If there was a $50,000 fine (both parties pay $50,000) for getting divorced, do you think there would be a lot less people getting married/divorced?

yes, but I also don't think that would necessarily be a good thing. there would be a lot of people who genuinely loved each other but would effectively be terrified of getting married. Even 1:10000 chance of owing $50K in guberment cheese are scary odds.

You say this as if there isn't already a price to pay for getting divorced. You know why I haven't cheated on my wife? Because no woman's worth 50% of my stuff. </old joke>

Getting divorced is not cheap as it is... what in the world would be the justification for a $50,000 fine?

There would be a lot more cases of spousal murder, too.

Want out of marriage but have no $50,000? A gun's cheaper.

In other words...forcing a couple to be together is a baaaaaaaaaaad idea. I do agree people are getting married by and large too early/divorcing too easily. Not sure what to do about it or if anything really should be done.

Maybe get rid of marriage altogether? Civil Unions for everyone, no marriage benefits for anyone. I dunno...

Out of curiosity, what's your thinking behind this question? If you do respond please don't offer the "just asking" since there's obvious weight behind it.

Why would you fine them, is there something wrong with getting married/divorced?

That's like fineing someone because they use the ATM machine instead of getting their money from inside the bank. -_-

Nothing needs to be done, more divorces is much preferred to people staying with abusive spouses.

Just asking...

j/k

LoL. Hmm.. I think all those philosophy classes I took have just led me to think about a lot of weird stuff. Not just ethical/moral issues, but ones based in science too, like my classic "Does bottled water have an expiration date?" thread. :)

It's just a "What if" question. =P

wait. what?

just because you're married doesn't mean that you have to live together. You could be separated. The only real problems are the legal ones. Like house ownership/mortgage/property issues, life insurance, etc. But even things like child care are less complicated without divorce. The kids could be with either parent whenever.. no court mandated rules.

Of course, getting married to someone else would be downright illegal. But if you love them that much then what's 50,000 dollars? Just time.

Plus with murder the obvious number 1 suspect is always the spouse. And the penalty for that is rather harsh compared to a 50,000 dollar fee.

Trust me, I don't subscribe to the line of thinking that murder would be even thinkable...but c'mon. You know there are people out there who would opt for disposing of their spouse. Whether it be for an insurance policy, another man/woman, or just to get out of it.

Again, forcing two people to be together, even legally, when they don't want to be would oftentimes lead to trouble.

You say "the only problems are legal"...well, those are pretty significant issues to be labeled as "only". Those legal problems could lead people to do illegal things.

Nope, but buying "Holidays for your loved one in exotic lands" (aka Warzone, 1 way ticket) sales would would become quite fashionable..."It's a surprise beautiful, I can't tell you where we're going"...

Oh, and the murder rate would rocket.

Huh? The only real reason people get married in the first place is for legal reasons.

What would happen if people knew for a fact that their spouse couldn't divorce them because they couldn't afford it? Wouldn't that end up forcing poor/middle class people to have to stay with habitual cheaters and only rich people being able to afford leaving a bad spouse?

Utterly retarded scenario...

why is divorce so bad? All a fine will do is make miserable people stay together when they dont really want to.

Or more logically, it'll just make people get separated and not go through the technical divorce process.

I can see the ads now during the daytime trash tv if this scenario happened...

"Ready to ditch that dead beat? Then come to the Moneystore, the divorce loan specialist."

...Is this a plan to pay off the national debt?
