As long as they are 6950/6970 cards, they will work fine in CF. You would want same amount of video ram, but core and memory speed doesn't matter. AMD is good at load balancing between different core and memory speeds.

Awesome, thanks. I'll wait around a bit to see if that card comes back in stock (it really is a great card), if not I'll probably look at the Dirt 3 edition.

What's the recommendation on 23''ish 120hz monitors?

Does anyone have an opinion on this monitor? And is there anything better in a similar price range?

I recently tried out the LGIPS231P. It is a 23 inch 1080p IPS panel that goes for $250, although Microcenter had it for $200 last week. I'm not sure if they're keeping that deal or not. Best Buy also stocks an alternative version with HDMI but no speakers. It's also LED in case you particularly wanted that.

It really looked amazing compared to my Asus 236H in terms of viewing angle and colors. Input lag was negligible, but it did have noticeable ghosting in fast paced games.

My GPU work. I was using DisplayPort, but when I switched to DVI it works perfect. The problem lies either with the DP cable, the DP to mini DP adapter or the GPU's mini DP port.

Looking for a little help. I'm wanting to upgrade from a 8800 GTS to a 560 Ti but I'm not sure which brand to stick with. I've heard really good things about Evga, but it looks like I'd save a bit if I went with this. Don't know much about PNY... Any recommendations?

The guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but with the 3rd party GPU vendors, you want to look at warranty and their customer support. If you get a reference card, the hardware is the same across vendors. Looking at these cards, they're both OC'd to the same clocks. So I'd look at reviews to try and gauge reliability. Google that specific card and see what they are saying on the enthusiast forums. EVGA is lifetime warranty and PNY is also lifetime if you register the product at the PNY site. From my quick searching, the card seems good. I wouldn't get a more expensive card clocked at the same freqs.

Appreciate it! I'll check a few other forums.

sooo....newegg still has no restock of the card I was going to buy with my new PC build. Here it is : SAPPHIRE Toxic 100312TXSR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102951

Anyone has some tips for another card such as this one? Can be a bit more costly, don't care. Or if someone knows where I can buy the Toxic that would be great.

thanks

Guys, I just got a A6-3400M notebook. Anyone here familiar enough with fusion processors to tell me what I need to do for this lappy? Catalyst doesn't even install on this system...

Reposting because I didn't get any replies... anyone?

What are some good speakers/woofer for under $200. I checked the audiophile thread but that seems to be the thread for crazy setups that are way way way out of my range.

Heh, I just asked about this last page because I have one (and it's fantastic), but I want another for CrossFire and can't find it anywhere. I've got a track on newegg now, so I'll let you know when I see it back in stock.

I just got my 5850 to replace my 9600GT. Is there anything special I should do aside from uninstalling PhysX and display drivers?
You may want to look for a driver sweeper-type of program. Forget what a good one is, unless I JUST named it there and forgot.

Oh, yes. Looking at Newegg the Batman deal also extends to MSI cards, saw it on the Twin Frozr II 560 Ti specifically.

Found Driver Sweeper. I guess it's that?

Also, I just saw that it accepts two PCI-e power connectors. My PSU has two, but they run along the same cable (similar to being able to plug two IDE drives in one cable). Is that fine? I checked the specs page and it says it has two 12V rails. This is safe right?

Ye its safe. Driver Sweeper is a must though. I got a new card and my games were crashing every other hour with drivers crashing and restoring. Did driver sweeper today and shit is smooth!

Remember, sweep after you uninstall.

Oh thank the PC gaming race Gods.

Thought my keyboard was finished because using quotations was like pressing CTRL-A. VERY annoying. A little disassembly and some good ole cleaning solved those problems though!

Some benchmarks with the new PC I built (my very first build!):

Intel Core i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz
ATI Radeon HD 6850
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM

All games at 1680x1050 res:

Crysis: max settings, no AA - 45 fps average
Battlefield: Bad Company 2: max settings, 2x AA, 4x AF - 70 fps average (on server with 32 players)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - max settings, 4x AF, Direct X11, Tessellation on - 60 fps

Shocked at how well this system handles these games. Have never owned such a high-end machine. Feels good, man.

It really is. Here's what I upgraded from:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ @ 2.9 GHz
ATI HD Radeon 4670 1GB
4GB DDR2 667 RAM

Yeah, I know.

The second I began playing Crysis on max settings without so much as a hitch was when I knew the entire build process was worth it. I was actually overwhelmed with how the game ran because I've never experienced such clarity and smoothness running a demanding game like that before with any PC build I've had. Sames goes for Bad Company 2 and Deus Ex (which looks absolutely fucking remarkable, by the way).

Can't wait to try The Witcher 2 next. Couldn't even play that on my previous machine.

Just installed. Been playing TF2 for an hour. Wow, I miss being able to max this game at 60FPS. Temps are stable at 58c, and also very quiet. I AM PLEASED. It's only 10c more than my 9600GT.

How does GPU memory work? I always thought the game would just dump textures into GPU memory but apparently not.

Not bad for an under $600 system eh?
IF you could post more impressions and such (including a part list of what you did go with) I'd appreciate it.
More game benches / impressions would be great too.

Should i get a Corsair 650W 650AX or Corsair 750W 750AX for this biuld (It's only a 20€ price difference). I'm ordering tomorrow and this is the last thing I need to nail down. Big thanks to everyone who helped me.

no difference really, both will easily run your setup and both are too weak for SLI 580 (well both will run it but 850W is recommended for that)

only advantage 750W has is if you would go SLI midstream cards in later years maybe, or if you want to shove in 20 harddrives :p

So whats the general consensus on the G500 Laser mouse from Logitech? got a 50 percent off code and I'm thinking about purchasing one.

Bought one with my new rig recently and I like it enough, has some pros and cons. The trick scroll wheel that changes from clikcy page/line scrolling to free scrolling is great for long pages and pretty neat overall. The forward and back buttons are a bit small but well placed for my hand, sometimes I hit the button in between but I don't know what it does. The on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment is nice in that it is on top of the mouse rather than underneath (looking at you Razer Deathadder). The L&R click buttons are a bit small at the most front point and kind of points my fingers at a weird angle to get around the scroll wheel and back onto the buttons. The build quality is ok, it feels a bit plasticy (sp?) and the paint has already worn of on main contract points (heel of the hand and L&R buttons). The adjustable weight system is nice if you like a heavier mouse, can jam a few in the bottom. In terms of ergonomics, it feels good in the hand, don't get tired after long use, pinky tends to rub on the mouse pad but thumb is cradled.

tl;dr would I buy it for 50% off? Yes, I would buy two.

I bought this Radeon HD 6870 from Amazon like 2 weeks ago for the free Deus Ex deal. I submitted the rebate a week ago and now the thing is dying on me. I'm getting artifacts on my desktop and the fan is on high.

Will Amazon accept a return if I submitted a rebate but the product is defective?

So I'm looking to get a new monitor with an HDMI port and a DVI so I can hook up my PC to the dvi and my 360 to the hdmi and have a button to press to switch easily between the two. I don't want to have to buy a converter to hear the sound on my 360. Any suggestions?

Will they even take return? Shouldn't you RMA it to XFX instead of Amazon?

No clue, I've never been in this position with a submitted rebate and defective item within 30 days of purchase.

I emailed Amazon about it. If they tell me I'm dead to them now, then I'll just go through XFX.

Hey guys, first post in one of these topics. I'm pretty familiar with building computers but don't keep enough to know all the details, so I thought I'd ask how my planned build looks and if I could save money or need something more. I'm in Canada by the way (buying from Memory Express).

I'll be using this for higher-end gaming as well as programming, Maya and Photoshop.

($304.99) CPU: Core™ i7-2600K Processor
($179.99) MOBO: ASUS P8Z68-V
($119.98) RAM: 2 x Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 (2 x 4GB)
($179.99) GFX: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1GB

Using my old case (Cooler Master something or other? IT has blue lights and many, many gigantic fans). My 200GB HD is still working fine so I'm not buying a new one just yet (just got a 1TB external for school anyways) and so is my DVDRW. The only other thing is PSU... I believe I have a 500watt one in there right now. I may upgrade to around 650~ but I'm not sure yet. Most of the calculators I've tried online say I'm fine with 500.

Any suggestions? : )

I returned a 6850 to Amazon because it was acting funny on me so I don't' see why they wouldn't in this case. I always prefer to go through the retailer than the manufacturer whenever possible (sometimes it's not though.) The rebate thing is weird though, I always wait as long as possible on rebates because for a lot of rebates once you've used them you can't return the item anymore.

My advice would be to either 1. Ask Amazon, or 2. Just return it to Amazon and see what they do. It's entirely possible if you never bring it up they won't either. It also might matter to them fi you want a refund or a replacement.

What's your budget? I imagine you also want the monitor to have a headphone jack because almost any monitor in a reasonable budget is going to have awful speakers.

Hey, so I tried running GTAIV as a benchmark for my i7 920@3.8ghz, 6 gig ram, 580GTX system and maxed out at 1080p it runs like 1fps slideshow.

If I drop the settings so it's using under 1gig of videoram resources by lowering the vehicle density and dropping shadows from ultra high -> high, it runs 40-60fps, when there's not many cars/objects to render it's 60fps all the time, but once the street view comes in with cars and buildings and pedestrians the framerate dies. This is with no SSAA or anything.

Is something going wrong?

nope :D, that's how the game works :p

I always thought it was my 9800gtx+ keeping it unplayable at higher quality. Bleh, guess I still won't ever finish the game!

Bebpo said:

Or you know, you could settle for a teeny amount fewer cars ;) and still have the game run at 60 fps.

Even when I minimize everything, so the density is like 20/100 and detail 20/100 and turn every settings from very high -> medium and AF from 16x->4x

It runs 60fps in the starting room and when I step towards the hallway to go outside it stutters and turns into a 1fps slideshow. And outside it's 1-2fps slideshow. I thought I was able to get 40-60fps with some drops, but double checking they're not doing it.

Doesn't seem right. I'm going to try dropping the textures from high->medium and see if that fixes everything.

I'm just worried that either:
1) some of my v-ram on my new card is defective since this is the only game I've tried that pushes beyond 500meg vram

or

2) stuttering/slideshow is because card isn't getting enough power. I checked my temps and it's maxing at 8V on the 12V+ rail its on. So it still seems like it's under the limit.

Oh I thought you were exaggerating when you said 1fps slideshow, if that''s the case then surely something is afoot.

Yeah, uh, I just tried dropping to 800x600 resolution, everything set to LOW so GTAIV looks like a PSP game.

Still get 1fps; none of the settings seem to affect anything.

Which is weird because on this same system with my old card it ran fine. Sure I couldn't set the textures past medium and had to keep things down to get 30fps+ but at least it ran. So I change cards to a way better one, install the latest Nvidia drivers and suddenly game won't run past 1fps anymore outside.

I have no idea wtf is going on. No other game has given me problems yet as I test around with my new setup.

What drivers are you using? Also keep in mind that d3doverrider ( in case you are using it ) can mess with the game, but I doubt it can attribute to the issues you're having.

Ohhh, I'm using d3d overrider for triple buffering; probably it then.

Is there a list of games that d3d overrider messes with, so I know when to turn it off?
