9.0 Presentation
Though it's just a bit of a bummer to get a port for Mario's first DS adventure, it's anything but "just a port." They've added so much to an existing design.
8.5 Graphics
A very solid display of the system's capabilities. It looks far better on the DS than it did on the N64, even without texture filtering.
8.5 Sound
Great conversions of the original Nintendo 64 soundtrack, with fantastic sound separation that shows off the DS' abilities...even without headphones you can hear where someone's located on-screen.
9.0 Gameplay
Without an analog stick, a near-perfect game like Mario 64 just becomes "great, just a little frustrating." The additional cool little touch-screen games bump up the score.
9.5 Lasting Appeal
There are a ton of level challenges, mini-games to unlock, and multiplayer competition using only one cartridge. Keep this one with you at all times, because it'll last a long, long time.
8.9
OVERALL:
(out of 10 / not an average)

The Nintendo DS version does everything it sets out to do: demonstrate nearly every one of the new system's capabilities. Super Mario 64 DS' shows of that the system's significantly more powerful than the Nintendo 64 in both graphics and audio, at least as a first-generation title. It also pushes the system's touch screen functions, though many of these additions feel like supplements than they are important, integral elements to the game design. But they certainly are welcome, and definitely increase the value of an already great title.

great :)

Seriously though; their ONLY complaint is the controls, and they seem to consider it a minor one, since they still gave gameplay a 9. A very positive review.

You know what would have been awesome?

A brand new 3D platformer with Mario in the vein of Mario 64 for the DS launch.

That's what this is.
No it is not.

If you are going to port the games, port the engines and make a 'new' games. I will bomb NOA if they port OOT. Just make a new games witht he engine.

Have you played Super Mario 64 before?

Also, why does it seem Nintendo is so adverse at giving portables a brand new Mario title?! They are running out of games to port...!!!

If the entire game of Super Mario 64 was stripped out of Super Mario 64 DS and they just left the bunch of new levels with all the minigames and the multiplayer, it would probably get a more positive reaction from you people.

I could have sworn I just said I thought that would be awesome. :P

A game with all new levels? Shut up, really? I only heard of that in fables, never in real life.

Damn, this sucks. This is the first game I've ever wanted to do a reader review for and can't 'cause the site won't let me right now.

The main draw of this awesome title is its wealth of mini-games. I've found myself ditching the missions in favor of playing some "Wanted". And I had the chance to try multiplayer today, which became a crowd favorite due to the crazy "brawl" Mario brother fights. It was fun as hell laughing and yelling at IHOP at 2 in the morning.

So this new hardware makes one of the top games of all time, that was a joy to play and control, "a little frustrating". Some of you will buy into anything. New software is meant to showcase new hardware, yet here we have a new system showing that it's controls are inferior to an eight year old controller.

Memories light the corner of my mind.
Misty water color memories
Of the way we were.

Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind,
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were.

Can it be that it was all so simple then,
Or has time rewritten every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again,
Tell me? would we? could we?
Memories may be beautiful and yet,
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget.
So it's the laughter
We will remember,
Whenever we remember
The way we were;
The way we were.

This is one of the biggest lies I have ever read. Look at how crappy it looks!! =[

To me Super Mario DS looks like a very old video of the N64 version.

You shouldn't use blown-up screenshots to judge graphical quality. Watch the vids IGN has.

Good score. Nintendo really should've given the DS texture filtering support, tho. If it weren't for that there'd be no question that SM64DS looks better than the original.

True, but then people would've complained that the DS is all blurry (like the N64). So for GAF it makes no difference :)

too bad it's only 30fps.

Hmm im pretty sure that online sites said it was 60fps, it was metroid hunter that was 30. Anyway, i just got back home with a DS and mario 64, i guess i'll figure out myself in a few minutes :D

Maybe its the smaller screen, better framerate, or improved models and animation, but I think the DS version looks far better.

Just caved in. Bought DS and Super Mario 64 DS, especially after my sister begged me.

Impressions:

Adventure Mode: fucking horrible; controls really do suck, mostly because of the lack of 360 directions, not because of the lack of pressure sensitivity

Mini-games: very, very fun; the little sling-shot game alone could've been turned into a full game and -- for a cheap price -- I probably would've bought it

You are a moron if you think the N64 version looks better. Don't judge it off of screenshots - actually play the fucking game - and you'll see that it's a huge improvement.

Controls take a little getting used to. I'm using standard with the analog strap.

Yeah, it definitely looks better than the N64 version. I thought it looked ugly from screens too; in motion you won't believe it.

The biggest problem with the motion is the screen themselves. They just don't refresh quickly enough or something. It's obviously better than the GBA screen, but it makes games with even fast framerates look like they're going slower.

Try the thumbstrap. It will take a little while to get used to but it is better than the digital pad.

hey can we have some photos? It's hard to believe that you bought a DS :lol

I've got the game. The controls aren't bad, at all really. I'll say an analog stick is definitely preferable but I'm still getting around just fine.

Nice graphics.

Is this mode used specifically with the thumbstrap or something? I thought I might be able to use my finger or something.

Also: when you start up your system, can you just use your finger to get passed the health warning? I ask because I haven't been able to do so; I HAVE to use the stylus for that for some reason.

You could use the stylus in touch mode, but the thumbstrap works much, much better. Your finger isn't working because the screen isn't detecting the pressure, since the stylus is so much smaller. Try using your fingernail. You could also just press a button.
