"I need a New PC!" 2011 Thread of reading the OP. Seriously. [Part 2]

I'm planning to go for 4.5GHz, but if I can do better I will. Every CPU I've bought has been a crap OCer, or I didn't have a good enough motherboard to really take advantage of it. My Athlon II X3 right now is the best one, I got a 500MHz OC (seems average, maybe a bit high) out of it and seems limited by the cheapo board I'm using, not temps or voltage.

I don't think I'm going to bother with the Microcenter combos at all, I'd be asking a friend to pick them up and ship them to me, and if the only one that's really worth it/suits my needs is the $350 combo (over $380 with tax, even more after shipping and compensation for picking it up) I can get something for less at Newegg.

Think I'll go with the P8P67 EVO. Was thinking about the PRO but the EVO is $15 less thanks to a combo.

Someone tell me if this is a decent buy and if it is overkill for my needs, or what.

http://store.redbarncomputers.com/Customkititems.asp?kc=JAL-i3&eq=

I've chose these options...

Intel Core i3-2120 CPU 3.30GHz Dual Core [Add $39.99]
ATI Radeon 4350 with 512MB GDDR2 [Add $49.99]
V.92 56K PCI Fax Modem [Add $19.99]
Logitech Media Combo MK200 [Add $19.99]
Logitech LS21 Multimedia Speaker System [Add $29.99]
20" LCD Monitor 1600x900 [Add $139.99]

Total is $929. Let me know what you think. I need to get a PC within the next couple weeks and I definitely can't assemble it myself.

Do you really need a modem?

No, no, no, no, no. Horrible deal. HORRIBLE.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-performance-radeon-geforce,3018-7.html

Just look at where the 4350 falls in the hierarchy. It's an abysmal card that you'll struggle getting by with today's games on the lowest settings even.

Seriously reconsider. For that price you could honestly build an amazing PC. Or go with another pre-built brand/site/machine as that one is just terrible.

Quick question for you guys.

As part of getting a new PC, I'm trying to sell off my old stuff.

Where do you get extra CPU and RAM plastic cases? I'm pretty sure I don't have them anymore from when they were new.

Yeah that's seriously an awful, awful value. That is not even on par with the $400 build in the OP.

Building a PC is not hard at all, anybody with functioning hands and the mental capacity of a pre-teen should be able to do it. If you're adamantly against it though, you can have PCs built for a fee from NCIX (I think the US site price matches now, and they do build for $50 as far as I know). CyberPower or even Dell should be cheaper than the one you have posted.

Not sure if you can buy those new. Only thing I can think of would be to check ebay.

So I'm thinking about upgrading my PC for Skyrim. For a GTX460 and i5 2500K will my old power supply work? It is a Antec True Power Trio TP3-550 550W ATX12V.

42A max load on the +12v rails and it has PCIe connectors, you should be okay. And that's not a bad board for the price. It's one of the ones recommended in the OP, I think.

is this okay? Sry for some german words, the last "Rechner Zusammenbau" is only the Service for computer assembly.

I'm about to finish my build since my 2 laptops are in a mess. Micro Center has a swank deal on a $20 motherboard comboed with an i3 2100, but I want to know if I should really avoid it. Otherwise it's a $100 difference for the CPU & mobo.

From Micro Center:
Intel Core i3 2100 - $100
MSI H61M-P23-B3 - $20 (it has a 3-star average on Newegg with complaints about it dying after a few months of use)

From Newegg:
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD - $60
Sony CD/DVD Burner #AD-7261S-0B - $20

Already Bought:
Antec High Current Gamer 620W PSU
Cooler Master Elite 430 Mid-Tower Case
Crucial Ballistix 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM
Gigabyte Radeon 6850 GPU

That's great. No changes. Make sure RAM is 1.5V

Hmm. 10,12% 1 egg I can tolerate since mobos are finicky, but that seems a bit too high for my personal taste.

is 530W enough if i want to OC the 560TI in 1-2Years?

edit:

EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB or ASUS ENGTX560 Ti DCII/2DI/1GD5, 1024MB?

Which have more power, which is more quiet?

Got my SSD, Blu Ray drive, and fans today.

Just waiting on the motherboard and CPU (should be here tomorrow).

For the 600T with the mesh side panel
1OMYI.png

I have four 120mm Scythe Kama 2 fans to slap in.

The case comes with a front 200mm fan blowing in, and a top 200mm fan blowing out, as well as a back 120mm fan blowing out.

I've got a 6970 with a reference cooler.
GF0Nh.jpg

Should I mount my side panel fans as intake or exhaust?
Maybe reverse the top fan and the front fan so they're both intakes, and the side and back are exhausts?
(Or reverse the front fan so it's an exhaust and have the 4 side panel fans as the intake? Though the front 200mm is a bit harder to get to if I wanted to reverse it.)

Thinking of getting a GTX 580 (have a 6870 but even after completely reinstalling windows getting extra cooling for the actual card etc the drivers still crash randomly).

I think I'd also need a bigger case also since my 6870 barely fits inside of it anyway. That 600T above looks nice! Is it roomy? Also, will a 580 play nice with a Phenom II X4 956 (3.4GHz) and 12GB DDR3 at 1600?

PC thread, I'm depressed. Was in "wait for bulldozer" mode, to build a new pc (not to buy it specifically, but to see what it did to the market - verdict seems to be "well, nothing). Now I feel like I should be in "wait for ivy bridge" mode, but don't really want to wait that long to build a new pc, but don't want to build a dead model.

If I bought a lower end sandy bridge based comp, could I use ivy in the same mobo in the future?

Yep.

Never be in the "wait for" camp unless the product your waiting for has been reviewed by press and is coming out next week. Theres always some better in the computer industry, its not worth waiting.

I've got the AsRock p67 Extreme 4. I'm going optical out my MoBo to my Denon receiver. I can watch movies and run tests from my audio properties page, and my reciever gets the proper signal.

I can't find a way to get any games to play in 5.1. I really only have 3 games to test right now, Rage, Hard Reset and Mirrors Edge. Is there maybe a steam setting I'm over looking?

When I built the rig, I don't think the Xonar was in the suggested build, do I need it to play my games in true 5.1?

No guarantees on Ivy Bridge. If you can spring the money, go for a 2500K build, otherwise, get a 2100 and you can at least eventually upgrade to a 2500K if IB isn't compatible.

I have a microcenter somewhat close, I was thinking of a 2600, as they have a regular deal there on mobo/2600 combo. I like the advice guys, you're right that you can just "wait for the next thing" forever. One last question - any big innovative GPU upgrades in the pipeline less than say, 3 months out?

2500K + P67 or Z68 motherboard. 2600K only if you're going to make heavy use of 8 threaded applications like video encoding.

GPU...nothing is certain. AMD is rumored to bring their cards out fairly soon, though that was the case for Bulldozer a year ago as well. If you have a decent card to hold you over, then you can wait, but I wouldn't postpone the entire build for it.

I'm squeezing a couple months probably out of my e6320 and gts8800 320 (lol :(), then will probably go with that suggestion. Thanks for the good advice, this is my favorite thread.

I'm just starting to put together my computer and realized I messed up. The case I bought does not have the correct hole placement for my motherboard standoffs, so I can only put in 7/9 now. Is it necessary that I have a standoff for each hole?

Side intake for sure. It's going to feed a lot of cold air for your GPU and CPU to take in.

No. You should be fine, put in as many as you can.

Yeah. Wait for Ivy Bridge only if you don't already have the money set aside at this moment, or are looking to get a new notebook.

The only tangible benefit I can see happening is a higher max multiplier of 63x which was just revealed, but then, who's been able to even go up to 57x this gen?

I never realized the difference from 19" to 23" and 1440 x 900 to 1920 x 1080, wow. 5 inches is a big difference. Insert sexual joke here.

Anyway I'm having a blank moment right now and the cable that came with my GTX 460 was for my monitor and the name of that cable is? I want to say DVI to VGA but I'm not 100 percent and I'm not going to order something I don't know for sure. I'll hit myself later if it's that and I forgot what it was called.

That's what she said...

Just got an Asus 23" 1080 monitor last week. Upgraded from a 19" 1600 x 900. I know what you mean.

Worst about that joke is that it can't end well in any situation. >_>

Still trying to figure out that cable's name. I think it's DVI to VGA, using my now spare monitor for my Xbox. I can't imagine what my new monitor would look like with my Xbox. Drools.

Cheers!

I have a question. I just received my new 8 gigs of ram that was going to be for my full upgrade. I currently only have 2 gigs (yea yea) and was contemplating using one of the sticks in my current build to bump me up to 4 gigs. Do you recommend just waiting until I upgrade all together or would it be fine to use one of the sticks now?

so i build my computer and its amazing!!! omg wtf have i been missing for so long! OMG!

anyways another question is coming your way, i know this has been asked before but i cannot find it in this thread but how hot can my gtx580 be before it shuts down?...when i was playing battlefield 3 beta it would hit like around 80 is that too much? same question goes for my cpu it stays around 35 but im not sure if thats good or not

im sorry but im going to quote myself again because its really hot today and i notice my cpu is getting hotter...i really dont know what my average temps are suppose to be, thanks alot in advance PC GAF im in love with my pc its amazing... again thanks to hazaro and anyone else im forgetting

for anyone here looking about building a new PC for the first time and thinking "fuck this shit!"
it really wasnt that hard and i know absolutely nothing about computers.

My rig has been running strong for about a week now after I got the confirmation that Corsair would just ship me a replacement front fascia, which arrived today.

Carbide 400R made for a super easy build but I couldn't run the wires like I would prefer due to the shortish cables on my HX 520. Still temps are very cool on my i5 2500k with the CM 212+

Well, I'm doing ok now, got mobo in. I have a question about the Sata cables coming from my case. I have a CM 690 II advanced. It has one SATA for the HD dock on top and the eSata cable.

Also, should I plug eSata in the 6gb/s port or the Sata 2.0? Which ports should I use for what?

Edit: Nvm, figured out which cable is which. Now I just need to know which plugs to use.

Anyone have any experience with Cat6 from amazon under the "riteAV" name - the review seems decent enough. Looking to get 100ft and patch my pc to the router and get off the wireless signal finally.

I am looking at either these or these from mono price - both are the same length.

Thanks for any advice.

I read the first post about RAM so I'm not sure if it would make a big deal to change it, but can anyone tell me if a RAM upgrade would be worth it to me based on this scan?

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=7284F66831D926C3

RAM is one area where I'm definitely clueless at and I've had some minor problems booting the PC up with some error about memory, but I also noticed it was running at like 400MHz or something so I wasn't sure if it's slow enough to make any difference performance wise. All my receipt from when I got the PC said was "1GB DDR2 PC6400".

I'm a little lost so any help is appreciated. And if I do need a temporary upgrade, I need to find cheap RAM to replace it. Judging by some of the booting problems in the past, it might be worth it.

I have never built a computer before but decided to make one based on the intermediate wishlist in the OP. Unfortunately, I think I may have screwed up. I got an i5 processor with an i7 motherboard. Are they incompatible? I certainly hope not, as I ordered them off Amazon and it would be rather difficult to exchange since both are already open. The pins don't seem to match up either.

Assuming they're from the same "i" generation of Intel processors, they are compatible.

Well, I finally got everything together. Pushed the button and no smoke or flames. I just got through the bios and I'm installing all my updates, driver etc. Maybe tomorrow I'll post some pics and run a few tests to see where I'm at.

Thanks for everyone's help throughout the process. Certainly made it a little less stressful throughout.

To be fair, those setups are using sub-zero cooling. ;P
