I mean it's missing Zelda but it's got astrobot so not that bad. 🤷‍♂️

Also great graphics do not equal a great game. I know that's hard for a lot of you to understand.

When Path of Exile 2 early access, with just half of the campaign available (same goes for classes and ascendancies) is more exciting than the whole GOTY list.. well ye.

Not a terrible year, could even argue it was good, but there's nothing we'll remember and talk about in a year, that's true.

IGN is probably winning because games like Veilguard, Dustborn, Unknown 9: Awakening and Concord weren't nominated for the best games of the year.

It missed the date cutoff. As does Flight Sim 24 and Indy.
Why, though. Who sets these cutoff days. It's still 2024 and that's fact. Put your damn awards in 2025 then so you can consider games that... well, came in 2024. Even if it's 31st December.

No way to tell why McCaffrey thinks this, but he's right. This year has been pathetic for the medium. Remakes and remasters swamping the calendar, NINO IP, regressing sequels, technical amateur hour releases, and a general lack of energy.

Good year for smaller AAA games and new studios. Extraordinarily bad year in gaming for big AAA games. Outlaws and Veilguard were massively dissapointing. There are like 10 huge games coming out next year comparably

Monster Hunter
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Assassins Creed
Doom
Fable
Death Stranding 2
Ghost of Yotei
GTA 6
Mafia 4
Bioshock 4
Marathon

And that is only what has been announced. Why couldn't some of that shit come out this year, damn

Undoubtedly a slow year
he's right. This year has been pathetic for the medium

Have a look at this:

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Dragon's Dogma 2
Tekken 8
Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Persona 3 Reload
Helldivers II
Earth Defense Force 6
Balatro
Pacific Drive
FF7 Rebirth
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Unicorn Overlord
Rise of the Ronin
Stellar Blade
FF7: Rebirth
Nine Sols
Selaco
Manor Lords
ER: Shadow of the Erdtree
Black Myth Wukong
Space Marine 2
Visions of Mana
Astro Bot
UFO 50
Ys X: Nordics
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Metaphor ReFantazio
Dragonball Sparking Zero
Metro VR

All released in 2024, there are probably more I'm forgetting about. If this is a shit year then I wish we had more of those.

We could get into the specifics, but at the bottom line is that none of those games inspire enthusiasm around gaming, which is at an all time low right now. The results speak for themselves. The vast majority of that list lost a nomination to DLC. DLC that wasn't groundbreaking.

Y'all keep forgetting how dogshit 2021 was

That year genuinely struggled with proper GOTY candidates, while this year some nominees could even be replaced with games like Silent Hill 2, Stellar Blade, Zelda, Helldivers 2, Space Marines 2, Infinite Wealth, Dragon's Dogma 2, etc.

Maybe the game awards should be in January.

Why is it not in January?
I've watched maybe a total of 45 minutes of the game awards over the past 10 years and not sure about the bureaucracy of it.

What? I saw lots of conversation going around some of the games I posted. Don't know what you mean sorry.

For the love of God and everything above, who gives a shit about GOTY nominations? Is that your measurement of a game's qualities?

2024 saw a lot of quality game releases that were very fun to play, and imo that's all that matters.

If you only play Western AAA games it was a shit year

In which case you should probably re-examine your life decisions
So the majority of the market had a shit year. That re-examination might just mean people stop bothering all together beyond playing more Fortnite.

What do you think people buy 500-700 dollar consoles for? 2D platformers and visual novels?

Like which ones? FF7R underperformed. Dragon's Dogma 2 disappointed. Stellar Blade is irrelevant outside of the flash in the pan culture war debate around it. Topped out a 1 million sold, and no one talks about it. Rise of the Ronin is Koei Tecmo slop and has the scores to prove it. Silent Hill 2 is a paint by the numbers remake. Not bad in itself, but it's the fact that it overshadowed the new releases so handily despite not being that remarkable.

No. But be honest, when it's this bad, it does indicate a larger problem. When not even the journalists can pretend to be pleased with the year's output, you have problems.

FF7R underperformed: who cares if it is fun to play?
Dragon's Dogma 2 disappointed: true, but still was fun to play imo.
Stellar Blade is irrelevant: ok but was it fun to play?

And the same with the rest.

It's fine we disagree, I think it's just that we have a different idea for a "good year" is. For me, as a user, a good year means getting a lot of releases that are fun to play. And I got them for sure.

Imo journalists opinion shouldn't matter at all.

2024 was an amazing year for JRPG fans, better luck next year for everyone else.
This, as someone who is fan of JRPG and overall fan of Japanese games, this year absolutely amazing.

His similar to Men_in_Boxes, he doesn't care about if game is fun or not he mostly care about "market" behind the games.

lol does that Stellar blade game do that when the player tries to move the camera into compromising positions? if so that's well funny
Might be part of the Nier dlc? In that game 2B did the same.

Must be because there are many screenshots of Eve's ass from much closer.

Danjin, you're just salty that I was right about FF16, and that I didn't prostrate at the alter of Metaphor. Come off it, it's embarrassing.

Huh? Astrobot, Metaphor, and Balatro all seem like fantastic candidates to me. And given their stupid rules FF and Elden Ring does as well.

The only strange nomination is Black Myth of Wukong. All others have amazing review averages of 90+.

I'm sure there's been way worse years.

This was not a shit year for games. It was an excellent one.

But that list is certainly shit.

Edit: I'll give mine, and no an expansion pack doesn't count for me.

Wukong
Silent Hill 2
Dragon's Dogma 2
Visions of Mana
Tekken 8
Helldivers 2

It crazy that indy and Stalker 2 are cut off.

Probably better to move the Award show to januari (if it was as a actual legitimate award show and not a commercial grift)

Not sure which of those won but It Takes Two is a phenomenal game. Definitely the best out of that lot.

2021 was a bad year for games. This has been pretty good so far. I have idea how anyone can look back on 2024 and think it was a bad year for gaming. PS5 especially had a really good year.

Would be better if the awards were in January/February but then it would not have the Christmas impact ion sales which is why I assume they are when they are.

Could easily be my game of the year!

I must be living in some parallel timeline cause this year has gotten plenty of great games and if anything my backlog keeps increasing.

Either IGN only pays attention to GTA-level releases or something has to be up. Or my tastes are just all over the place maybe.

That said...he IS right...the GOTY nominations ARE weird. But not because the year got less titles to choose from. The fact they feel the need to include a Sony DLC for Elden Ring ( 👀 ) says it all to me.

It has not been a bad year at all. The games they chose for the category are questionable.

I'd have had:

Astrobot
Metaphor Refantazio
Final Fantasy Rebirth
Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth (Balatro)
Silent Hill 2 (Wu Kong)
Helldivers 2 (Fucking dlc)

Seems like they scrambled to try and get some western representation into the categories and also this must be in December to try and pump some last minute christmas sales hence 'having a cutoff for release dates'

I know he's an Xbox shill, but he's right. Horrible list.

This is what makes it a horrible list. Plenty of good games have come out, but it is not reflected in the list.

It is all about personal preferences. I look at that list and I also see a pretty kickass year. Others, not so much.

It's kind of a pointless thing to say without offering up your alternatives. Unless your argument is just "2024 bad!" — which is dumb and wrong.

Hah, talking like flight sim 2024, indy and stalker 2 (that one at a push, maybe) would be in the running

I do think either Stellar Blade or Helldivers 2 should have been in there instead of DLC though

Yeah, sure, personal opinions and all, but it's more than a little funny that this is from the guy that works at the outlet that gave most of these games a 9. Best year ever? On a score level no, but bad enough to post a complaint? No fucking way.
