Any opinions on the Asus GTX 580 DirectCU II vs. MSI GTX 580 Twin FrozR II.

The msi one is cheaper. I'm planning on overclocking but also do not want the card to be super loud! Any thoughts on which one to go for?

Both are great cards.

I have the ASUS (Not the 580 but 570) and it's pretty damn quiet unless I pump up the fan speed above 50%.

Others in this thread have the MSI, see what they say.

Have you overlocked and got decent results?

If you want the quietest 580, you should see if you can find one that uses an Accelero Xtreme Plus cooler, like the Sparkle x580. Those may be hard to find though, or go for a premium price, but I think they're probably as good as it gets temp and noise-wise for cooling.

Citizen K said:

Oh yeah, definitely. Jacked up the memory, shader clockand gpu speed. The current games I have really don't need the extra boost as of yet since they all run at high setting and show 60fps.

You can even up the voltage to push it a little more, but you have to know what you are doing so you won't fry your GPU.

Smokey on here has an ASUS 580, he could probably give you direct "580" results since mine is a 570.

can somone point me to the coolest waterblock cooler.
i plan overclocking my i7 to 4.5+ghz
thx in advance
edit: i've been reading around that an apogee xt is pretty good

Nah, I'm suggesting a 2500K and a P67 mobo. I mean, if you do serious multi-threaded stuff like video encoding or multimedia stuff, the 2600K would be beneficial. If you have a big budget and aren't trying to cut costs, the 2600K is still a great proc anyway. In 2 years, it'll be in a better place than the 2500K due to hyperthreading.
How about this...

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz
ASUS P8Z68-V LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB OC
Intel 320 Series 120GB

(edit - actually pretty similar price)

I have the Asus 580. Great temps and is very quiet. Both of the cards will give you cool temps, however the ASUS is a 3 slot monster while the MSI is dual slot. If you plan to SLI then I would go with MSI, otherwise I can only speak from my experience and my ASUS 580 has treated me well.

can't wait to get my gtx580 though.

i put you on the pc game and now you trying to challenge me lol. even got you stepping up from a 560 to a 580 now :p

Also:

Your Current Specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz / 2.0 GB (DDR) / A8N-SLI Premium / Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5
Budget: 500$ + Canada (For now, I only want to change the CPU, the Motherboard and the RAM).
Main Use: Gaming, Emulation (GC/Wii), Video Editing, General Usage (Word, Web, 1080p Playback).
Monitor Resolution: Currently playing at 1360x768 and will later do 1920x1080
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: BATTLEFIELD 3!
Are reusing any parts?: Power Supply (Antec TruePower 550W) and the 5770.
When will you build?: In about 2 months.
Will you be overclocking?: No.

I'm currently thinking of buying:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition Thuban 6 Core Processor 3.3GHZ Socket AM3 Retail Box
MB: Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 AMD 990X AM3+ ATX DDR3 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 2PCI SLI SATA3 USB3.0 Motherboard
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Stiletto 8GB 2X4GB PC3-10666 DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit

Things is, should I buy this, or should I wait for the Bulldozers and buy THIS:

CPU: AMD FX-6100 6 Core Zambezi.
MB: Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 AMD 990X AM3+ ATX DDR3 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 2PCI SLI SATA3 USB3.0 Motherboard
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Stiletto 8GB 2X4GB PC3-10666 DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit

I'll be buying in 2 weeks instead of 2 months. Should I bite?

Are you going to be using all six cores? If not, I would sub in a 955 Black Edition, save about 100 bucks and maybe switch to Bulldozer sooner without feeling too bad.

Good point. I'll do that.

So I'm getting 'This program has stopped responding' errors on loading certain games. It's happened on loading Crysis 2 saves and now upon loading the menu of Dirt 3. Just as the game is about to finish loading my cpu usage drops from about 85% to 2% and if I alt+ctrl+delete out of it it'll show the 'stopped responding' message. I also have Dirt 3 and Bad Company 2 showing messages on load to change my colour scheme (to switch aero off, which I always decline).

Do you think this is to do with my overclock?

I'm running i5 2500k (at 4.2Ghz)
4GB DDR3 ram
GTX 570

My ram isn't being maxed so I don't think that's the problem. But I did run the Asus P8P67 Pro auto overclock tuner thing which may have changed something unexpected. Is there a way to reset all my motherboard settings and remove the overclock then start again?

Ok, I have a question about the $600 build. The GTX 460 page says it requires 2 6pin PCI connectors but the power supply listed in the build only has one. Is that just a mistake or is one ok or is there some kind of adapter to make another 6pin PCI connector?

I ask b/c the power supply I'm looking at is the same way and I'd hate to snag it up and not be able to connect my vid card.

so pc gaf how did i do with my build already ordered everything
im so glad i have a microcenter nearby saved me a ton of $$ with their i5/z68 combo deal

btw i'll be able to overclock my i5 and 460 just fine right?

Case:COOLER MASTER HAF 922
GPU: Nvidia gtx 460 1GB
CPU:Core i5 2500K LGA 1155
Mobo:Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 LGA 1155 Z68 ATX Intel Motherboard
PSU: Antec BP550 Modular

Ram:G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3

edit:bleh just looked up the bp550 and apparently theres 2 versions? i ordered mine off amazon did i fuck up since i may get the weaker version?!

friend of mine decided to clean my case fan when i was out and left the computer open.. yeah

now it makes one hell of a noise. Im guessing he cleaned it the wrong way? guess i'll have to get a new one :/

Hey guys, quick question. Just finished building my new computer a few days ago and everything seems fine, however my front USB and headset aren't working, I'm guessing that I put the front panel USB connector in the wrong spot but I can't figure out where else to put it since it's already in the USB slot, also I tried to update my sound drivers with the utility CD and it keeps giving an error, any help would be appreciated.

Just bought more stuff. :) Just need three more items. Should have them all by the end of next week.

But yeah. I can't decide on which motherboard to get. So many of them.

It's between those below.

My components I already bought thus far. I want to overclock my 2500k or 2600k depending on which I eventually decide to get to 4.2ghz. Will buy a PSU when I decide on my CPU and MB.

Fractal r3 case.
OCZ agility 2 SSD.
Gskill Sniper 8gb ram.
Dual cathode light kit.
Bytecc sata 3.5 enclosure.
Samsung F4 HD.
Hyper 212 fan.
Artic Silver 5.
EVGA 560 Ti
2 Lite on 24X DVD writer drives.
Windows 7 OS.

alright, temp check time after putting everything together.

Running a GTX 560ti twin frozr with 2 fans, and an i5 2500k with the stock fan

the case has a pretty bad regular fan that doestn do much (it does one hell of a noise now though, lol). Its also a generic case with not much in terms of cooling or air vent.

GPU idle is between 45 and 50, hits 60-71 at most when gaming at full settings

CPU is idling at 45-50 (seems a bit high), going up to about 60-70 when gaming

keep in mind that im using the latest Real Temp so those are not the BIOS temp readings

should i be worried?

First, decide if you need/want Z68 or P67. Since you already have an SSD, the only question there is do you have any need for the integrated graphics? For either running a 3rd monitor w/o needing another videocard, or for QuickSync video encoding? If yes, then Z68. If not, P67. With the Z68 boards, there aren't quite as many options yet so it's probably not too hard to settle on one. With P67 though, you'd probably want to just start off at deciding on the connectivity options you need and go from there (unless you're planning on using CrossFire/SLI, in which case start with PCIe lane division arrangements).

Does any 6950 beat the Gigabyte 560Ti SOC?
I have a slim interest for 3D, but mostly looking for a capable GPU for the right price at the moment.

Also, is Fractal Design R3 still the go to case in the $100 range?

Need help on my build. Main focus is to play BF3 and Skyrim on medium to high, but not to spend half my budget on a GTX 580. The prices I'm quoting are from ebuyer.com (UK). I'm a bit uneducated when it comes to this sort of thing, but I scanned the thread and other forums to look at what parts were considered the best in their price range. If you see anything that looks unnecessary, poor value for money, better price elsewhere or poor quality, please please please let me know:

HD: Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache £40.98
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £163.29
Fan: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus Socket 775, 1156,1155 AM2, 1366, AM3 Processor Cooler £26.36
Case: Fractal Design Define R3 Black Pearl Case £75.98
GPU: MSI GTX 560Ti TWIN FROZR II 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI Out PCI-E Graphics Card £193.47 (was told MSI or ASUS DirectCU II were considered the best out of these, but MSI runs coolest)
RAM: ? (At least 2x 2GB)
Motherboard: ? (Something good that goes best with the above)
PSU: ? (according to you guys I need 500W)
DVD: (something good that goes best with the above)

I'm going to do the building myself, but my brother who has built a few PC's will be on hand if I need him.

do read further pages for some more info on factors affecting performance though

I've got an EK Supreme HF Copper/Acetal and there's nothing to complain about, but as you can see all blocks are within 1 or 2 degrees of each other ... (amount of) radiators is where the difference is at

First time I've ever bought an after market graphics card cooler. It seems like a lot of money, but the stock 6970 cooler is driving me crazy. Anyone have any experience with that cooler, if so how quiet is it?

it's great, even at 100% it will not make more noise than your average 1200 rpm casefan and the cooling performance is downright awesome, will cool that 6970 down like nothing else

do make sure you have some decent airflow going on as the hot air will be spread into the case not out the back (though I doubt a 6970 gets as hot as my overvolted GTX480 did)

Probably want to try and get the cheaper OEM version of your CPU since you're buying the Hyper 212.

I looked into that but I could only find it for a few quid cheaper and I could do with the manuals and any extras just in case.

I've had to scale back a bit from your build as you can see. I remembered that I actually need money to buy some games to play on it!

MADNESS!

I am planning to build a HTPC this winter. I looked at one guide which was the avs forum one and some of the stuff in there was old. This is my first time do a HTPC so I hope I got some of the stuff correct. For the OS, I read that Win7 home premium should be used. I checked the price on newegg and it costs more than Ultimate. I can get Ultimate from school for $80. Would I be better off using Ultimate instead? For ram, I assume 4GB would be enough and PSU a good 500W should be enough too

What would recommendations be for the following parts:

Video card
Sound card
hard drive

Am I missing anything else? I'm looking to spend 600- 700 on the HTPC and it needs to play 1080P content well.

Thanks.

Definitely. Ultimate will add the option of running a Virtual Windows or Windows XP instance, which could be nice in certain cases. I mean, you're only gaining features going to the Ultimate...might as well.

Also, your student version is likely a full retail copy, and not an "Upgrade" version, which will mean easier installation.

Hey exodu, do you know if a corsair h100 will fit in a haf 922 and haf x?

So I bought a 650D Corsair case.

It comes with two 200mm fans. Do I take them out and replace them with four 220/240mm fans?

I need to cool it as good as I possible can. I wish the sidepanel, was one big Vent box.

Omiee said:

Absolutely. Either case can accommodate a 240mm rad.

You'd need to remove the top fan on either case to put it in. The 922 would be a great fit for it. Remove the top fan, and stick in the H100. Take the 200mm top fan you removed, and stick it on the side panel instead.

2x 200mm fans is quite a bit of cooling.

Just wanted to check on this because I'm always super paranoid about temps. Running a standard clock 2500K with a noctua DH14 in a HAF X and I'm getting 25c idle, around 35-40c while playing games and just under 50c after a few hours running prime 95. That sounds right, right?

GPU temps sound great. CPU temps sound pretty representative of the stock cooler. Maybe a bit high but the ambient temp in your case might be high if the airflow is poor.

My non-overclocked i5 2500k with the Hyper 212 cooler idles around 40 and averages 52 under load. I am using a Corsair Obsidian 650D case though. even in my warm room ambient is around 33-34.

I wouldn't be worried though.

Personally I went with the MSI P67A-G65. There's a combo deal on Newegg to save $25 with a 2500k or a 2600k.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ubCategory=280&SortField=0&PageSize=10&page=1

Also the HardOCP review really sold me. My only gripe so far as been that the Hyper 212 cooler got in the way of the Corsair Vengeance ram I bought so I RMA'd the ram for the low profile version. The Vengeance ram has an insane heatsink though. It's like 21mm of height on top of the RAM. It's not typical. Everything else about the motherboard has been roses. Love it.

Looks like the case of crashing BC2 is coming to an end. Time flew by and I played about 3 hours of BC2 with no outside fan blowing in, however I did leave the side panel open (testing things out in phases). I used EVGA to give the the OSD of the temp and fps as I'm tweaking settings still and the temp never got over 65C with the 80% fan speed at 60C profile I set up.

Since my card just dumps the heat into the case, I'll probably leave the side panel off until I get at least two 140mm fans for it (the side panel). Haven't decided if I'll put another 140mm on the top, though I probably will since I can get three of them from Amazon with free shipping.

Any reason why you didn't want an air cooler instead, especially since the h100 is $30-40 more than the best air heatsinks?
