I play Capcom Fighting Evolution...

Same here. I *LIKE* CFE, but I find myself playing CvS2 all of a sudden after having not touched it for almost a year.

Also been playing Vampire Savior to get ready for the PSP. :)

It was the beginning of the end when Street Fighter Championship edition worked, and then Hyper SF II also worked.

I mean, I guess it's not completely dead... since we have Guilty Gear and hi-res KoF and all...

but, still, the genre seems to have diminished.

Capcom hasn't even tried to do anything completely new since 1997. Maybe if they'd do something besides "dream matches" with recycled sprites and tired gameplay it'd be a success.

This year we got/are getting:

Vampire Chronicle Chaos Tower
Samurai Spirits 5 PS2
KOF 2003 PS2
SvC Chaos XBox
KOF Maximum Impact
KOF Neowave
KOF '94 Rebout
Capcom Fighting Evolution
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
DOA Ultimate
Mortal Kombat Deception
Guilty Gear Isuka
Guilty Gear XX #Reload PC/Xbox
Samurai Shodown 5 Special
The Rumblefish
Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 3
Naruto Narutimett Hero 2
DBZ Budokai 3
DBZ Super Sonic Warriors
Virtua Fighter 4 Final Tuned
Tekken 5

And I'm sure I missed some games. It's far from dying. On the 2D front, it's only Capcom that has dropped the ball, and SNK appears to have grabbed it and is running with it. Neo-Geo Battle Colluseum is looking awesome.

However, I'm tired of these Series Vs. Series games. I WANT A BRAND NEW 2D FIGHTING GAME from Capcom or SNK.

I'm also tired of constant ports of older games to newer systems and remakes of older fighting games.

This year we got/are getting:

Vampire Chronicle Chaos Tower -PORT
Samurai Spirits 5 PS2 -PORT
KOF 2003 PS2 -PORT
SvC Chaos XBox -PORT
KOF Maximum Impact -3d fighter
KOF Neowave -Slight upgrade
KOF '94 Rebout -PORT
Capcom Fighting Evolution -New fighter
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection -PORT
DOA Ultimate -PORT
Mortal Kombat Deception -new fighter though 3d
Guilty Gear Isuka - Slight upgrade
Guilty Gear XX #Reload PC/Xbox -PORT
Samurai Shodown 5 Special -Slight upgrade
The Rumblefish -New fighter
Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 3 - new fighter though 3d
Naruto Narutimett Hero 2 -3d kinda fighter but not really
DBZ Budokai 3 -dont know
DBZ Super Sonic Warriors -dont know
Virtua Fighter 4 Final Tuned -Slight upgrade
Tekken 5 -New fighter though 3d
I count anything without new frames/characters/moves as just a slight CE type upgrade that doesn't really do anything for the genre.

So in terms of 2d fighters we got 2 games this year: Rumblefish (not a great game) and CFE (not a great game). I'd say the 2d fighting genre is not recovering from it's death a few years ago. Releasing port after port after port after slight upgrade after port is NOT HELPING :(

Like you said, Battle Collesium is looking quite good for next year, so that's a start. It would be nice if we could get something NEW and 2d from Capcom's side also in 2005.

How did the fighter genre die?
It's easy.
There is anything worth a pen. Anything. (2D)

I have been playing Street Fighter III (NG/2I/3S) and Zero 2/3 for more than 5 years old !!!! There is no fucking game that can make me addicted to its mechanics nor it interests me for more than 5 minutes.

Capcom efforts:

CvS -> bought DC one and thought it was great...for 5 minutes.
CvS 2 -> bought DC one...thought it was great for a week...then I returned to 2I. Later it was released for the GC and I paid 65€ for it...I am an idiot.

Hyper Street Fighter 2 -> Been all the summer playing it. Awesome. Then you realize it's nothing but a port...Clink ! Has Capcom lose its touch ?...

SF III DI -> Simply awesome. The only game that got me away from the Zero series. It introduced me to the III series and made me love it while disliking 3S.

SF III 3rd Strike -> Bought the DC one and thouight it was great but I prefered DI...There were a lot of factors I didn't like. One of the them was the strange fact I couldn't make enough parryings...Later I imported the PS2 one (no PAL release) and I have been playing it since the end of summer. Now the DC rests in peace after 4 years of continuous use (DI/Zero3).

All the other efforts don't even deserve mention...

Considering this, the fact that SNK doesn't pull a decent KOF since Kof 99 and that all the other series have sucked ass since MOTW, the fact that Guility Gear series are nice but boring then you have a genre that doesn't offer anything.

I have realized that I won't see that quality from the 90s in fighting games. Certainly Akiman is still alive, so is Okamoto or Funamizu...x68k Kondo is also alive...but Capcom refuses to join them again in ar room to produce something good (even though most of them are away from Capcom).
Now we can only get happy about ports of games that weren't released such as Red Earth...for instance...Or the new re-made KOFs (can't wait for the 96 remake :) ).
It's a dead genre ? Probably...but not for me who will continue playing them for years since there is not another genre that makes me enjoy multiplayer.

Not a decent KOF since '99? You're crazy. INSANE. KOF 2002 and 2003 kill '99-2001 combined. :P

That's just my opinion...I feel them empty, without any kind of grace...The last one I enjoyed was 99. Even with abusive strikers ! (althought I don't use them much...) Characters, music, stages...very good game.
