I was *this* close to preordering 3 360 wired controllers...

...until GameCrazy reminded me that there are only two controller ports on the 360. What's the deal with this? If you want to have 4-player gaming at home, at least two of your controllers have to be wireless? That really pisses me off. It's not too often that I get 4-player matches going, but I do often enough that I would want four controllers. However, it's rare enough that I don't want to have to pay the extra for wireless controllers either.

Is there any word on if Microsoft will release any sort of USB hub and downloadable upgrade to support up to four wired controllers? I would hope they would consider that. It's ridiculous that they're dropping from four controller ports to two.

Are you sure GameCrazy is right? I was under the impression there were 2 USB slots in the front and an additional 4 in the back of the console. You should be able to plug in 4 wired controllers without a problem.

I questioned it too, but he showed me in the OXM 360 Launch Guide where it confirms that only two wired controllers at a time are supported.

Oh... well... that is quite the conundrum then. It's pretty odd that MS would drop back down to 2 ports considering the emphasis they put on multiplayer gaming.

I'm surprised you and I are the only people who seemed to notice this. Tell you what, I'll try to find out if a normal USB hub will work - hopefully we're not venturing into "M-branded multitap" territory.

Oh yeah, there is actually a third USB port on the back that is intended to be used for you to plug an mp3 player into, but you can probably plug a controller into it and it should work, so you should be able to use three wired controllers with no hub, as long as you weren't planning on plugging your iPod in at the same time...

Haleon: Like I said - two ports on the front, one on the back (next to the ethernet port)...the console with the gratuitous overabundance of ports is the PS3, not the X360 :p

I don't think you can plug a controller into the rear. It seems like it *SHOULD* work considering it's just a USB port, but OXM stated that only 2 wired controllers would be recognized. With three I'd be content though, even though someone would be shafted a couple of feet on cord length.
 
From IGN

The round port on the right side of the system is a door that unveils two USB ports. These can be used to connect to cameras to transfer photos, MP3 players to stream music, and many other peripherals. There is also a USB port in the rear of the system which is a prime place to attach the camera.
 
How many games out there actually offer 4 players simultaneous play on the XBox?

I don't think its that big a deal... although I do miss the 4 player split screen play of Perfect dark & Goldeneye.
 
Are you serious? Most people who want to play 4 player games would welcome the lack of cords as they're annoying. Your issues with wired controllers are insignificant and no one cares crybaby.

Honestly, I love to play with my buddies on the same XBOX, but I'm starting to see this trend where there will be very few games that take advantage of same console multiplayer. there's such a large emphasis being put on XBL that certain co-op and versus games are only being offered online and no splitscreen.

I don't think it's a step back as you can still have 4 players at once. It's just an inconvenience for those that want more than 2 wired controllers instead of wireless ones.
 
Wired controllers are cheaper, and if you're gonna spend most of your time playing 2 player games with an occasional third or fourth player, I can understand not wanting to pony up for $50 controllers when $40 or less (3rd parties only make wired, not wireless controllers) will do...

So on the bright side, if the original poster is getting a premium pack, one wireless controller is included in the package, so you could buy two wired controllers and you should be in good shape. However...what happens if you buy a play and charge kit and are forced to charge the wireless controller from the rear USB port when the battery goes dead? Assuming that the console will only recognize two wired controllers (which, to be fair, we don't know if that's true yet), would the wireless controller being charged be rejected as a wired controller, or would it work as a wireless controller, but just drawing juice from the console?

Actually, I won my 360 from Pepsi, but if you check the 360 threads, I've been one of the most excited GAF members leading up to launch.

Doesn't the Wireless Adapter also use this USB port? Hopefully USB hubs will work ok.

How can you understand the price to begin with of EITHER?
 
I'm a little bummed by this news, as 4 player multiplayer is pretty integral to 90% of the positive consoling memories i have from the last generation... and not online play.

So to make it so expensive to get 4 people playing really doesn't make sense... at the very least, why wouldn't they support a generic USB hub?

The fact the wired controllers are normal USB connectors at all just reeks of afterthought to me. And the wireless are pretty expensive... I wonder if fewer games will be supporting 4 player, single box?

Kind of a bummer of a realization.

Hey, I'm with you - the accessories are totally raping the consumer...

You know, if they really did restrict the console to two wired controllers...the more I think that that would be the real reason why they are not letting 3rd parties make wireless controllers. If you want four player play, two of your controllers MUST come from Microsoft...

On the bright side, you can think about it this way - the money you would have spent on a multitap was spent on the wireless transceivers in the two wireless controllers you had to buy instead of wired ones :) And you get wireless freedom to boot! (Too bad you still have to buy batteries, though.)
 
Wired controllers are dead.. get with the times. ;)

After next-gen they probably won't even be offered anymore.
 
It's only freakin $10 more a controller. People should not be able to whine about that. Don't drink two beers one weekend and you can now afford that wireless controller. Stay away from McDonalds for a day. Don't go see a movie.

In this day in age $10 is freakin nothing. Nothing at all. I'm sure you waste $10 a week on crap anyways. Get yourself a wireless controller and enjoy what wireless offers.

Just remembered I have a Xbox USB controller adapter. Am I correct in assuming that'll work on my 360 or am I gonna have to pony up more dough for a controller?

You are gonna have to pony up more dough for a controller (only officially licensed peripherals are gonna be recognized, they have a security scheme to keep unlicensed stuff out)...:(

Yeah, that's what I'm going to end up doing. I'll just cut out a movie with the wife one weekend or something. I'm kinda tight budgeted right now (full-time student, mortgage, car payments, insurance, etc.), so I'm just trying to save a few bucks here and there when I can.

-The Ps3 has no wired controllers at all.
-One of the main reasons for the 360's front usb ports is to be able to charge the controllers while playing. Early 360 prototypes still had 4 front wired controller ports, but that was obviously scrapped. 4 player with wired controllers is no longer important.

Starting from the N64 I only bought 2 controllers (+ one came with the system) anyone else that feels the need to play either ponies up the $ for another, or brings their own. Worked quite well. ;)
 
Are the wirless controllers rechargable or do they need batteries?

If they can be recharged is it included when you buy it or the $400 box?

Umm...no? It uses Bluetooth to connect its wireless controllers.

They need batteries, out of the box. If you want to make them rechargeable, you need to buy the $20 "play and charge kit" (rechargeable battery + usb charging cable to plug into the Xbox), or a $12 battery (if you only buy the battery, you have no way to charge it - they sell it separately if you have two wireless controllers, but only feel you need one charging cable to charge both)

Edit: I'm sure the controller will come with a set of AA batteries, it would be incredibly stupid and frustrating for MS to fail to include them...

The wireless controller which is sold seperately and comes in the Xbox 360 premium package has AA batteries with it. The charger is not included in the Premium package or with the controller. You need to buy a seperate Play and Charge kit for 20 bucks which comes with a rechargable battery and a charger which hooks up to your tree sitty usb 2.0 port. That way you can charge your battery and play at the same time. Amazatron!

You either go the battery route, or buy the "Play & Charge" kit which comes with a rechargeable battery pack and the adapter which you plug into the front of the system so you can charge it while you play or whatever.
 
yeah i complained about the 2 front USB thing early on...

but it's been months since E3 and i've decided to just get anal raped by MS and buy a wireless pad, 2 wired pads and 2 p&c kits...

i mean, i'm getting the console for free, so hey, at least i'm only $170 in the hole on controllers...

i remember the days when you could get 3 controllers for under $100

it's fucked up how the wired pads are $40 and don't even have analog buttons like the xbox controller...

that ring of light sure must cost a pretty penny (sic)
 
Just buy a USB hub and plug it into one of the USB ports, done. That's how we play 4-player splitscreen MP in CoD2.

Anyone know if there were any Xbox 1 games that used the analog face buttons (and required you to use them, I remember DOA3 had an option you could turn on, but it sucked)...maybe the MGS2 Substance port?

Seems like it might be a small backwards compatibility glitch, now that I think about it.

PS3 uses a better system for wireless controllers. I think upto 7 controllers can connect at a time? Even the PC can use bluetooth for a ton of other wireless applications.
