ 4 pack) is pretty great.

There's a whole huge number of indie games worth picking up.

As for Crysis, it becomes a whole lot more fun when you vary up your suit action, and be sure to play on Delta.

Also YES BF:BC2 is excellent. Team Fortress 2 is more to my style though. Seriously amazing, amazing game.

Oblivion with mods is an entirely new game. Some have also liked The Witcher and there are like 8 Russian/European RPG's that have crossed over. Can't give you any names though.

A 5770 should give you a pretty good performance increase. If you really want to play games at 1080p though I'd go for a GTX 460 1gb card.

A BSEL mod fools the motherboard into thinking you have a higher FSB than you really do. Looks pretty simple for a Q6600. Just use electrical tape and tape over one specific dot which the picture shows.

anyone got some configurations I could use for the bios to make it 3.0Ghz I have tried(without BSEL) OCing before and it didnt work

There's a user made texture pack out there (an extra 1.4 GB download) that a user made which significantly improves and updates the look of The Witcher. I highly advise you get it (google search for The Witch high res textures)
