The bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on moral, ethical or religious grounds.

Racists, bigots, and ignorant assholes WIN

:(

this could expand to being about denying service to muslims or to people who have been arrested

This is terrible news, and I'm distraught that since I live so close to Michigan (IN), it could come down and affect this area, too. That'll leave my gay friends S.O.L., something that I'm completely against.

But what the hell is going on with GayWebMonkey.com? That's just about the most ridiculous website I've ever seen.

That can't actually go through, can it?

This bill's been around since 2003.

The same exact article was published in 2004, so the wording "next Wednesday" is a bit off: http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/04/042204MichMed.htm

Not that being old makes it less scary, it just looks like it's not going anywhere.

PWED!

On a side note I hate Michigan.

Yeah, I've heard of the bill before, but this time it could be different; with the way things are, who knows what's going to happen. It may actually have a small chance at getting passed this time. Just have to hope the Senate will err on the side of common sense and kill the bill again.

Honestly, people are so unaware of themselves. IMO, to deny people medical aid is to deny Catholicism charity. Reminds me of a short Borges fiction in which the theologian ends up wandering the dessert with deamons. This is really irritating me.

Considering that the governor of Michigan is a Democrat, I highly doubt that this bill would get written into law. She'd veto the shit out of it.

I think you guys are blowing this a bit out of proportion. All it really says is that for general practitioners....they can't get sued for refusing to accept patients they don't agree with. Obviously this doens't apply to surgeons and ER doctors and shit. This is just for family practitioners. And it's not just gays, it's ANYONE they don't agree with. This includes christions. So if a doctor said I don't wanna treat you cause you believe in God, he can't get sued over it, or if you're muslim or a jew or gay or ANYTHING. This DOESN'T mean "If you caught the gay, get outta my hospital" so your topic is incorrect and misleading. most doctors don't give a shit about that type of stuff so I don't see this (if it passes) having too big an impact. They're int he business of helping people. So what if a few dick doctors refuse to take you on as a patient, there's tons more that will.

For the record I don't think this'll pass nor do I think it should....it's just stupid to get all "lynch mob" over this.

Yeah... I actually LIVE in michigan, and it blows. We've successfully made it so that gays are second-hand citizens. But, would you expect anything less from an industry which makes money off of peoples sicknesses?

EDIT: By the way... this probably will pass. Michigan has turned horribly republican lately. Kerry won the state in the national election, but he did it by only winning four counties... the three big cities and University of Michigan.

That is fucking horrible. Move to Canada!

I've met a lot of cool Americans that have moved up here, the more the merrier.
Michigan would have a lot more Canadian type people if Detroit wasn't blocking the entrance.

Woah woah woah, don't blame this on healthcare. It's a couple of fuckin loonies slapping their bible who got this shit thru.

I find it hard to believe that doctors would refuse to treat gay patients. Even in the Bible Belt, I doubt any doctor not named Mengele is that evil.

Like any industry, you'll find one or two wackos who believe god spoke to them and refuse to fill a girl's morning after pill. But most doctor's should know better. People don't get upset if you refuse to do a certain procedure (i.e. abortions) but to refuse patients based on beliefs reminds me too much of redneckery.

Wow, what on earth is wrong with ya'll? I can't believe so many are vehemently opposed to a person's right to conscientiously object to something they don't believe in.

Eh nevermind, I just saw that the bill allows doctors to object to patients and not just procedures. That's just stupid. But still, I'm all for allowing doctors to object to procedures they disagree provided they aren't denying the patient the ability to have it.

Wow...I'm from Michigan and I'm really surprised at how "Red" my state is. I'm surprised that I live in a "Red" County (Kalamazoo). It really doesn't seem like it at all until I see things like this in the news.

I guess it could stem from the fact that my boss is gay, I am friends with about 7-8 different homosexuals, and because it seems that being gay is the new IN thing.

While this bill isn't exclusive to gays, I think it's pretty disgusting that a doctor could deny anyone of receiving fair treatment. We may not be talking surgeons or anything Yet...but the seeds are being planted for that shit to sprout up in the future.

Where are all these people at? I hate being compared to Indiana :lol

That's gotta be BS.

I'm an EMT, and one of the first things we're taught is that we can't refuse treatment to anyone, under any circumstances save for situations where doing so would risk your own lives. Anybody in the health care system with the ability to treat a patient doesn't have the right to refuse help. Hospital espeically can't. Whether the patient has documentation or not, whether the patiend is an illegal resident, whether the patient can pay, anybody who comes to a hospital has a right to medical treatment (one of the reasons why California is shutting down hospitals is because we get so many illegal immigrants who don't identify themselves and who don't pay).

Of course, that's in emergency cases. I'm not sure if the same rules apply to someone who goes to a family practicioner because he/she is sick. But in any emergency case in this nation, you cannot withhold medical treatment. It's a felony.

The article states that the same rules don't apply. In emergency situations, all patients must be treated. In casual situations, the doctor can pick and choose who they want to have as patients. There are plenty of good, honourable doctors to go around, so no biggy. It sets a horrible precent, but it won't be the end of the world.

The article stated that this law would give an EMT the right to not respond to a 911 call from a homosexual couple. That's the part that caught my attention.

The rest of Michigan is not making this easy.

There are few perks to living in Wayne county. Being one of the.."blue"..counties is just about it.

Whoops, right you are.

I'm curious how EMT's would obtain documention of one's sexuality, though. It also seems contradictory that emergency care cannot be refused, yet EMT's can refuse to answer an emergency call.

"However, it would prohibit emergency treatment to be refused."

'Opponents of the bills said they're worried they would allow providers to refuse service for any reason. For example, they said an emergency medical technicians could refuse to answer a call from the residence of gay couple because they don't approve of homosexuality."

whaa?? Maybe the opponents of the bill in question are making shit up.

"If you caught the gay, get outta my hospital" so your topic is incorrect and misleading.

Yes. Yes it was. But was it not cocky and funny? How many times do you get to use "caught the gay" in a (kinda sorta) legitimate way? Let me have fun!

Also, other news hiding under the Schiavo landslide is that Georgia is about to make it a requirement to have a photo ID in order to vote. Sounds good on the outside, but what if you lose your ID? You're outta luck. Why do people need something they can lose, costs money, and that some people just plain don't have (some of the elderly in nursing homes, poor, etc.)?
If they need some type of hard proof of who you are, well damn that's what fingerprints are for! Granted some people may not have some or all of their fingers, and that's where I can see the ID coming in handy, but the way the bill is now, it's just... gah.

Well, think of it this way, if you're gay, do you really want to put your life in the hands of a homophobe? The hospital isn't refusing to treat gays, the hospital is just trying to avoid assigning anti-gay doctors to gay patients.

Don't look now, but I also just saw a poll broadcast on the Saginaw (maybe it was Flint) news channel, conducted by Lansing, saying how almost 70% of people in the state support making the Pledge of Allegiance mandatory and legal in schools.

Doesn't mean anything now... but if people get behind this insurance thing, I think it's safe to assume that politicians will catch the Patriot Bug and try something like this, too, knowing that they have the support of 70% of the state.

I know you're idealistic, but really, have you seen the democratic party lately? Much like a new Fox series, they'll kill and alter their stance in a desperate attempt to get any sort of attention -- and Christian morals are HOT HOT HAWT! At least the Republicans are consistent in their iniquities.
