If you can't beat the insurgency, mine as well provide them amnesty!

U.S. and Iraqi officials are considering difficult-to-swallow ideas — including amnesties for their enemies — as they look for ways to end the country’s rampant insurgency and isolate extremists wanting to start a civil war.

Negotiations have just begun between U.S. and Iraqi officials on drafting an amnesty policy, which would reach out to Iraqi militants fighting U.S. forces, say officials in both the Iraqi and American governments.

July 2, 2003:

"There are some who feel like that conditions are such that they can attack us there," Bush told reporters at the White House. "My answer is 'bring them on'. We have the force necessary to deal with the situation."

Fission mailed!!!

If the Bush Administration thinks that they can stop the insurgency by offering them amnesty I think they'll have yet another surprise coming their way. I don't think that Al Zarqawi's men will be like "Hey they offering us amnesty! Let's stop this fight!!!"

I love it. The bullshit's getting too thick for even Bush to wade in. Plus, now that Sordid Celebrity Trial #45678 is over, maybe even more people will pay attention. Hopefully.

If anyone has AOL, you should stop by the "War on Terror" room. It's a hoot watching the republicans make lazy assumptions and ignore facts about the Bush Admin. :lol

Perhaps it was the newly formed Iraqi government that came up with the idea of offering amnesty to there countrymen. The Bush Administration may not have thought of this as a policy at all, and the "negotiations" are on the best way to proceed. It's a possiblity anyway before everyone starts hanging the Administration for making this move.

That said, I don't see any of the insurgents turning themselves in for something like this. Criminals are the ones who take the offer for amnesty, freedom fighters do not.

You're absolutely right. I saw the fish in the barrel and just wanted to shoot. Darn my trigger finger.

My point exactly. Maybe I'm the dense one but to me the fact that they're (whoever they are) even considering amnesty seems to be a serious disconnect with the situation at hand. Still, I've been wrong many times, we'll have to see.

the problem is that there are so many insurgent groups.
al-zarqwis (sp) group is the worst and wont take amnesty.
the criminals that saddam released before the war are just that--criminals.
then you got the foreign fighters.
then the actual homegrown insurgents...... and lets not forget that the bristish have basically handed over their bases to the iraqi military and the al-badr militia is running basra. *sigh*

Ah it took you little less than 2 hours to post that reply. I was getting worried. Didn't know where you were.

If you don't want see anyone challenge the vacuous anti-Bush posts (probably a good 90% of the total anti-Bush posts on the OT) feel free to exercise the ignore option. But as I told someone earlier, you will miss a lot of top-shelf Eli Manning news and analysis.

So...we're just now figuring this out?

They couldn't look back at history and see that this has worked....ah geez, people in power...
