Just to add, let's not also forget that it was Reagan who expanded the covert involvement of the CIA in Afghanistan to undermine the Soviet Union. Then completely abandoned the mujahideen after the goal of defeating the Soviets was accomplished, leaving known jihadists to fight among themselves for control of the country (with a whole lot of materiel provided by the US). Ultimately, that led to the Taliban control of Afghanistan.

Republicans are masters at meddling in the affairs of other nations when it suits their needs only to end up going to war with them later.
