If civilization collapses, I just don't know why there would be people trading in flakes of gold anyway.

So the idea is that some farmer will let groups of people come onto his property, shop for food items, and pay with little shreds of gold flakes? Civilization has collapsed. Anyone who has a survival source doesn't give a fuck about your shiny metal flakes.
