IGN Sonic Rush Final Build Preview + Videos

The new design also introduces a very "extreme games" style move system where players can pull off special moves to score additional points and to boost power. These moves can be pulled off with button and D-pad combinations while leaping in the air as well as grinding on some rails. This element really puts the Sonic 3D model through its paces, because it would be tough to offer the same move set through animated sprites.

And, of course, there's the dual screen aspect. The development team use the two screens as one display -- it's not the first time this technique's been used for a Nintendo DS game, as titles like Metroid Prime Pinball and Bomberman have beaten Sonic Rush to the punch. The added screen increases the vertical real estate of the levels so players can explore high and low, and the camera system does a great job keeping track of the hedgehog and follows him from screen to screen with very little disorientation placed on the gamer. The boss battles are relegated to a single screen, but the developers push the Nintendo DS system's 3D capabilities much harder in these instances to build some very creative bad guys to fight.

The dual screen aspect also disappears when players jump into the single cartridge multiplayer race. Here, players can choose either Sonic or Blaze the Cat and compete to race through any of the unlocked levels in the game. The upperscreen is the gamer's view, with the lower screen keeping track of where the opponent's running. To cut back on processing time, the 3D model of the opposing player is removed in favor of a much more simple icon that plots the point on the map where the competition is in the level. The multiplayer version doesn't slow down compared to the single player outing, playing just as fast and exaggerated as the solo adventure.

Wow, looking great! Man I'm really starting to like these 2.5 games showing up on DS lately, the system's library is really coming on it's own.

Bring on new videos of Super Mario Bros and we're set.

DS ROCKS!

That looks extremely fun. I seriously can't wait for this! Doesn't it come out sometime in November?

The music actually seems catchy this time (unlike other recent GBA Sonic titles...) too. Though, the level design and look reminds me more of the Advance titles...which isn't a great thing, but we'll see.

Technically, they are better, but I still feel that the visuals look wrong. The Genesis games just have a look that no other 2D Sonic title has managed to match. Not only that, the backgrounds are dead simple here while the Genesis games were always known for shit-tons of parallax (which was extremely awesome looking).

Still, I'm very excited for the game.

Were any of the Sonic Advance games good?

People will try and tell you that they were. They were shit though. I mean, they might've been decent had the Megadrive/Genesis Sonics not existed, but really, they are so utterly and completely inferior in every way that I honestly cannot see how people could enjoy them - unless they've never played a megadrive Sonic.

Sonic Rush looks like a mix of the two to me...the art design kind of sucks (ala Advance), and looks nowhere near as cool as the Megadrive Sonics, but the level design and thus gameplay looks a lot better IMO. SO I'm expecting a very good Sonic game, but still no Sonic 1/2/3/Knuckles.

Is it just me or does the Sonic 2 special stage look better than the Rush special stage?

Wow. Definitely just you.

That video is insane it looks extremely fast and very fun. The trick system sounds amazing. Isn't this the first 2D sonic made by Sonic Team since the 16-bit days?

No, Sonic Team did Sonic Advance 2. Though not 1 or 3, apparently.

He and me ;) I find the original to have a better color palette, a lot more charming. Of course, that's talking about these screens. Maybe Rush has other designs, and of course it is easier to do the job with polygons than with that pseudo-scaling...

I can see why you might think that, but the DS will look loads better in motion. The DS stage is full 3D and likely runs at 60 fps while the Genesis version was fake-3D and the pipe moved at like 5 fps. :P

Oh why are they launching this the same day as MarioKart?? They could sell so much more if they waited a couple weeks. I can't afford to buy all of these games and a wireless router in one week :(

Okay, maybe I can understand the sentiment from a mere colorful point of view, but the Sonic 2 special stages were choppy, fake 3D, horribly pixellated, etc. The Rush special stage looks loads better. Will it be as fun? That remains to be seen :)

Sega.

Sonic fans seem to be divided on the issue. Though I haven't heard any claim SA games are better than Genesis Sonics.

I can see what you're saying. Sonic Rush is obviously technically superior with the 3D its pushing, but the lack of novelty in the stage and the choices of colors and design in those particular photos are not very aesthetically pleasing. Sonic Team obviously cut corners in this part of the game.

What he said.

Thank goodness for PSP1.5 :D

You would think that Sega would have learned from launching Monkey Ball 2 the same day as Mario Sunshine and having it get shitty first month sales that they wouldn't go toe to toe with a big Nintendo release anymore but I guess its just Sega being Sega.

To me, remove the boss stages and spacial stages and Sonic Rush looks like Sonic Advance, in both looks and gameplay.

The Sonic Team label is thrown around on this game like Miyamoto's name is on some Nintendo games, as if it makes all the difference. People forget Sonic Team have lost their touch for a while and their involvement is no guarantee of quality.

I certainly agree that the look of the game seems off and the soundtrack, so far, is appaling.
