IGNs review of the movie "Free Guy"

Darklor01

Might need to stop sniffing glue

..."While Guy is fighting for his love and life, the real-world characters are bumbling through an unfunny plot that allows none of its stars to shine."...

"Verdict:
Free Guy delivers a first hour that is outrageously entertaining, stuffed with gonzo action, goofy gags, star power, big ideas, and plenty of Easter Eggs for lovers of movies and video games. However, in its second half, the joyful journey is derailed by a slog of a side quest, falling short of the potential set-up. Still, Ryan Reynolds delivers riotously rollicking fun in an eye-popping, imaginative environment that treats gaming like the wonderland it is. So, even with its deeply wonky detour, Free Guy is a wild ride worth the price of admission."

I will see this, and I will love this, despite IGNs track record of knowing exactly what things everyone will love and avoid.

I like RR, But he's just deadpool now, and plays the same character in most of his movies

Thought it was really good and I loved the philosophical part of this movie being front and center. Sure it's no Matrix trilogy in complexity but there is a good lesson in here that goes even beyond what the movie is trying to say - I'm thinking of that scene (which is in the trailers) where the best friend cops says something to the effect of the moment being real is what matters. I think society today is really selfish and dismissive of experiences of others and people are looking to judge based on the lens of their own lives. Like, some things have meaning to people that makes no sense to others - and that's OK.

Beyond that I thought the movie was standard Ryan Reynolds funny like Deadpool or Pikachu. One of the better "popcorn movies" of the year.

Maybe it’s the other way round, and the sort of person he is works well for Deadpool. Still wouldn’t give him tons of range, but at least he’d be himself.

As for the movie, I like RR and Taika and that’s enough to watch this.

Can't stand Ryan Reynolds on all levels, whether it's his acting with the emotional depth of a goldfish or the fact he's a complete dudebro who acts like he's still in college. Doesn't help he has a punch-able face to boot.

This is pretty much how I felt about him until Deadpool. Now he is just deadpool to me.

My review of the movie is that it was meh. This movie could have easily steered into love story comedy and I honestly think it should have went there instead of what we got which was a mixture of comedy, action, espionage, and love story not mixed together very well. The movie isn't great but I did enjoy it. Felt like a pretty good netflix movie. The majority of the jokes weren't that funny, it isn't really a video game movie but a movie set in a video game world if that makes sense, several plot holes, and it was more comedy than action. I don't think I could recommend someone seeing it in theaters.

Just came back from watching, and honestly - it was better than I was expecting.

Most of the reviews seem to dislike that the second half of the film focuses more heavily on real-world characters/events, but given the run-time they definitely needed more than just a fish-out-of-water comedy and the real-world characters and plot were genuinely interesting and quite a fun hot-take on the videogame industry, I was more invested in the real world stuff than the videogame events due to the characters being more grounded.

The film wasn't quite as flat out funny as I was expecting, it's really an action/romance film with a few jokes thrown in; but the last 30 minutes really brought it home and had some great things I would love to talk about but can't due to spoilers, let's just say Ryan Reynolds must have really pulled some strings, and to avoid spoilers/reviews if you intend on watching it.

If I had to nit-pick I would say Ryan Reynolds as an NPC just quite doesn't work, he plays a generic nice-guy with funny one-liners all the time and so on paper you would think yup, perfect casting. But the whole point of the film is he evolves beyond being just an NPC, and yet Reynolds plays the same character throughout the entire film, would of been better to have an actor who could have done a better job of portraying Guy evolving as a character.

Channing Tatum was fucking awesome, cinema was cracking up at his parts.

watched it earlier today. it has some flaws but overall it's a fun and enjoyable movie, especially if you're into/like the current gaming ecosystem. there's a couple surprising cameos in there that got a chuckle out of me and they put some well known streamers in there just for those flash commentary roles, so I'm fine with it for the most part. a solid 80~85 out of 100.

Finally caught this movie at the theater and thought it was a fun movie, but as others have said not as flat out a comedy as I was expecting. The biggest laughs are a flawless cameo and some of the stuff happening in the background. Got a feeling you would see more with a rewatch. I thought the real world stuff was fine but that might just be because of Jodie Comer. And yeah - streamers can't even act for shit as themselves doing their own streaming.

Watched this today. It’s insulting how Hollywood views games. But then you realize the story is the same as Tron’s and then it’s just offensive.

And IGN has no business reviewing this movie. They’re featured in it.

Enjoyed it for what it is. Quietly fun and carried by a good cast.

It's a zoomer remake of Tron.

Evil corporation steals the source code for an indie dev's video game and hides it inside another video game and they have to find that code to expose the evil corporation to become rich game developers.

Except it doesn't have the visuals or soundtrack of Tron. Instead it's another movie made by Hollywood who doesn't play video games and is just a vehicle for cameos from both famous people (Channing Tatum, The Rock, Hugh Jackman, Tina Fey) and people who want to be famous (Twitch streamers, IGN on-air people). If Jodie Comer weren't in it, there'd literally be no reason to suffer through it, unless you enjoy Ryan Reynolds being Deadpool without the suit.

Watched about 30 minutes of it before I turned it off. Absolute horseshite with a bunch of boring stereotypes and lame jokes. Gives video games a bad rep.

This movie was so trash. I can’t believe how many people recommended me this movie. Ryan Reynolds is just not funny to me anymore. I probably laughed once. My 12 year old even though it was trash and he seems to like every movie.

I really enjoyed the movie, good dumb fun. I thought Taika Waititi was the worst part of it, his acting was so bad I cringed.

Kinda why I enjoyed it, Comer and Reynolds. The plot was ehh and the video game elements didn't really bug me despite it being a 50/60 years old person's view of modern video games.

I really want to meet Ryan Reynolds so I can ask him to get his brother-in-law to sign my night of the creeps Blu-ray.
