"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

And so it begins....

Got my case today, the rest of it comes tomorrow. Building a Gaming/HTPC to fit in my console. Sooooo excited.

Really? I can't get 7.9 with an i7-970? or above 7.3 with a SSD...:lol

Not even a 980x @ 4GHz scores a 7.9 on these dumbass tests.

Just don't take your WEI as a weighted performance number as anything more than a '~best guess' kind of thing.

That's why we have 3DMark, and 3DMark 11, btw, launches tomorrow!

Anyone want to tell me how to have the ASUS motherboard screen not to show up everytime, that and the damn bios screen.

Shows GTX 460 screen, then ASUS motherboard, then BIOS, then loads windows.

Still only takes 35 seconds from a cold boot to useable OS.

I should time from when the windows loading screen pops up.

In your BIOS options it will be called something like "Display Logo". It won't speed up your boot as the machine is POSTing behind the logo. I prefer to see the POST than the logo.

Alright, I'm using intel's system to overclock some stuff, even my RAM showed up as 1333 and I had to change it 1600 and to it's right timings.

Anyone have a good article on how to overclock and or if the intel Extreme tuning utility is good for that.

(Also how would one enable Intel Watchdog?)

Article on how to do it, so I don't screw up the computer? Why is my RAM showing up as 1333mhz, when it's 1600mhz....

Because 1600MHz is not a standard, it's just overclocked 1333, you have to set it manually.

Some mobos can't run 1600 (rare), so it defaults to a speed that will actually work with systems. Plus 1333Mhz is the highest standard iirc. Set it manually to spec speed and timings.

As for a guide 'CPU Name + Mobo' + Google.

Basics for everything are the same, nudge speed, test stability, nudge voltage, etc.

I'd also limit voltage to 1.3V / 1.35V load in windows.

Hmm on my asus motherboard i actually have an option to select if its 1600 DDR3. Not sure if it actually works though, Will know soon enough.

Haven't played with the BIOS too much, don't wanna ruin the computer just got it. :lol

I built my pc on the carpet too. CARPET BUILDING DEFENSE FORCE!

Hell yeah. I've done builds on carpets and beds. Doing it on a solid surface is always a better choice but it's not hard to not blow components up either on a static inducing surface. If you really wanted to be safe though you'd do your build in the nude... and you'd want to shave all your hair off. Or better yet submerge everything in a non-conductive liquid in your bath tub.

Shame I didn't see this before it was taken down. Now I'll have to wait to actually read it. Until the review goes back up, here is the conclusion along with some benches:

Conclusions
The lowdown on the GeForce GTX 570 is pretty straightforward: performance on par with a GeForce GTX 480, power consumption and noise levels on par with a GTX 470, and a price tag of 350 bucks. The card's stock cooler is nice and quiet, too.

We would have liked to see the GTX 570 separate itself from last year's Radeon HD 5870 in several games where it simply could not, such as Bad Company 2 and StarCraft II. Still, in the overall picture, the GTX 570 is clearly a notch above cheaper solutions like the GeForce GTX 460 1GB and the Radeon HD 6870. At high resolutions and visual quality levels in some of the most demanding DX11 games, the GTX 570 cranks out appreciably higher frame rates. I'm not convinced making the leap up to a GTX 570 is worth doing if you're running a single display that's two megapixels or less—including the incredibly popular 1080p resolution. A single Radeon HD 6870 or GTX 460 is probably all you need for a couple of megapixels. If you're planning on playing games on a four-megapixels monster like the 30" Dell on our GPU test rig—and I highly recommend doing so, if you have the means—then the 570 is worthy of a long, hard look.

You can get higher performance for just a little more money out of a pair of Radeon HD 6850s in CrossFireX, and I suppose that's AMD's closest competing product offering right now. But again, the foibles of multi-GPU configs will be in play, as will the stark fact of looming obsolescence with the Radeon HD 6900 series imminent. We said a week ago that we wouldn't pull the trigger on a pair of 6850s right now, and we remain in that holding pattern.

Our final take on the GTX 570 will have to remain a work in progress for the same reason. Stay tuned to this same channel for next week's episode of GPU Wars, when the truth about the 2010 crop of graphics chips will finally be revealed.

Yea it's not like I rub my ass on the carpet to create more static electricity. I usually touch the case as well before I get the part, just to be safe. Never had a single problem..

A lot of those benchmarks were also run at 2560x1600 which very few people are running which is why the 768MB looks like dog shit on a lot of those. I'm not sure if it will affect things with the higher end cards but I'm sure other outlets will have more of those numbers.

well i'm used to gaf where people troll answers like that, so i was asking before answering.:D

Get the Samsung

As for WD drives dying, the only issue I've heard of is the head parking issue with Green drives. They can die after 200,000 head parks, or something like that.

Damn, I didn't think the 570 would be in my price range. I can't wait to see more benches.

Edit: seems like it might push my Corsair 450VX, though.

Edit 2: looks like that's only for synthetic tests.

It depends on where you live as well. If you live in a dry part of the country, it's a lot easier to do it. I live in the southeast and couldn't create a static charge from my carpet if I tried.

For those of you who were interested in the white CM 690 II, Overclock3D has done a video review of the case. Unfortunately, it's yet another reminder of why I don't go to their site or watch their video reviews, but it does give you a look at the case outside of just photos.

Solid upgrade for $155 AR

Thanks! I'm really new to putting together my own rig. This upgrade will actually be the first thing I do to a pre-built machine I bought about 1.5 yrs ago. Seems that overclocking is one of the upsides to this card, so I hope that's not too much of a pain in the ass for me to figure out.

What is a head park? I was thinking of picking up a cheap green drive since I have almost managed to fill my 250GB drive in less then a week, but I don't want my drive to die in a few months.

Posting from the 1st computer I have ever built from scratch, amazingly enough everything worked out just fine :lol

My config:

AMD X4 640 3.0GHz
ASUS M4A87D/USB3
4GB RAM Corsair DDR3
Nvidia GTX460 768mb Super clocked
Corsair TX650w
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
Thermaltake Black V3 Case
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

So exited to have something you have built just magically work, thanks for all the help PC GAF.

I really do love that white case though.

Anyone know how these two monitors compare?

I'm looking for the best looking screen I can get for between $200 and $250. I'm leaning toward the VW246H, but wanted to double check if the ML248H had any differences besides a different base and thinner screen. Any other suggestions would be great, as well. These Asus monitors have very low response times, which makes them good choices for me. But if there are comparable ms rates in other monitors with more value in the price range, please let me know :lol

DAT CONTRAST RATIO

DAT CONTRAST RATIO
Doesn't really mean anything until the screen is in its intended environment. I'm looking for real-world feedback, not arbitrary numbers. Correct me if I'm wrong :lol

The screen with the lower contrast ratio looks way better aesthetically. It doesn't have a huge bottom bezel, which makes the other one look awkward in comparison.

Damn, that's pretty nice. I have the case in black for my hackintosh, so a white case would have been much more appropriate. :)

Can you run 3DMark 11 and post your score? That's a lot like the computer I want to build and I was just curious how well it would run.

Think I'll run the 3D Mark 11 today and see what I get. Really want to overclock to 4.0ghz for an everyday computer, would be insane.
