Pick up VAIOTM Duo 11 in one hand and use in tablet mode to browse the web or enjoy music and videos while you're travelling. In the office, slide out the keyboard and maximise your productivity with a fully-featured PC powered by latest-generation Intel® Core™ processors.

VAIOTM Duo 11 puts touch and handwriting right at the heart of your Windows 8 computing experience. Write, sketch and interact with media and applications on the responsive, touch capable, super-bright Full HD OptiContrast™ Panel. A unique pressure-sensitive digitizer stylus gives the satisfying, expressive feel of handwriting directly on the touchscreen. Make notes, sketch diagrams or ring key points on your presentation with supple responses and imperceptible latency. Smart text recognition even lets you quickly convert handwritten notes to text for easy archiving and searches.

A choice of swappable pen tips lets you select between a firm or softer writing feel. With selected apps VAIOTM Duo 11 even recognises when you're writing, cleverly ignoring the pressure of your palm on the touchscreen.

Sharing photos and videos is a pleasure on the super-bright 29.4cm (11.6") Full HD OptiContrast™ Panel*. Friends and family will enjoy detail-packed, high contrast pictures with a wide viewing angle – even if you're outdoors in bright daylight.

Don't let your PC slow things down when you're in a hurry. Quick Boot gets you up and running in seconds. When you need a break, VAIO powers down into a deep energy-saving Sleep mode, keeping your documents safe. With RapidWake + Eco, everything's ready for instant wake-up, just as you left off.

Optional Sheet-type battery extends battery life, and also incorporates a handy digitizer stylus holder.

Despite its slim size, VAIOTM Duo 11 is ready for business with a full complement of ports and interfaces including Bluetooth® Smart Ready, USB 3.0, HDMI, Ethernet and VGA video ports. You don't need extra dongles or adapters to hook up a projector or secondary screen: everything's on board.

There's a generous choice of apps to make the most of the unique touch experience offered by VAIOTM Duo 11.

Active Clip™ makes it easy to crop photos and graphics with no special image editing skills. Just draw roughly around the edge of your chosen picture with the digitizer stylus. Active Clip™ uses technology developed by Sony that automatically detects edges and cuts out the background. Then drop the cleanly-bordered image straight into documents or presentations.

'Note Anytime for VAIO' lets you make handwritten notes any time... just like using a real notebook. (NB: this application will be available by download after VAIOTM Duo 11 on-sale date).

There's also an add-in for PowerPoint that brings extra impact and interaction to your presentations. Use the digitizer stylus to highlight points as you talk and capture audience feedback.

VAIOTM Duo 11 also provides rich networked entertainment experiences.

Through Sony's One-touch* function, you can easily and instantaneously enjoy music and photos across an array of NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled Sony devices. Simply touch one device against another, and instantly establishing a wireless connection without the need for any Bluetooth or Wi-Fi set up. For example, it's easy to continue listening to music stored on your VAIO through Bluetooth® headphones or speakers with One-touch function.

* One-touch by Sony incorporates Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

You can also enjoy full access to millions of songs and themed radio channels at any time via Sony Entertainment Network's Music Unlimited service (in selected countries).

Expand your entertainment experience even further with three new apps by Sony that are available for free download.

The 'Music' application lets you enjoy your music collection with superb quality thanks to xLoud and ClearPhase.

The 'Album' application makes viewing, sorting or sharing pictures and videos fun and intuitive.

Based on what your friends are reading, Socialife also points you to other popular topics and even suggests content that you might like.

Wow, full HD and lighter than an iPad 3, going to cost a fortune I bet, still nice to see some interesting Windows 8 hardware finally getting announced.

Edit: Oh wait it's in kg, makes much more sense tbh.

2.9 lbs…nope. It's fine for laptop use but I wouldn't use something that heavy as a tablet. 1.4lbs on the iPad 3 is already pushing it for me.

There'll be plenty more to come, this is definitely on the higher end of the specs for these designs though. 1.5k for the i7 with 256GB SSD maybe?

This looks really good. Sony needs to price this right and not try to charge a premium because of the Sony name.

I hope Sony can get the base spec model below $1,000 as this looks like a very nice product that can sell well at the right price. Outside of the good specs the biggest thing that jumped to me is that it will be made in Japan. Sony has shown they can deliver great products with that Made in Japan quality like the RX100 camera and if this delivers, I hope they can bring out even better stuff in the future. Kaz is slowly but surely steering Sony in the right direction.

My thoughts exactly. On all counts.

I don't know what to get, this or surface.

I guess i'll wait for reviews. Just from the pictures I like the keyboard better on the Sony.

That's the total weight no? The tablet part only is probably half of that at least.

I really dislike the windows 8 branding on the screen, but i assume that's the do everything button. I need to see this in person, but seem like a neat laptop.

I don't know if this company cares to be competitive or they just can't do anything until the phone division moves back to Japan, but there is no reason today's Xperia phones shouldn't be shipping with 4.1. None. Even the new galaxy note is getting announced with 4.1 and it'll likely hit shelves faster than any of these phones.

edit: wrong thread lol

Don't see the point - buying a desktop PC that is way better + iPad will be cheaper than buying one of these products. I remain unconvinced on the subject of ultrabooks, I thought tablets got so popular due to the fact people do not require a portable device with the same specs as their desktop PCs?

The Duo is something I would actually buy... I am not in the market for a tablet, but it isn't really just a tablet. The fact that it retains the qualities of an ultrabook and has a keyboard is a key aspect for me. Hopefully they price this right... but those specification are crazy, so I expect at least $1000.

that's the Tap 20, not the Duo 11

Well that's rather stupid.
It seems like a good alternative to those upset by Lenovo's inability to put higher resolution screens in their X series tablets. If the quality is good, it'll have a following like the Vaio Z.

Personally though, if I was going to get a laptop/tablet hybrid I would prefer one that detaches from a keyboard dock.

Yeah, I'm waiting for a price announcement, too.

I think everyone will be waiting for pricing but, despite some flaws (it just screams for a detachable keyboard!), these seem pretty good. Better than I would've expected at least. And a decent range of specs too.

I wonder what the bundled software will be like? I hope it's not the usual bloat/crap - something slick enough tying into whatever Sony's online store(s) are now called would be great and probably enough to push me over the edge.

The Tap 20 could have been so great for designers and photographers if only it had a dedicated video card and a pen touch panel :(

Really clever deigns. I'm impressed. And here after the week of patent talk and Samsung v Apple, it is nice to see that new ideas are still out there. Imagine that.

So I went to IFA yesterday, Sony has the entire Hall 4.2 partitioned to highlight their different divisions. There was Vita, Vaio notebooks, etc. I got a chance to take a look at Duo and Tap.

Tap: I see this as their next Vaio-all-in-one desktop range. Nothing special.

Duo: sorry, the concept doesn't work. If you combine a notebook and a tablet you end up with heavy tablet, and that is exactly what Duo is. For someone with larger hands typing will get problematic as the keyboard buttons are fairly small. They advertised Duo having "new-generation" gorilla glass, and it seems to be true, they were knocking on the screen with no visible effect. However, the slide-out mechanism is rather resistant, and not very comfortable to use, it took me literally 15-20sec to figure out how to push the screen to the back, etc.

It is certainly a novelty, but I don't see it being very popular. As mentioned - tablet weighting as much as notebook just doesn't work.

Its a goddamn shame they aren't revisiting the Vaio P. :[

For all you Wacom fans, don't get excited. This is using either Waltop or UC Logic digitizer (with battery inside the pen).

HD 4000 is nice, that'll run a lot of modern games pretty well. Don't like the nipple, though.

It's going to take me like 500 hours of research to finally decide on a Win 8 tablet/ultrabook. So many choices, none of them really blowing everyone else away (except maybe the Surface?).
