GTA games like to give you bitch missions at the start to contrast with the epic crime lord you become at the end.

Meanwhile here's me doing the Ambulance and Pizza Boy missions in Vice City every single year because I want the infinite sprint and extra health and I genuinely have fun doing those kinds of missions.

The difference is those are optional vs "mandatory" in the main story.
Like I enjoy running 5 miles, but I wouldn't like it as much if someone told me I had to.

I always really like the early GTA missions. Usually lots of good characters and scene setting. 5 has some great ones. Pulling down the house the tennis coach is hiding in for example.

I wouldn't call it fun there, either, but I feel like it really works in KCD 2's context and favor. Slower-paced and more effortful of a game than GTA.

GTA V is terrible in this regard because it's 100% a humiliation ritual. Franklin and especially Michael have a ridiculous amount of humiliating missions where you just get punked and treated like shit for literally no reason. I replayed GTA V not too long ago and it is insane how many "Huuuu we fucking hate you Michael, you're a fucking loser Michael, you are the worst dad ever Michael, how can you call yourself a man Michael" missions there are. There's no payoff to any of these missions, you get treated like shit, when the mission is over your family scolds you and you sulk in your misery.

Congrats, that felt terrible and I feel bad. Wow can't wait to play another mission.
A start contrast with GTA IV where it's actually incredibly well done because it slowly nudges Niko back into a life of crime even though he desperately wants to escape it.

Well said. Michael and his family are terrible people who deserve each other, which is also the same conclusion they themselves come to, and is the supposed "payoff" of their arc, IIRC.

Only the first Tonya mission is mandatory, the rest of them can be ignored if you want.
Vice City and every other GTA game since 3 at least have mandatory missions like that.
Like you said, effective story-telling and like I said it can also be fun to many people like me.

The cool thing about Saints Row 2 is that it subverted your expectations in that you were the fucking BOSS of the gang right from the start. You didnt take no shit from anybody, and werent afraid to let em know.

It's been a while since I've played it, but its only in V I feel. The other games have cooler payoffs and story progression. V is like all 3 characters realizing everyone hates them, but at least they have each other. I don't mind characters who I would detest in real life leading a story (Succession, most mafia shows/movies, etc.), but the characters have to motive and direction. Only Franklin does in the beginning and his arc is over pretty quickly as he makes it outta the hood.
