If you ever wonder why always online single player sucks, check out Space Marine 2!

Yep, always online SP games suck for great variety of reasons. From having to deal with sometimes unreliable Internet to dev/publisher servers to preservation issues down the road, it’s completely unnecessary.

If they want to have characters that are separate for MP which would be always online and SP that is fine, but need to have they offline SP option.

For me, always online SP game usually means I would never get it at release and only on very heavy sales months or years later if at all.
Yep. I hate it and its one of the reasons why I am no supporting companies who do this
I can't wait to get into it

when the price comes down
It’s always online? I didn’t even know. Why didn’t gamers kick up more of a fuss about this? There’s no reason for this.
Why do single player games need an online connection again?
I didn't know this had an online requirement for single player.

Is it safe to assume, then, that Quick Resume for Xbox doesn't work in this title?
Didn't even know SM2 had this. Does this mean that the collectors among us can't play the game say 20 years from now?
Didn't get AC 2 when Ubisoft did this back in 2009 on PC, and i haven't supported it since, no good reason to have a singleplayer game to be always online.
Damn I didn't know this was always online.
Always online single player... who ever thought of that should be fired.
I'm just gonna quote everyone that got misinformation from the OP so they don't skip this awesome game, this game is NOT always online. The campaign is 100% completable offline, the operations mode has separate saves for offline and online mode. This is a product that gamers should 100% support, complete and polished release on disc even with no patches.

My comment was for all online only single player games.

Well if the offline save isn't working as it should then the OP's post isn't misinformation. He obviously experienced an issue with this because he lost progress in the game. So "no patches" doesn't really mean much when it clearly needs a patch.

Thanks for the clarification, this is relevant and important info

Apparently I was in error when I mentioned that Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr required a constant online connection. It looks like they patched that out earlier this year so it is playable offline.

However, the standalone expansion which would be Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Prophecy does indeed require or constant online connection to play single player.

Why they did that with the standalone expansion doesn't make too much sense to me after they patched it out of the base game.

I also wish they would get rid of that awful Denuvo for Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters. I mean, come on.

He said the game is always online in the OP, that's misinformation which was exactly what the people I quoted were complaining about.

You put the game in rest mode instead of quitting and saving properly. Seems like a you issue not an online issue. Servers sometimes go offline for maintenance. It's also a coop game not a pure singleplayer game.

I've had some weird connection issues with the game, but it's always saved my Campaign progress and dumped me into the offline mode. On Pc.

For the record SM2 is coop and the OP had it in online mode. You can play the single player offline or save and quit. He just had it online and shit happened. Not saying he did anything wrong just that Focus the dev does support offline single player.

Also I swear I’m going to bust into seizures with the amount of misinformation and whining in this thread. 1 sm2 is a coop game not a single player game. And it clearly has an offline mode like Google it. JFC.

Interesting, checked out DoesItPlay analysis of the disc https://www.doesitplay.org/game/Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II/ps5/Base PS5?region=ESRB&version=Standard and they say the following

* When playing Operations mode offline progress will track. However the game says when you go online that progress will be reset.

Content Completed:

* Campaign completed.

* All Operation missions complete.

So it seems that you may have gone online at the last moment and it reset your progress or something?

Maybe? I didn't play it online for any reason so it would have been automatically done. I have seen the message since that states continuing offline will result in lost progress which rest mode does.

Where is the option to not play online then? Every time I start up the campaign mission, the game joins a server so that your friends can join if you invite them, but I don't see an option to play offline completely.

This is the point of rest mode. Don't come in here with a superior attitude when you're an actual moron.
This post is moronic because you can play offline just fine. I play steam and my PS5 in offline mode 99% of the time unless I need to download something and Space Marine operates just fine.

If your console is online, however, then it will play online. There isn't any option that I can see to play offline. Shouldn't have to take your console offline entirely for this. The problem some have had is losing progression when the game kicks you offline due to inactivity, from what I've seen.

This isn't hate for the game itself. It is fantastic. I just think if it is possible for the game to be played entirely offline then that should be an option in the game. That would avoid these issues.

Avoid online shit at all cost.

You paid your single player game for an offline experience.
You deserve to be able to play without anything interrupting your experience.
You deserve to be able to pause the game whenever you feel like it.
You deserve to have your content saved and never lost for a shitty reason.

If you don't get all of this from your game, then it is not acceptable.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
On a slightly tangential note.

SM2 doesn't seem to have an 'offline' mode, even though you can play the game offline on a system level. Suicide Squad recently added a proper Offline mode, which lets you bring your profile to an offline segmented section of the game.

And in this offline segment, I've been using Quick Resume without any worry, even in the middle of a cut-scene, and progress resumed exactly where I left it when I resumed the game back.

To help DryvBy DryvBy 's issue, SM2 would have benefited from a proper Offline mode.

The original Assassin's Creed 1 had some weird online monitoring bullshit. It actually causes the game to hitch like crazy.

You have to edit a config file to disable it.

Agree. There is no reason to a singleplayer hav DRM. Probably the worst scam of the gaming history.

That ain't the worst part about SM2 - the LONGGG loading times is what really pisses me off :
Start the game -- get booted to the main menu -- press on play -- game loads for 35-40 seconds -- try to find a lobby, lobby found -- another 35 seconds loading screen -- start playing -- host for whatever reason drops -- game loads for 35 seconds back to the lobby menu - rinse and repeat...

It's one of the worst games right now when it comes to loading and I don't get it, shit, it feels like being back during the PS3/PS4 era with the mechanical drives, i still have PTSD from RDR2 and GTAV to name a few.

Meanwhile, WH: Darktide's loading is pretty normal.for.an online game 🤔
Agreed. The games running on a fucking SSD yet it's got the most ridiculous load times I've seen in years. Garbage.

The load times are due to online from what I've seen. Here I am playing the campaign by myself and the game is joining a server.
