I offered a bum food.

I was getting some breakfast before work this morning. There was a bum outside when I was walking in, I was feeling charitable so I got an extra donut. So when I walked out he asked me if i had change and I said no, (I used a debit card) but you can have a donut.

He looked at me like I was crazy and told me he "didn't want that shit"

So I said "fuck you then" and walked to my car and he said some shit to me I couldn't understand.

:lol

Not exactly what I had expected, but at least you can sleep better knowing that you're a far better person than that Favre asshole in that other thread.

I really did want the doughnut though. You were supposed to be kind and say something like, "Oh, I insist," or something nice like that. What you heard while you were walking away was me calling your mother a whore.

Don't mess with bums, offer them variety and never insult them in urban areas where they at times will gang up on you. I appreciate the gesture but offering a donut to a bum whom didn't choose, you don't expect us to believe you're that naive do ya? Never give bums money unless you purposely want to support their drinking habits.

All bums I've encountered (a lot) ask for change. Never for food. Sometimes they give explanations, too. One had to get to a battered womens shelter. One needed a room for the night. Most of them just need bus fare. I don't know. Some just ask for cigarettes.

Best bum gaf thread: The one where someone offered the bum some pennies. Hilarity ensued.

If you'd offered him McDonald's, he would've beaten you ragged. Consider yourself fortunate.

I remember about 4 years ago a friend and i got pizza, carried what we didn't finish with us. We ran across a homeless person who asked if we had cash, we didn't but gave him the pizza. 20 minutes later we were walking back around and he asked us again if we had cash, except.

Yeah, it seems like they don't care too much about getting food, but just money. It's pretty much why I don't give them money anymore.

Dude there was a couple in Chicago that got there heads beat in talkin crazy to a male and female homeless couple. Id advise you to just steer clear of letting people get under your skin so quickly. The proper response would have been to promptly put the doughnut in your mouth and walk away. His loss your extra calories.

I lol'ed at the "I did want that shit" comment

Don't bums get fed in homeless shelters? Somebody told me they ask for change so they can buy booze.
Yep. I have never seen an emaciated homeless person. In fact, most of them look better fed than I did in college.

You would have figured all you NeoGafers would have heeded my warning after my legendary run in with a homeless man all those years ago

How'd you get pushed into the bush again?

Why do you people try to continue aiding these hopeless unfortunates? They’re borderline criminals and animals, IMO. Years of disappointment, neglect, ridicule, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and whatever else they indulge in under my tax-paying bridges at night have served to deteriorate them to the level of dumb beasts. Fuck 'em and that Will Smith movie.

Everyone knows wtf they do with the money.

should've gave him a free piece of grilled chicken from KFC thus you won't spend cash on an ungrateful walking shit.

Ya those fucking bastards steal clothes I hear.

I had a friend who offered a hobo a mason jar full of pennies that he had in his car. There was probably $15-$20 in there that he had been slowing adding to for years...

The hobo smashed it on the ground with a seriously pissed off look on his face. :lol

I lived in detroit for a few years and would talk with the bums outside my apartment sometimes. They make plenty of cash doing what they do (panhandling, collecting bottles and cans). Usually around 200-300 a week. With free food at the shelter to boot. One guy said he made enough to get a place to live and helped support his ex gf and kid. He chose to squat in some abandoned building though. He said he did it because he was happy with it and didn't want to do anything else. That was the general sentiment amongst the ones I talked to.

edit: I shouldn't say plenty because that's subjective. It was just more than I thought it would be. Also, I should also mention that there were some who tried getting a job but others would ruin it for them by actually landing a job and fucking it up for them by being a shit head at work so few people wanted to hire them. But most were pretty satisfied with what they were doing.

Christ, what a bunch of raging assholes we have here.

You should use this experience to affect your judgment of homeless people everywhere. If you are an asshole, that is.

before Coinstar, homeless people really couldn't do anything with that many pennies, banks would not convert loss change for a non-account holder, let alone a homeless man. Stores wouldn't put up with a homeless man trying to pay with pennies.

I don't know, a lot of people seem to get pissed at homeless people rather easily. I don't get it. Most people think of them as human garbage, and most homeless people sense that rather easily. As it is, I come home from work and all I want is a beer, if I was homeless, I'd probably curse out someone like Deling too. I mean, a donut? Talk about a waste of calories.

We had a lady near where I live who was 'found out' by the local media. She lived in a pretty nice apartment and had a lot of nice stuff in it, but she didn't work. She combined government assistance with panhandling and made an estimated 2k+ a month. Bitch.

But the reality of the matter is not EVERY single homeless person is going to be a drunk jerk, there are the genuine ones down on their luck. Once you become to 'set in your ways' about your perception of the homeless, well then you might miss out the chance to help someone who could really use it.

I can relate.

Had a similar experience last year walking back from lunch with half of a grilled steak sandwich.

Hobo asked for change; I offered him food. He looked at me like I was from Mars.

Just ask for some Mad Dog and maybe I'll buy it for your shit stinking ass. :|

There are plenty of folks homeless thanks to misfortune and the economy, but aggressive panhandlers can go fuck themselves. And bluntly speaking, if we were to use semantics properly and statistically, we wouldn't say "homeless," we'd say "substance abusers."

And many homeless shelters provide food and the ones that don't partner with other organizations to feed their clients.

Giving money to panhandlers is a terribly false economy. better to donate money or time to organizations that help the genuinely homeless.
