I went to the gym yesterday after a long hiatus, now I'm scared.

Ok, here's the gist of it. As of yesterday I hadn't gone to the gym in probably 8 months, maybe more. So I got all my workout shit together yesterday afternoon and took a trip down to my on campus Gym. Worked out for a bit, but since I didn't have a locker I decided to leave after 30mins. I basically concentrated on my biceps and the chest. Well, today my muscles are so sore...they've never been this sore ever. Flexing doesn't hurt, but outsretching my arm makes my biceps kill like a mofo, even sticking out my chest makes it hurt a tad bit. I'm scared that I might have seriously damaged my muscles, as I know a bit of soreness is normal, but this amount of pain is just not natural.

I hope so, cause I remember the first time I ever worked out. The next day I was sore, but it wasn't nearly this bad. I thought maybe I pushed myself to hard after such a long break.

I've done the same with just free weights, my arms were sore for about a week, like supersore. Don't worry about it, just take it easy until you feel better.

Were you benching way more than normal, or anything like that? You know you gotta ease back into that kind of thing.

I don't lift weights, but I've started running again recently, so I'm familiar with the pain. Take it slow. I didn't stretch the first time back, so my legs were really talking to me afterwards, but it got better. You might want to wait a few days before you go back.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Eh, that kind of thing has happened to me before, after both working out and running, and I'm still fine.

yeah if I go back after a long break, it's not the next day but the day after that hurts like a bitch. just keep stretching.

Few words of advice. When leg day comes around, take it easy on the squats for a few weeks. If you go straight into doing tons of squats, you'll feel like a grandpa for the next week.

"Were you benching way more than normal, or anything like that?"

Not really, but I was pushing the limits of my muscle endurance. That wasn't a smart move, not after 8 months of no weight training.

"You might want to wait a few days before you go back."

Haha, way ahead of you. I was thinking about going today...I got up in the morning, barely able to move my arms around. First thing that went through my head was, "Welp, guess so gym for a week :p".

So it's safe to keep stretching like this? I was worried that I was causing more damage. Will it help the pain subside faster?

I find gentle stretches help me anyway. but I'm no doctor.... you just really overworked your muscles, they will heal.

It's all good. If you really want to get rid of the kinks, have some sweaty post-workout sex with the missus and post on GAF about it before and afterwards.

This advice shall be the catalyst for me to go out and get GF. For the health of the OT forum, wish me luck.

1. Stretching has been proven to be very ineffective. Unless you are gymnast-flexible it is almost useless for weighttraning. It is pretty much only used because personal trainers are paid by the hour. Try lifting smaller weights or resistance to start/end.

2. You are getting old. Past 25 it is all downhill.

3. You don't know how to work out properly. God, chest and biceps on the same day. That's like eating and shitting off the same plate. Get a personal trainer FFS.

4. Stop giving advice if you have no clue what you are talking about. The gaming forum is waiting for people like you.

No I'm not, I'm 21. The problem is that in the past I've been in TERRIBLE shape, basically all bones with a layer of skin (think of Alpha before, but worse...not so bad now though). I'm trying to rectify that, but it ain't easy when you're a weak mofo (though even adding a bit of muscle mass on my skinny frame is very noticable, which is a plus).

IAWPT. But a personal trainer is too expensive, I'm just going to ask some people at the gym for some tips.

Exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks back, my arm would hurt whenever I outstretched it, at the end of the day it wouldnt hurt as much, but in the morning OW!

I went to the doctor and he told me to ICE it and let it rest.

hahaha, i do that everytime i quit working out for a stretch and then rush to get back into it. after a long stretch i won't bench anything more than a light 135 for a week, just to get my chest back into the idea of having to lift. Same with biceps... nothing more than 25lb dumbbells.

why is chest and biceps on the same day so horrible?

you want to work complimentary muscles so you, ideally, don't lose balance. You want to do biceps with triceps, chest with back and shoulders.

Thanks for the tip. Any more weight training tips is welcome

No problem. Yeah... you see the guys walking around with their arms out to their sides, always half bent? It's cuz they didn't balance and did more bicep work than tricep work... triceps aren't strong enough to naturally straighten out the arm so the bicep curls it in.

personal opinion... the best overall lift out there is probably the powerclean. It hits soooo many muscles, I just feel awesome after I do them.

i've got a ton of tips if you want them. all your sets, finish out with a few negatives. Always go to the point of exhaustion on your set, at least your last one, and then do negatives (try to hold the weight in the 'finish' position and let it work naturally against your muscles). this will toast your muscles. :)

Thanks, I haven't been giving my triceps much thought...I'll make sure to change that next time I'm at the gym. Didn't know about negatives, makes sense...I'll definitely give that a try.

I can confirm that it works EVERYTIME.

Seriously, it's just some shock to your muscles, this is normal.

Don't forget the before and during sex pictures too, to chart your progress.

PC, I think you may have actually over done it. I have experienced pain like that but not as extreme as you have described. I wish you well in whatever afterlife you believe in. :/

By doing chest and bicep, you'll overtrain because you are working them many times a week.

As for muscle soreness, its one of the best things the next day is waking up feeling sore. Especially a day of heavy squats. Feeling like you can't walk is a great feeling.

Make sure you get plenty of protein and rest. It can make all the difference in recovery time.

Sounds natural to me.

My soccer club won the Division Cup over a week ago and so we were given the week off. Last night we got together again to train for the upcoming provincials. Even though it had just been 10 days since we last played, it was exhausting. And today I'm walking like a cripple. It's amazing how quickly you can fall out of shape. Eight months? I can't imagine. You should return to the gym as soon as you think you can handle it, but definitely give yourself a few days of rest [plus some mild stretching to keep active].

That's the plan. Hopefully it's sooner than later.
