IGN's Top 100 Games 2005

Wow I'm surprised that FFVII is that low too. I don't know if it deserves to be higher just because it was such a memorable game though. I mean it was memorable cause it was the first really big rpg from this gen and that's kinda it.

You sure about that? I personally wouldn't make such a bold comment until I've seen Advent Children and tried Dirge of the Cerberus & Crisis Core. For all we know these will turn out to be great projects that build upon the original foundation. Kitase has been saying back since 1997 that the original story that himself and Nojima wrote for FFVII was much more expansive and they didn't get a chance to 'finish' Cloud's story for the actual game...

naturally many fans at the time misunderstood the whole 'FFVII incomplete' comment as somehow soley meaning 'Aeris resurrection'. That always baffled me. "IT'S NOT CUMPLETE BECASE ORIGINALY THE CREATORS WERE GUNNA PUT IN A WAY TO BRING AERITHE BACK!"

I'm like an old man that just starts rambling off into a whole different direction :D
Bottom line, I don't think it's fair to claim these FFVII projects going on now will automatically 'ruin' the original before any of them (except that damn cell phone prequel) are released.

Well I was counting just the normal FF games (VII, VIII, IX, X, etc). Some people mightve interpreted it as including FFOnline, X2, and Tactics. I just put that there so I wouldnt face the BUT WHAT ABOUT FFX2 crowd.

Dunno...a couple years ago I would of placed FF7 in the top 20 games...but the game hasn't aged well at all. It's so hard to play through the game with the graphics and random encounter system. Still think it was landmark game back in 1997 though.


FF7 needs remade.

I have nothing bad to say about any of these... 7 of the first 20 listed would surely be in my top 100 of all time... I can't assault this list too much. :D

Except Mario is not ancient in it's simplicity. I mean, sure, it's simple, but it's just as well brilliant. Still incredibly fun as well. I find myself going back to play it every once in a while and it's never been outdated yet. It's still the classic that redefined videogames, and the game that everyone has played. It's just insane to think how many people had that game in their household or played it at someone else's house. If you haven't, you're a sick person.

Anyway, alright list, but wtf is up with MGS3 not being on it? Honestly, that's disgusting. I'd say it's top 10 personally. Complete injustice.
 
I could really do without these Top 10/100/whatever lists. If sites want to make list-esque features, I'd like to see stuff that comes out of leftfield, not just another "Shucks, here's list of 100 games that we really like". Give something like "The 10 Best Games to Combine Spandex and Crotch Shots" and we may be on to something. :)
 
I think ff7 is right where it belongs. It's my 2nd least favorite numbered ff (besides 11.) It's not a "bad game" but it's just so.... meh, and "meh" just doesn't cut it as a ff game when there are so much better ones (3-6, 10)
 
what i think is bad is prince of persia sands of time being on that list, a good game, but I played it right aftger ninja gaiden and was underwhelmed after such a incredible experience with NG. For me POP sands of time is one of the most overated games this generation.
 
What's the top ten? I'm at work behind a content filter and can't get around it the way I usually do because IGN has a stupid splash ad I can't click through.

My few problems with this list are

Burnout 3 Takedown - Doesn't deserve to be on this list at all.
Metroid Prime - Should be somewhere in the 20's
GTA 3 - 90's maybe...
Ico - 40's
Prince of Persia Sands of Time - Not on this list at all. It is a great game but not good enough.
Sid Meire - The love is good. But maybe a little to much of it.
Resident Evil 4 - 20's
God of War - 30's
Banjo Koozie/Tooie - Anyone...
Rayman 2 The Great Escape - 80's

There is more but I don't want to name it all. This is a great list overall though. I love that they are giving oldschool games some love. Probably 90% of this list is right. Plus the fact that Grim Fandango and Sam and Max are both on there is so totally awesome.

SMB is more than just nostalgia, it kick started a new era in console gaming.
 
Chrono Trigger being the highest RPG on the list = good.

But, who the heck wrote the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night description? It sounds totally different from the rest of the descriptions and seems like some fan wrote it for them.

" It could even be argued that this game is better than its 3D successor, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence."

I haven't played LoI, but I thought the general consensus (like, 95% who have played both games) is that SotN is in a whole different league than LoI.
 
Why oh why is there always so many bloody sports games in these lists. Espcially when it leaves out absolute classics like Majora's Mask, Earthbound, Starfox, Pikmin, any one of the great games starring Donkey Kong, Shining Force 3, Nights, Treasure classics like Guradian Heroes or Radiant Silvergun. But yeah, leaving out Majora is just wrong, I mean they managed to fit in 4 Final Fantasy games... But at least props to them for putting Waverace pretty high up on the list.
