IBM spills the beans!

IBM tells all the design requirements for each of the 3 nex gen consoles
"All of these [companies] are looking for a way to differentiate themselves from each other," said IBM's Su. "What we offered them is sort of a bag of tricks in terms of processor technology ... that they could pull from to differentiate their products."

Microsoft is emphasizing Internet connectivity with its new high-definition Xbox 360, as well as other entertainment features such as the ability to connect to home computers to play music and show movies.

Sony's new PlayStation is expected to introduce a new high-definition DVD technology, called Blu-ray, along with all sorts of ways to connect with other Sony electronics such as MP3 music players and digital cameras.

Nintendo, meanwhile, is sticking fast to the gaming business. It was looking mainly for ways to better display graphics, speed up the processing power of its GameCube successor, and make it more user-friendly, with wireless controller connections and other features.

I think this confirms Revolution is more powerful than 360 and PS3 combined.
Oh boy. Just when I thought people couldn't get their hopes up and get disappointed again. :lol

I dont dont really want to read too much into that statment.
But what she's saying is Sony and Microsoft were looking into more general purpose processors which are capable of a wide variety of tasks(internet, mp3, dvd, cameras, tivo etc etc.

Yet the goal of the Nintendo processor is simply to improve graphics performance without any other nonesense.

yeah i'm pretty sure thats what she means too. I don't know enough about processors to say how they would do that though.

If Nintendo is really just concerned with improving regarding game technology wouldn't it be best to go with a fast workhorse CPU that can run AI and control the overall flow of the system, but then hand off graphics, phsyics, and sound to specific chipsets for each of the three? Since physics chipsets are becoming a reality it'd seem to me like the ideal path to get maximum performance in that area at somewhat minimized costs.

If the dev. environment was done right it'd probably also be super easy to develope on.

REV to be the next Cube next gen :D .. in terms of cost and power, not sales lol

if nintendo were able to get 3rd party sell their NES/SNES/N64 games on REV, then it will be the MUST have secondary unit for non Nintendo fans :)

I don't understand why so many put weight in Perrin Kaplan words. I have never known her to be qualified enough to comment on a consoles technical capabilities.

Honsetly, even a 1.5ghz Athlon w/ Thunderbird core would still run todays games with decent RAM and GPU.

All this talk of 'Anything less than 3ghz is unacceptable' is bullshit, IMO. This isn't a x86 environment.

PS: plz don't consider this damage control, Amirox knows I'm cool!

The Nintendo haters are the ones who latched onto the quote and tried to have a field day with it.

Who ever thinks Nintendo will come out with the most visually stunning graphics is just kidding themselves. Heck..you can only put so much under such a little flat box
