There is a spot on the stock cooler that lets you wrap the wire around it(like it is when you open the CPU package) so you only have what you need to connect it to the header. You should be able to wrap it around counter clockwise and then have enough to plug it in.

That's the spot that is rubbing against the metal *whatever-the-name-is-as-I'm-having-a-brain-fart* and I don't like it physically touching that. It's fine in it's current location (via zip-tie) until I get a different cooler.

Anyone have any good recommendations on monitors. This was the last thread I saw about them. Curious to know what's out there these days for good prices. I see a lot of people pimping the ASUS VH242H.

I was at Best Buy the other day and I discovered something. Microsoft doesn't officially sell that USB peripheral adapters by themselves anymore, but you can buy a new controller that comes with the adapter in the box. I just searched for them on their website but apparently they don't list them online.

The official receivers are pretty easy to find on eBay or Amazon, though they're clearly ripped from the official controller/adapter bundle you mentioned and repackaged. I think I payed between $10 and $15 for mine.

Get another ASUS model. There are better models on Amazon for the $10-$20 more. 5ms response and not great contrast ratio. Ones I've seen on amazon have better aspect ratio, mostly LEDs, and 2 ms response.

These two are both LEDs

So, I'm working on putting together a new build and I'd appreciate some feedback. Stuff like keyboard/mouse/disk drive aren't included because I'll just ressurect them from my current computer (and replace them should they break). As you might be able to guess, I really don't want to break the bank and budget is pretty tight, but I'll stretch it if you guys think it'll be crucial.

Also, I'll be carrying my PSU over.

Case: Thermaltake V3 Black Edition. Don't really want much special here, just a new, clean (no windows or LED's) and decent case to replace my current case. Any alternative suggestions are welcome, though this one does seem decent enough on the cheap.

Motherboard: ASRock HD55DE3 (Socket 1156). Saw an ASRock mobo in the OP, so I decided to go with GAF. It's cheap, and it's the right socket for i7/i5/i3. I was thinking an ASUS P7H55-M as an alternative, as I've never had an issue with ASUS hardware. Again, recommendations welcome.

CPU: Here's the first real conundrum. First up is the i5 650 3.2Ghz, mainly because it's cheap and seems perfectly capable. But then I start reading about i7's and the like, so now I'm wondering if it would be better to spend bigger and get something that'll last longer. For all I know there's a de facto i5 I should be going for instead. I've been out of the loop for a while, so I'd love a recommendation. This is likely the one place where I'd consider bumping up the component.

RAM: Was just thinking Corsair XMS3 TwinX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz for now. RAM doesn't really matter, it's cheap and I can swap it out/add more at any point. Went for these because they are mid-range performance wise and fairly cheap.

HDD: Looked at the SSD's but they are way to expensive still (maybe when I win the lottery). Went for a bogstandard Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM drive. Already have an external hard drive that I backup anything important to, so this doesn't really matter - unless the Seagate drives are prone to death.

GPU: Here's the second sticking point. 570's and 580's get expensive really quickly, so I'll likely be going with a 560, probably EVGA GeForce GTX 560 1024MB GDDR5 PCIe mainly because it's about what I paid for my current card when I bought that.

Please, let me know if I'm making stupid mistakes (particularly compatibility issues), alternatives are also welcome. Don't worry about price too much, if you can convince me it's worth it I'll likely go for it.

I'm fairly sure all the 6000 series radeon cards are coming with dirt 3. Also, I know that quite a few if not all radeon 6950s come with shogun total war 2. Check that online though.

That's not the case on newegg. The powercolot has nothing included.

You want sandy bridge (1155) P67 or Z68 MB. Clock for clock, it's faster. 1156 is a dead end.

2500K is the sweet spot. It easy overclocks to 4.2-4.5Ghz.

SSD offers a huge increase in general performance. If you can't afford the large ones, get a 60GB for OS and most used programs.

Like said above, you're better off going with the i5 2500k if this is for general use and gaming. i7 is not worth it for most people given the price premium and what it excels in over the i5.

Regarding your GPU choice, the 560 is a fine and good choice value-performance wise but it's sort of stuck between high end mid-range and low end high range. If you're willing to put down $30-$40 dollars more you can get a 1GB 6950.

Better yet, what wallpaper is that.
I'll upload the wallpaper when I get home, I'm assuming you're asking for the left one.

Smokey, I didn't get the VA panel (Benq BL2400PU) or the IPS (HP ZR24W), instead it was the LG W2442PA.

Saving up for a 2560x 27" or 30"

But damn, the Benq is nice. But for gaming apparently it's a tossup.

I have Phenom II X4 with an old gigabyte mobo. (still uses DDR2 RAM) Thinking of upgrading but not sure if I'll see any improvements.

Ideas, suggestions? I don't really want to spend over $150 especially since I'll probably need to buy more ram as well.

Not a good time to upgrade CPU if that's what you mean and given you already have a phenom II X4. Wait for bulldozer because 1. if bulldozer is really good and 2. if bulldozer isn't up your alley it will still push down the prices of current intel processors regardless.

Thanks but I was mostly asking about upgrading my mobo. Not looking to upgrade my chip just yet, but mostly want to know if I'll get any gains since my current board is kinda old (still uses DDR2).

If you plan on gaming on it then yeah I'd definitely say a new mobo is worth the purchase since modern parts take advantage of DDR3. Depending on your GPU and RAM you could see some performance gains.

Cool, currently I've got a Sapphire 5870 (OC) and 4GBs of DDR2 (Kingston HyperX). Suggestions on board/ram combo?

Am I correct in assuming that if I were to buy an SSD and install my OS/programs on it my computer would be much faster?

Depends on the SSD.

Overall, yes although with drives that have slow random reads/writes, you may be annoyed at random pauses.

Do you plan on sticking with AMD CPU in your next upgrade (as in the next time you buy a CPU do you plan on getting an AMD)? If so you should future proof and I can recommend an AM3+ mobo for you.

Done with AMD. I bought a new case, ram, mobo, and PSU and I still can't get rid of that stupid graphics error. Every amd card I get can't be broken. AMD graphics drivers are crap.

UPS is supposed to deliver my PSU today, but it's about to start raining and I have to be to work in half and hour. WHAT DO I DO?

Unless it's going to pour, the rain is unlikely to soak all the way through the shipping box, and then through the PSU's box, to damage the PSU. The UPS man probably won't leave it out in the elements anyway, unless he's negligent (mine puts my packages under my front porch, and under a chair, to keep rain off)

I just OC'd my 2500k to 4.2 for starters. My temps seem a bit high though. On Prime95 full load I'm getting 75c. Is that too high for 4.2 (1.128v)?

Cooler: CM Hyper 212 and Arctic Silver paste

I'll probably stick with AMD but who knows as I don't upgrade very often. Last mobo upgrade I did the 64x chips had just come out and virtually nothing supported them.

I found this and it looks good so far. Never got a board that didn't have onboard video but I think this will be ok since I normally don't use it.

There's not really a need for it if you have a dedicated card, which you have. That mobo is fine. The reason I ask is because AMD is moving to AM3+ this year with some support for some AM3 mobos so if you upgrade later to one of their new CPUs you'll need to buy a new mobo again.

Limit your search to these. That will allow you to go Bulldozer when it's released but still be compatible with your current proc.

Usually nice UPS delivery people put plastic bags over the box if it's raining.

I wouldn't upgrade your board if you weren't upgrading your CPU that needed a new board. All it does it limit your CPU options down the road and you're not going to notice a difference going from DDR2 to DDR3. Wait and upgrade your MB and CPU together.

Anybody here experience 'coil noise'?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeahtqeTrGo

First noticed it today when not using headphones in Crysis. From what I gather from google, it happens in menu screens and videos which have high framerates (ie >1000)

Has anybody found an easy safe fix for this, and is there a chance that it will just go away?

I have a 560ti if it matters.

Are you sure it's from the video card and not the power supply? When I used to participate in the Folding @ home program it seemed to be a pretty common issue when people where driving their video cards to the limit and stressing out the power supply. No real solution other than to not drive the PSU so hard or get a larger PSU that isn't as stressed out with the load.

Well, it only happens during the menu screen of Crysis, the noise stops when the game is running, so I assume it is not to do with how hard the computer is working.

Ok, my knowledge of it came from folders who were running the GPU at 100%. I found this thread that looks like it may be more in line of what you are seeing:

A couple of recommendations there including vsync settings and turning off some CPU bios settings that might help

I'm not really in any rush really. I can play pretty much anything I want at full settings with no problems. So far the only game that I've had to back down the settings a bit was with Shogun 2 because I was getting 40+fps. Otherwise, been pretty happy.

Got a surprise bonus at work and thought about upgrading since I'm always seeing ads for cheap DDR3 ram and my board only supports DDR2. Wasn't sure if I'd see much of a difference which is why i'm here.

It will be some but not too much. The main thing being that it will come with a more updated PCIe slot which means you will get some more performance out of your GPU (assuming you have a modern, mid or high range GPU) if it's bottlenecking. I would recommend an AM3+ board, it's not true that you need to buy mobo and CPU together if you know the socket the new CPUs will be using when you do decide to upgrade, which you do (AM3+).

I wish I could just fix it. But it looks like the only way to would be to buy an Nvidia GFX card but I don't have the money for it right now :/

Call the manufacturer. I've never had any trouble with any GPU I've purchased regardless of nvidia or AMD. You may be purchasing defective cards if you're buying from the same retailer.

Only thing I'd say is to bump to a HX 750 (if you want modular) or another 750W unit.
650W cuts it close on a lot of dual card setups.

I have a 560ti and I don't overclock it. I don't plan on doing any dual setups. My main use is for streaming which brings me back to my next point. I think 16GB of ram would be overkill for that as well so I just decided to get 8. I mean, I'm streaming with 4GB of ram right now and the quality is still vastly good.

Its happened with a 4870 512 and 3 different brand 6870 (Gigabyte, XFX, and my latest HIS).

So I doubt its that. There are others with the problem that can't fix it either. I google it and there are threads on it that just end after pages with no answers besides maybe underclocking the card which only works for a few people. Some people fixed it by going nvidia which I might have to do :/

Ok, on idle with a i5-2500K and a noctua-DH14 I've got an idle temp of around 25 and running a blend test on prime95 gave me a max of 50. I'm guessing that's pretty normal for a standard 3.3Ghz clock?

Also, I ran 3d mark vantage and got a score of P19822 with a HD6950 2GB, is that normal too or am I just stressing out about nothing.

I've OC'd my 2500k to 4.2 and am running about 55-57c (max of 60c on one core)with the Asrock Extreme 4 and the Corsair H60. My voltage is fixed at 1.2v though.

I took a quick peek over at Newegg and for around $20 more it seems you can get a much better power supply. That way you don't have to worry too much should you upgrade. One of the good things I like about Newegg are the reviews for each product. So take advantage of that and find one that seems be pretty popular.
