English
Mandarin Chinese (but Traditional Chinese for writing)
Latin

Why Latin? Because Latin is fucking cool.

English - Duh
Russian - Those women are hot, and even I could get a 10 there.
French - Just so I could be an obnoxious prick in real life too.

When I was in Beijing, many store owners understood Japanese better than English. Also, when I was in Paris, some signs in the airport were only in English, French and Japanese. Real Madrid's website is in English, Spanish and Japanese. I guess Japanese really are big spenders.

English
Mandarin
Spanish

You're set with 3 of the world's most used languages. As much as I would enjoy learning Japanese completely, I'd rather learn Mandarin and perhaps even a few of it's dialects.

However I may only ever need English and Mandarin (currently studying it to boot).. since fiance knows fluent English, Mandarin, Spanish and a Chinese dialect I have forgotten the name of. She's currently learning Japanese.. her father is fluent in all 4 of the above and has basic Korean & Cantonese skills. People knowing more than 5 languages = legends. The damn bastard even has a scholarship with Tokyo University.

1. English
2. Japanese
3.

I can't decide on a third one. It'd be nice to be able to speak German, Korean and hell, Cantonese. I already understand Tagalog, but have no interest in it. I doubt I'll do well in Spanish as I can't remember all those irregular conjugations (seriously... they're scary). I guess out of all of those, I'd just take Spanish.

WHY COULDN'T IT BE 4 LANGUAGES?!?!

Alright, just found out that the second most spoken language in the world is Spanish so I decided to change mine to...

1. Hopi <--- According to Einstein, the best language in the modern world. It's a dying language also, so it's interesting to know about this language.
2. Mandarin <--- For the simple reason it's spoken by almost a billion people.
3. Spanish <--- Didn't realize it was spoken by a lot of people, Southern Americas to Spain in Europe... I just realized that.

2) French- second most widely spoken language (I think)

No, I think Mandarin, English and Spanish come before it.

Now to answer the main question.

I'd pick English, French and Spanish. Most of the world is open to you with those languages.

If I were to pick languages I don't speak already, I could be a bit more exotic by choosing Latin, ancient Greek and Icelandic/old Norse.

Must of been mistaken. I was under the impression (from my History teacher) that the French were great colonisers and French was still spoken in parts of Africa, Pacific Islands and the such. Guess that must of been outdated. Then I change my choice it to Spanish.

"As of 1999, French was the 11th most common first language in the world, with 77 million first language speakers and another 51 million second language speakers, according to the Ethnologue Report. (1)

For the same year, Rapport sur l'état de la Francophonie dans le monde (2) offers more detailed figures:

* 113 million Francophones - Speak French (as a native or adopted language) fluently and use it on a regular basis.
* 61 million "occasional" Francophones - Live in a francophone country but do not speak French regularly, due to limited knowledge.
* 100-110 million students of all ages - Do not live in a francophone country, but have learned/are learning French in order to communicate with Francophones.

French is the second most commonly-taught second language in the world (after English)."

English should be a freebie.

- English
- Japanese
- Spanish

If English is a freebie add French.

Right now I can speak English, French and I'm pretty good at Taiwanese, and somewhat good at Mandarin and Japanese.

I guess I would say English, Mandarin and Japanese.

English - it's the language of business.
Spanish - hey, now I can watch Univision and understand all the beautiful women!
Japanese - just because it fascinates me.

I can already speak English, so that doesn't count and I couldn't narrow it down to only 3, so here are my top 4.

Mandarin
Spanish
Japanese (possibly replace with Arabic)
German

Latin - Because it's fucking cool.

Arabic - So I can understand the videos the enemies of the United States release without subtitles that might not be accurate.

Japanese - So I can take everything I learn from the above two and write/direct a hit anime series filled with controversy and then live off the franchise for the rest of my life by spawning strip poker/mahjong games and breeding sim games based on the characters in said show.

:D :D :D :D :D :D

English
Japanese - Already know a bit from Uni but it'd be good to master
Gaelic - Original Scottish language (all signs in the Highlands have dual English/Gaelic). I'm Scottish so it would be good to know the lingo. It looked to be dying for a while but there's a big drive at the mo to educate people.

Alien

By knowing Chinese, I got all of the kanji down which probably accounts for the biggest hurdle in Japanese and it is used in other areas of Asia besides China. Alien cause I know something that you don't. Only I can speak with ET!
