I need a good video player for my computer. I've got Media Player Classic, WMP, Real player, quicktime, etc... and I just downloaded a video file of south park from a couple weeks ago, and none of these will play it. Media Player Classic says I need to download a codec, but everytime I go they want me to download entire programs.

Any quick solution? It's filename is supposedly an .avi but when MPC went to get a codec it said it was looking for mpeg-4 player.

Any ideas you guys have would be much appreciated.

yeah, but then the readme is saying that I now have to download another program and only certain parts of it... so that it can run Linux files.

*in towelie voice* i have no idea whats goin on

it's got me downloading cygwin just to open up the codec, and cygwin was like an hour download or so...

i'm wondering if this is worth it anymore.

You don't need to compile FFDShow to get it to work. You just need to download it from somewhere with a binary, rather than the SourceForge site where the source is hosted.

So they do. I use the excellent DefilerPak for my copy of ffdshow. In this case though, this guy decided to download the source.

Whichever Xvid codec I'm using covers all MPEG4 files for me.. no problems. I just use WMP Classic (VLC Player on occasion).

which is why some people should need to take a competency exam before using a computer

DivX works for most, VLC Player works for pretty much all. DivX is slightly more user friendly for my use, but sometimes they just don't play so I have to use VLC.
