IGN: DS going online with Pokemon?

http://ds.ign.com/mail/

I was wondering even though nintendo hasn't said anything about wifi hasn't someone cracked open the ds or searched on a wireless network for a wifi chip or signal?

Justin

Technical savvy Nintendo DS owners have indeed been poking around the DS hardware to see what sort of WiFi capabilities the system has, and in fact, just a few days after the system shipped several people with the necessary equipment noticed that PictoChat was actually sending the DS system's MAC address out wirelessly via 802.11. MAC addresses are, like an IP address, an identifier attached to pretty much any networking equipment, but unlike IP addresses, a MAC address is permanent/hardwired to the hardware. So it's just a matter of time until someone cracks the DS broadcast code and enables games to broadcast over the internet.

In the meantime, however, there's been rumblings at Nintendo that indicate that the company will finally unwrap its DS online plans very very soon. As it goes, Nintendo left the keys to the WiFi car in the hands of the third-party developers, but the third-party developers didn't want to drive it without Nintendo making the engine. So, as a result, if we've been hearing things correctly, Nintendo will finally and very, very soon, reveal its own "Xbox Live" like service for developers to adopt. And the first game out of Nintendo to use this service will be one of those massively killer Nintendo brands that people have been wanting to play online for years...

Maybe we'll finally see what that AOL/Pokemon deal was about from a year or so ago...

(was that even confirmed?)

It could be Smash Bros DS.

Hell, I've always wanted Nintendo to team up with Square and make a MMORPG involving the Zelda universe. If I had my way, it would be called Hyrule Fantasy.

Could be alot of things.

Smart money is on Pokemon, though.

This better not mean Metroid won't be online!

... and judging from that vague hint, I'd bet Mario Kart is the game in question...

for reference, developers got their network kits in late august / early september. so take my word for it, just go ahead and expect that march announcement to be online related.

who knows, maybe capcom will beat them to it next week.

It's Pokemon.

I speculate that this is pretty much the deciding factor of why the DS can play GBA games.

"Hey kids, want to see if your pokemon training skills are the best? Upload your GBA RuSa/FiLe Pokemon to Diamond/Pearl and play trainers around the world!"

Now that you mention it, Smash Bros. does seem like a more likely choice. Nintendo doesn't seem like they want to do all that work to get a MMORPG up and running, and Smash Bros. would be a whole lot easier. I can't think of any other games Craig might be referring to...

EDIT: Dammit, MK would work, too.

Is it sinking?

I'm sure you've seen the japanese weekly sales, but not even counting that, in a couple of months when consumers see the two portables side by side there will be no comparison.

Also, doesn't this hardware-encoded MAC address mean that Nintendo could Permaban any system that was abusing the kiddies in a Pokemon-like, family friendly environment?

I have to take the news w/ a grain of salt too...

Why people think this is referring to Pokemon (which will not drop until November at the earliest, since Dash hasn't even come out yet in the US) is beyond me though!

Dude, those japanese weekly sales had the PSP ahead by like 1000 units for the week, and a different polling service for the same week had the NDS ahead. Not really a problem.

Plus Yoshi comes out this week :)

So what's stopping them seeing them side by side now? I don't even own a DS anymore and I'm getting pretty fucking sick of these supposed grandeur visions of a DS backlash.

Massive Nintendo franchise that people have wanted online for years? I think this is most likely Mario Kart, which is fine by me, since it's one of my favorite Nintendo franchises. :)

As long as Nintendo makes Mario Kart and Animal Crossing online, all will be good.

I could most certainly live with this being Mario Kart Online, as well. The last one was LAN, and online seems like a natural evolution.

Not a backlash, just the PSP steadily outselling the DS is all. I am happy Nintendo is not just sitting on it's ass, though.

Same here. I'll believe it when I see it. But it is sad that once again it seemed like Nintendo's original intention was to just leave online to 3rd parties without doing anything themself.

Just off the top of my head, Games that will do well on-line for DS

Advance Wars
Pokemon
Animal Crossing
Metroid Prime Hunters
Mario Kart

also the title of this thread is misleading.

One thing is for sure though. Nintendo's done so much work (much of which went unreleased) in the online arena over the years that whatever solution they finally do come up with should be ace.

Ugh, I'm so tired of speculating and hoping for online Nintendo games...but I can't help but do it everytime. :(

Online Pokemon, Mario Kart and Super Smash. Please, God.

Oh my god!!! Pokemon + Advance Wars + Animal Crossing + Mario Kart online would be the best thing that ever happened, but which game will be the first, which game is IGN talking abuot?

~prays for RandNet~ :lol

I dunno, this time it seems to be for real. Why go through the bother of incorporating WiFi technology with your hardware and not use it? Nintendo has already semi-ammounced that Square-Enix have something in the works involving the DS and its wireless (if not online) features. Plus Nintendo has been very quiet about DS announcements considering PSP loomes in the horizon. I don't think they're taking anything sitting down this time. We'll see...

I'm certain that it's the real deal this time. Iwata seems to want to put all of those ideas that Nintendo has been brewing in R&D over the years to actual use. That's why I don't see the problem with checking Nintendo's patents (as opposed to years past, when the good ones seemed like pipe dreams that Nintendo would never use)

Also, I'd be surprised if EA wasn't on the NDS online bandwagon. Maybe that Goldeneye DS(port or not) will end up having online multiplayer afterall!

There was an activision interview on IGN about spiderman 2(ds). Activision said flat out that they do not want to be responsible for making the DS online. They wanted a XBL service. To them, xbl was xbox's saving grace.

IGN: Do you think this is something Nintendo will be setting up, or is it something that Nintendo's going to hope developers and individual publishers will pull off on their own, a la GameCube Phantasy Star Online?

Jorge: I hope it wouldn't be up to us. Xbox Live is one of the saving graces of the system, and people are into the system because of Live. I would like to see Nintendo try something like it for the DS.

Karthik: Obviously Nintendo hasn't officially announced anything on it, so we're anxious to hear what they are doing with it. There's certainly more work involved in getting a game online. What they have done with the multiplayer wireless so far is really nice, and way better than what was done in the past. There were difficulties in multiplayer on past systems, but Nintendo's done a really nice job this time around.

Sometimes I wonder if it's safe for little kids to be playing games online. I mean if there's chat involved...

"Johnny, clean up your room!"

"WHAT THE FUCK, JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP KEKEKEKEKE"

The weird thing is, Craig stated this as fact. Love IGN or hate it, they're usually VERY reliable, so this is all but confirmation that the DS will be going online. Hints from Miyamoto in interviews regarding SE have suggested it, too. (Well, more teases than hints, but... :lol)

DemaSked, anyone? :P

I had forgotten all about DeMasked. I don't know if we want to bunch that into all this, though. Not just yet.

I wish someone had a backlog of all the Nintendo Online comments Iwata and others made (starting with the begining of Iwata's reign)

Putting two and two together (assuming Craig is right), yeah, that makes the most sense.

It's either Pokemon or Mario Kart.. I dont see how it could be anyhting else. I hope for DS sake its Pokemon though, that would be a killer app that would kill in the Japanese market.

I wonder if this will influence Square Enix to take FF:CC online?

Also, I wonder if those PSO:DS rumors will turn out to be true. That'd be nice.

When did the PSP begin to "steadily outsell the DS"? If by "steadily" you mean "outsell the DS for one week", I agree.

Also, online Pokmeon would be the absolute only thing that could make me go back and buy a Pokemon game. I so hope it's that... oh please be something awesome... MMORPG Pokemon PLZ

I probably shouldn't be doing this, but IGN saying that the DS will go online to me pretty much confirms it. :D

If ANYTHING is going online with the DS, it's Animal Crossing. That game better be online... Just thinking about it... PLEASE NINTENDO!!!

BTW, Nintendo did experiment in Japan with Pokemon Crystal using cell-phones if I remember correctly. With additions like the Union Room in FR/LG, an online trading/battle part to the new Pokemon could be pretty neat. I highly doubt it will be a true MMORPG.
