I think all pro-sports video games (FIFA, NBA, NFL, UFC, etc. except for racing games) are crap, regardless of the version.

And I can't comprehend why so many people buy and play these video game parodies when there are so many fun, unique, interesting, beautiful and overall great games out there.

All I can guess is maybe they fantasize about controlling or being in the shoes of their favorite teams and players? I figure, I would just go do it in real life if I want to play sports, but that's just me I suppose. They are probably sports fans in real life as well, so the games appeal to them the same way someone who loves cars or martial arts probably would enjoy racing and fighting games.

I think some players are infatuated with reality and some like fantasy and some like both. I prefer fantasy, but I can tolerate realism as long as it's fun. Yeah, sports games is the one genre I can't really get into. The wrestling games are fun though, but does that count?

The beauty of this medium is that people can have fun with anything and everything. The way I see these games are like tactics ones, as the player has to read the enemy and form strategies to overcome them. You thinking they're crap is just your opinion in the end of the day.

Some people want to play there favorite sport/team/player in video games. Some people find those games fun to play, I have somebody on my Switch friends list that puts in 1000+ hours into the NBA 2K game of the year every year they come out.

People have different tastes, I dont think it's that hard to understand...

Because playing those games is fun for those people, lol. People will play Fifa for example yet stay away from DIablo III because it's just a 'button masher'.

Fifa was okay 10 years ago (Fifa 10, 11, 12), now though it's a total mess & a very slow, sluggish game (thanks frostbite engine). So it's not the best example of a sports game. Back on the 360 & ps3 though it used to be quite a tactical experience & aimed for the "simulation" genre, whereas now it's arcade shit made for ultimate team. PES on the ps2 was "the" tactical sports game & very intense. Now though it's also gone downhill.

So sports games which were "treasures" are now total trash. So I meet the OP halfway & say yeah, there's a problem with people who blindly buy & play fifa games (for example) all year & never touch anything else. They're enablers of shit because the more shit sells, the less likely we'll ever get a decent fifa game again.

And I have the same opinion on JRPGs with inane stories, underdressed high school girls and manly boytoys with spiky haircuts. Different strokes for different folks!

Nothing wrong with those who enjoy playing them, myself enjoyed the early madden games on the N64 and PS1. While I don't really play these games nowadays, I have friends/relatives that do and it's always a blast as a couch multiplayer game with them.

No, your subjective opinions are wrong.

I think it's more about playing the game as a supporter. All these sports are controlled like you are viewing the sport on TV.

Soccer is a weird case because the act of playing soccer is completely unlike what you do in a game like fifa. It's actually more like playing a pseudo game where you interact with the broadcast of a match. The game that stranglely mimics the act of playing soccer is actually rocket league.

Somebody described Rocket League as you're playing as the foot in football, which i always thought was a perfect analogy

Fifa: It has its fair share of glitches in older versions, it does lack in new features in some version, and while I can praise it for being ported to the Switch, I see no point to do that for 22, as it's basically Switch 18 with updated rosters. Also, like many sports games, most of the soundtrack is bad. Plus, it gets a ton of complaints on it's career mode, and it being broken.

NBA: As a casual fan of Basketball, I'm not as interested in the series as the other games I am going to mention, but it has some cons. Unlike in other player career modes, the game forces you to Play games, instead of simulating all of them. (I get that it's made by 2K Sports so it does have differences to EA) The gameplay in the game is not up to scratch, one thing in the My Career mode is the stupid "Allow Man To Score" penalty. Sometimes, you have no choice but to get a grade penalty, whether it is via a contact penalty or allow man. However, I can cope with the Career mode in the game. It also has the best Switch port, far better and more updated than Fifa.

Madden: There are some major problems with the newer games, and while I have every game from 2003-21 (excluding Street) I don't enjoy them as much as I used to. In 21, the game is being slammed, and I think it's because of it getting hardly any new features. Career mode is similar to the one in last years game, and most of the features that are here was in last year. Ultimate team's main page looks like a mess compared to 19's, but credit for them taking away the contracts for players in the game. The music is bad, and IMO, is worser than Fifa. The redeeming qualities is the extensive story modes, but they don't come close to beating NCAA football. And, this game's lack of features can partly be blamed on them making the game possible on newer gens, not because they didn't bothered.

NHL: I've played NHL on and off the last few years, and like the rest, I have problems. The gameplay is poor. You have to make sure you are not pressing any buttons on hybrid controls to switch players. In earlier games, you could press a button and swap players as well. Heck, even I think 2K's gameplay is better than 21. Again, this edition suffers from lack of new features. I don't have a lot of problems on this, as I have might have on Madden, and there are a fair few pros here. You have an expansion draft, which none of the others have. The Soundtrack is not the best, but it's better than Madden and Fifa. The menu navigation is better than madden as well.

Because people like sports and love to see and play as their idols on their console. It's not complicated.

Oh, you can play with Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in real life? Man, care to invite me to the next match?

I feel the same way about people who buy Battlefield, Call of Duty or Assassins Creed games.

I have a friend that only plays Fifa. When I was younger most of my friends played only Winning Eleven. Some people just love sports games.

You are completely wrong. MLb the Show is one of the best, most accurate sports simulations you can every play. I also enjoy Madden, have for many, many years. It has some shortcomings, and needs improvement in some areas for sure, but it's not nearly as bad as internet trolls make it out to be.

Sport games need arcade and story modes to work (SSX, NBA The Inside etc) otherwise they struggle connecting with the masses.

I don't think you have any idea how many millions of copies the yearly FIFA, Madden, NBA, etc sell each year. Fans of sports games don't like arcadey versions of it, while non sports games don't care to buy them either with dedication to the franchise, that's why they disappeared.

I play sports games from time to time and while they are very different from their real life counterparts, they both do involve strategy which some or many find intriguing.

I liked MLB The Show even though I know nothing about baseball.

I get Fifa every now and then and I'm always surprised how little they change but when Ultimate Team stuff made EA $1.49 billion this year what incentive do they have to re-invent the wheel.

Well, to be fair I have the same with first person shooters. Why not just join the army if you wanna shoot stuff?

But yeah, different people, different tastes and all that. I just happen to dislike two of the most populair genres in gaming of the past 2 decades :P

You sound like the person who says "why do people play video games when are so many other things to do in life that are more interesting. " Stop being so judgemental and enjoy what you like without worrying about what someone else likes.

Yeah I'm one of those people who watch and follow sports, but pretty much hate all sports games. I prefer arcade style sports games like NBA Jam.

I just can't be bothered with any game or series that pumps out a new "latest and greatest" version each year . Shit like Call of Duty and Madden and NBA, it's all shovelware rubbish to me (the Switch and Vita versions with updated rosters but being the exact same as previous years versions) . And I do like watching sports also . But they obviously sell and people do enjoy them , so they have a place I guess. But they are not for me.

I am a huge sports fan and I used to love sports games, especially Madden, as the NFL is my favorite sport.

But - EA getting the exclusive license for Madden really killed the incentive system for innovation. Now the huge emphasis on MUT and microtransactions have made Madden unbearable. I love football so much that I buy Madden every two years (most recently 2016, 2018, 2020) and hope for something that will bring back the magic, but it is just not worth playing.

I certainly would not buy the new iterations every year like so many people do but just as any other video game genre, they can be enjoyable.

Same shit every year bro, I prefer them to make it 2 year game period with updated kits roster etc, I'm one of those donkeys that buy fifa every year

With the exception of Madden, which is just based off a uniquely videogame adaptable sport, and the fun you can have with friends playing fifa on one console (which doesn't necessarily require the latest version) i agree.

Out of curiosity, are you a sports fan at all?

I do think they have become a bit same-y one year to the next, and could probably just be released as roster updates, rather than full-priced new titles.

Few games have made me as involved and excited as FIFA's Alex Hunter campaign. Getting a score tied to your performance and making sure you do well so you can get into the starting eleven in the next match makes every play count. I wish that mode was extended somehow. Too bad they fucked it up with the FIFA Street BS.

FIFA with friends can also be pretty fun. It's a game that most can understand pretty quickly even if they don't play a lot of games very often.

Also every game could be reduced to repetitive if you think about it hard enough. Few games bring real innovation to the table. Take fighting games for example (I'm a huge fan), you could say that most of them are just skin swaps and slightly tweaked rules. Still, they can be exhilarating.

All in all, just play what you want, OP. Not every game has to have universal appeal.

I think FIFA plays well. But madden is garbage. It plays so stiff and feels terrible.
I prefer the ncaa football games.
