About the same amount of effort as opening up your case every 2 months to clean out the dust. Maybe less so even.
Really?
Got any links to beginners guides for that type of stuff? I always think that if something busted inside your system with the water cooling its a wrap. Hell I was paranoid with my little h70 at first.

@exodu5
Sweet. Ill look into the second 580 next month then. Add the two additional 3d monitors in October and phase II of the Beast should be complete.

Sorry for any typos, on mobile app.

Not till next year.

Not a big fan of waiting for stuff if there are alternatives available. Tomorrow is not promised :p

Throwing this on a new page. Would prefer an external set up that I can just plug in a drive (either IDE or SATA) and have it be powered by wall outlet and USB to PC.

Also, I have a bunch of older HDDs that came from old computers (mostly from my parents or my sister) however they're all IDE. They have a ton of pictures/whatever that I'd like to be able to give back to them. Are there any good converters, or external cases that can handle IDE to/and SATA?

Just submerge in mineral oil AMIRITE!?!?

Watercooling is for enthusiasts. You need to be willing to do hours and hours of research. Pumps, fittings, tubing, reservoirs, loop architecture, etc... It takes some additional creative effort if you want internal rads as well.

It should say right on it.

The top of the CPU should say what series it is though it likely won't specify the exact model. The series of the chip should let you know what to look up on Google/Wikipedia pertaining to its socket type. You can then install the CPU and then check what exact model it is.

Yeah, not down for all that at this stage. Id say I'm a borderline enthusiast but I'm not THAT enthusiastic lol.

I'm waiting to see what comes down the pipe then. There is nothing that throws a wrench at the 580 yet. I'm on a single 52" display though.

Smokey, you could sell the 580 you have to offset the cost of the 590?

No dice. The only thing it says is "Intel Confidential" which probably indicates a prelease or prototype model of some sort?

You say this, but you're looking at SLI 580s. Whether or not you want to admit it, you're one of us. *evil cackle*

www.overclock.net if you want to start checking it out, get a feel for it. It's a great forum with lots of really great folks to help out.

Probably a prototype or demo unit, wonder how he got it. Picture? Bottom of the CPU might give you some clues, might be able to compare the pin layout to CPUs from different sockets. Would be time consuming though, especially if you are totally clueless as to what it is and aren't sure how old it is.

Depends on budget and your aims.

I'd look into the FX fusion line right now, but I can't say how well it fits with an HTPC. I'd think it would be good though.

Engineering Sample CPU. Just take a pic of the top and back and post it.

I'm already over there. Great forum. I mostly hang around the GPU section. Also more and more people are going SLI just not with the top single card, so in that sense I dont see it as being that crazy :p

@teachinator
Yeah I could let the 580 go and offset the cost if I went that route. I think I'm going to see how another dcii fares in my system first. If that doesnt work out ill go 590 if I can find one. I think there are pluses and minuses to each scenario.

because HTPC cases are a little smaller, do you need to buy smaller video cards? Or am I missing something?

I don't want to spend much more than 350, I just want a better solution on my TV than streaming to the PS3 (which is great, but I want MOAR).

The A8 processor is both a CPU and a GPU on the same die. This is why I'm recommending it.

*edit* If you want something really easy to deal with, you could get something like a Zotac ZBox or Sapphire Edge.

Looks like socket 775 (Edit: Maybe not... probably is though?). Can't make out what it says. Maybe with some photoshop editing

I'm a bad man. My dream case came back in stock at Newegg at a killer price. Bought. If anyone is looking for a top tier case with possible options for an internal rad, this is what you want.

Yeah, looks like it starts with 07, if so it's socket 775, probably a C2D or C2Q. The 0 and 7 just look really close together for some reason.

A Penguin said:
It's C722W975. Anything on that? :/ Thanks for the help so far guys!
Yeah, C is for where it was manufactured, 7 is the year, 22 is something else with the date. Anyway, it's a 2007 CPU for sure if you're sure you made it out right, so that should point you in the right direction.

And the pins match up with a 775 socket, so it's not a mobile chip.

Edit again: If you're curious for more info on reading that number, look up CPU batch codes or FPOs.

Sweet, thanks a lot. Too bad it wasn't anything fancy. Was hoping I'd get lucky and not have to get a new CPU for this gaming rig I wanna build, lol.

so is it really worth the rma or pm that newegg deal to get 2x4gb of g. skill ram for $50 or should i just stick with my 2x2gb of g.skill ram that i got for $35

wondering since i may get my pc built today since my friends supposed to come over and build it for me since i dont kno what im doing lol

You're probably looking at paying an extra $10-$15 due to return shipping and the restocking fee to return it. Not as good of a deal in that case, unless you think you need the extra RAM (you probably don't) I'd say don't bother.

Or, you could just resell the RAM you have now instead of returning it.

thx for the advice i'll just keep the ram and im really freaking excited to finally having a gaming computer so waiting even more would have sucked lol

You can always add another 2x2 set later if you want to get up to 8gb.

So NewEgg is shipping the last 2 components for my pc. Should get them in a few days. So excited. Going to watch more "build a pc" YouTube videos.

I am seeing some interest in watercooling from some PC owners.
The best advice I can give is that it's extremely addictive and also make sure you FULLY research what you are planning to do.
This is the new coolant I will be using by a fellow watercooler mlwood, it's a copper mix and here is a link to his store:

Here also is a recent build by another watercooler, Malik and a link to his store:

But you can start out small and grow your project, there is no end to how big your imagination can take your PC.
There is very few rules to abide such as don't mix metals when buying parts.

Helping my friend find parts to build a computer.

Case
NZXT M59 - $54.98 with Price Match

CPU
Intel i7 2600k - $299.99 with Price Match
or
Intel i5 2500k - $209.99

Motherboard
???

Video Card
XFX Radeon 6870 - $164.99 minus $20 MIR = $144.99
or
eVGA GTX 560 Ti - $238.69 with Price Match minus $25 MIR = $213.69

RAM
Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Stiletto 8GB 2X4GB - $44.99 minus $10 MIR = $34.99

Hard Drive
1TB Seagate - $49.69 with Price Match

Solid State Drive
???

Power Supply
Corsair HX750W Modular PSU - $129.99

Optical Disc Drive
Asus Drive - $20.97 with Price Match

I'd say I have about $360 left in the budget for a motherboard + SSD. What are some good ones and are the rest of these parts looking good for primarily gaming? He may try his hand at some animation or something sometime.

so erm guys whenever im playing crysis on the 580 green artefacts appear sometimes. they're odd because sometimes it'll happen in the exact same area, but sometimes not.

googling 580 green artefacts shows that many people have the same problem. so is this some kind of stupid software thing (some people suggesting msi afterburner) or am i just going to return this shit?

Is your GTX580 overclocked?
Are you playing in DX10 mode?
If so then don't as it can be buggy, play it DX9.
If not then run afterburner and check what your GPU temps are when playing crysis, crysis is a very demanding game but with GTX580 you should be fine.

It's not overclocked, playing in DX10 mode yes. Apparently for other people it happens in DX10/11 games, so currently dling BC2 to test.

edit: the game has been fine when playing portal 2 and bf3 alpha.

second edit: some people are saying its undervolted.

third edit: theres a msi bios update to 'improve stability' looks like it ups the gpu voltage. the file format is .111? how do i open that?

mkenyon said:
That mobo will require a full system upgrade unfortunately. You could keep that GPU around a bit longer if you want, it's still pretty powerful.

What do you suggest? Will it help if i upgrade the CPU n RAM? since the GPU is good, or is there something im missing?

So, besides water cooling general keeping your PC cooler, and it also being a fun project to work on, what other benefits are there to water cooling over air cooling? Potentially quieter, I imagine. I just built my air-cooled rig and won't be replacing it any time soon, but looking ahead (2-4 years), perhaps I will join the water-cooling gang. Seems like a fun project.

It's a really rewarding project doing all that work to see a beautiful piece of nerdy man-art come together. Additionally, the cooling is unrivaled. We're talking about max temps on a crazy OC in the 40 degree range. Additionally, yeah, it makes your system whisper quiet.

Please guys, i need to know if i should just get a new "CPU" and will my system run games like battlefield 3, black ops, atleast games tht are coming up untill next summer.

Current Setup:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
4gb ram
Radeon HD 4870 1gb
Windows 7 64bit

The motherboard you are on is a dead socket, so you can't upgrade the CPU really. The RAM is DDR2 which is now replaced by DDR3. That means you need a whole new mobo/RAM/CPU. Check out the OP for suggested builds.

If you wipe your ass with $100 bills. Home Premium 64 bit is what you want. Can be had for cheap too if you are a university student.
Sometimes if you're a student, ultimate can be cheap.

Does anyone know where to get the Fractal R3 Silver Arrow without having to pay an arm and a leg for shipping? $110 is a nice price but then shipping on newegg is like $17, fuck that

Well what motherboard do you recommend?
I'll keep my 4870 Radeon 1gb, and just get a better CPU and RAM

lot's of watercooling-drooling here but I've seen only one other setup here besides mine lol

seriously now it's a lot of fun but even the great cooling potential and low noise can't hide the fact that

a. costs are completely out of proportion compared to a quiet air setup
b. installation and maintenance cost way more time and require quite some effort
c. it takes a massive amount of planning and research

bottom line, I love it but I'm not ever going to recommend it to anyone who comes into this thread asking (any kind of) advice. period :p I just assume someone grows into it eventually if he really enjoys tweaking and modding enough

for the average gaffer, CM212+Accelero Xtreme Plus+Quiet case = great cooling and less noise than a 360/PS3, for a fraction of the cost of water. And I know because I was on such a setup before :)

(yeah I know you can get some decent all-in-1 kits and all which will work fine, so maybe I just went nuts with my setup but so be it hehe)
