I rocked out so hard I DESTROYED EVERYTHING.

So I'm owning hard mode on Guitar Hero, sliding up and down the neck like nobody's business and I get a solid 3 star ranking on Frankenstien. Thinkin' I'm a pretty big badass, and not worrying at all about the possibility that my PS2 may be currently scratching the fuck out of my Guitar Hero disc, I load up Cowboys From Hell.

But the loading screen never comes...

I reset, still assured that I rock hard, and, again, load up Cowboys From Hell.

But it just sits there. Black screen.

So I think to myself- Oh shit, maybe I rocked out so hard that my PS2 scratched the disc! So of course I eject the disc and inspect it, and oddly enough, there's a wierd black gash (laser burn?) on the most important looking part of the data (the part with Cowboys From Hell).

I tried to play another song, but nope, it looks like the gash affects all the songs.

So now I get to rock out with both my Guitar Hero controllers, but with no Guitar Hero.

So now, I ask three questions-

1. Is the Guitar Hero game available to buy alone? Without a Guitar controller?
2. Is there a way to check to see if the PS2 is the culprit? It must be, but, will it be a repeated offender? I don't want to have to dump his ass and get another PS2...
3. Are PS2 slims any good, and do any of you analysts think there'll be a price drop in the near future?

What you need is:

Less Pete Townsend:

More Dave Gilmour:

It'd be great if instead of jumping he was actually running incredibly fast whilst playing the guitar... I sense a new Olympic sport.

Not sure about #2, but yes, you can buy Guitar Hero without the guitar, and yes, slimline PS2s are wonderful--they work, which is more than I can say for my launch PS2 (I 'fixed' it, now it'll run games, but only after I manually adjust the laser). :lol

Slimline PS2s really are great. Their small size makes taking Guitar Hero on the road that much easier.

Also, is it an actual "chunk taken out of the disc" gash or just a "smear of goo that's blocking the laser from reading the disc" thing? If it's just a black smudge (and I know this may sound obvious but you never know), have you tried to wipe it off? Or, assuming it's not too deep of a gash, you could always get the disc resurfaced at a local CD shop for $5 or so.

But if all else fails in attempting to replace or fix your copy of Guitar Hero, let me know. I have a spare copy lying around.

On the slimline PS2 I had a LOT of problems playing DVDs. Nearly everything I would put in it would skip, and apparently the problem isn't limited to me. I've talked to a few people with slimlines that said they had the same problem with DVD movies skipping. The games play perfectly, but the movies were pretty bad.

I know a lot of people have seperate DVD players for their movies (including me now), but I just thought I'd mention it in case you use your PS2 for movies as well.

Well, the truth comes out. My cousins were visiting me a couple days ago, and I learned through the grapevine that they had encountered this problem too. Knowing them... they didn't just encounter the problem, they are the cause of it.

After waking up, I inspected the disc again, and it is definitely not anything just on the surface. It's a little gash, but now that I'm looking at it in daylight, the gash seems to have been caused my melee damage, it doesn't really seem like laser burn (someone describe laser burn for me?). The PS2 has been fine all this time, and I'm willing to lose another game to see if it's the PS2 before I plunk down 150 dollars on a new one.

BuddyC, I'll see about resurfacing the disc, hadn't thought of that. Also, that you even mention your spare copy of Guitar Hero makes my heart swell at the kindness of humanity, but for now I'll see what else I can do. <3 <3 <3

Oh man, I shouldn't have used the term "loaded up". It implied custom music :(

BUT, even though this is the 30th Guitar Hero based thread, I still reccomend the game with passion. It's got 40ish songs and almost all of them are great to listen to and even more so to play.

Since playing Guitar Hero though, it makes me wish it had a way to put new custom made songs into it. It'd be great to play through some of my favorite albums, from start to finish. I can only hope that Harmonix hastily delivers a Vol. 2 or something like that. Also, that I can get my Guitar Hero working as well.

Sell the PS2 and GH controller and get yourself a 2nd hand guitar - OMG! Teh Realism (tm)

I remember rocking the house with the Sharp Dressed Man first solo, I was rocking too hard and guitar controller suddenly plugged out of the PS2 and when the message came up on the screen man every one of my mates were rolling on the floor :lol

Can we please have about 30 more GH threads? There haven't been nearly enough already.

I'm still waiting for the "GH is overrated thread"

Guitar Hero is definitely not overrated

We were rocking too hard to Guitar Hero. Someone was drunk and walked in front of the PS2, and her foot got caught on a cord. The PS2 fell on the floor, and the disc got scratched inside the PS2.

I've cleaned it, scrubbed it, stuck it in one of those 9.99 "cd cleaning kits". It works for a little while after every attempt, but inevitably some of the songs stop loading.

Where can you buy a non-guitar-ed copy?

Before you try resurfacing and all that, try boiling the disc. Often it works on scratched games... It's not just for demo discs anymore!

This method fixed a DVD that I had scratched to hell. I had put it in my computer's DVD drive, where it got stuck and I literally had to remove it with pliers! You cannot imagine how scratched it looked, but a half-minute boiling in water made it playable again.
