NBA 2K and MLB The Show series are well made and play like a dream. I wouldn't buy them every year, but the base gameplay is fun.
I think all pro-sports video games (FIFA, NBA, NFL, UFC, etc. except for racing games) are crap, regardless of the version.

as someone that likes sports...and has played sports games my whole life. I will say the main sports games (bball/football/baseball) are not as good as they were back in the day. I feel like sports games got worse since PS2 gen.
Madden 07 & MVP Baseball 2005 are good videogames. Not just sports games.

I got off the major sports bandwagon when it became less about on the field improvements and more about off the field activities.
The RPG-fication of sports games are absurd as well. I have a less than zero percent interest in watching a poorly made create a player artificially struggle through scripted events participate in cutscenes talking about who gets to start for their fictional college or high school team before they hit the big leagues. Nor do I particularly care about my player's shoes or haircut.
It's also somewhat ridiculous to me that sweat seems to come back every other generation as a next gen selling point, though I'd find it hilarious if "real time ray traced sweat" somehow became a measuring stick as to which is the better next gen basketball game instead of actual on court gameplay comparisons.
