After wowing audiences at this year's E3 with a highly cinematic trailer, Digital Extremes' upcoming sci-fi game Dark Sector appeared to fall completely off of the face of the Earth. That silence ended today with the announcement that D3Publisher has signed on to publish Dark Sector with a targeted release date of the third quarter 2007.

According to Yoji Takenaka, executive vice president and COO for D3P of America, the chance to "to work with the world renowned design team that James Schmalz has assembled at Digital Extremes is just too good to pass up...we are very proud to be working with them on Dark Sector."

Digital Extremes founder James Schmalz commented that "D3Publisher impressed us with their commitment to publishing high quality next-generation games that exceed gamers' expectations, which we certainly expect to do with Dark Sector."

The game is being touted as a "modern-day superhero saga" where the main character, Hayden Tenno, gains the ability to morph into different combat forms. The game is set in the "crumbling infrastructure of a fictional Soviet-bloc country in the near future...where bio-weapons are no longer science experiments, but a hellish nightmare let loose on an unsuspecting populace."

While the game's description seems to be quite a bit different than the sci-fi trailer we saw at E3, we are still intrigued by its premise and will be keeping a close eye on its development.

Already knew D3 Publisher was the publiseher for Dark Sector. If you paid attension the to the listed of titles planned for the PS3 at TGS, next to D3 Publisher was Dark Sector.

I wouldn't be surprised if the game slipped into sometime in 2007. And, for what it's worth, the Xbox 360 channel's release calendar also shows Q3 2007, so I don't think it's an article typo. Good way of them to totally avoid Halo 3 in the sci-fi arena, I guess?
