Yeah I used to force myself to finish games even when I was no longer having fun with them.

Been doing that for a quite some time. And yeah, it's a real eyeopener if you've discovered "this newfound freedom" after having been unknowingly bound. I also do it with games overly addictive.

In the book world, they call this "DNF'ing" a book. DNF = Did not finish.

I do that all the time with books, videos, and games.

I read once that only about 20% of readers finish a book. I think the percentage is similar for games.
 
Wait till you get to the final phase, where you can see a game is just more of the same before launch and you simply don't play it all.

The money and time ive saved to do other stuff. Nothing of value was lost for not playing ac shadows this year 🤣 if anything my life is better for it
 
I'm getting better at it. I've put down more games this year than I would have in the past.

Time is the only currency that truly matters. Just want to be careful that I still give the games I play a fair shake before dropping them
 
Feeling forced to beat a shitty game sounds horrifying, glad you managed to get rid of that sentiment.

That's good news OP.

Hopefully you don't come to a point in the future where you make a thread asking people how to focus on just one game.

That seems to be the biggest issue when people constantly drop games, as doing it sort of activates the same attention span issues that a lot of social media scrolling activates already.
 
Started doing that more this year. Replayed Lies of P to prepare for the DLC and I only made it to the first boss of that. Was just tired of it. Same for Oblivion Remastered. 17 hours in and decided to just put it down for good despite having fond memories of the original (nostalgia is a hell of a drug).

Started Pacific Drive, Amnesia: The Bunker, Dying Light: The Beast, and Nine Sols this year, playing for a few hours of each before quitting. Wasn't feeling them. Deleted quite a few games from my Steam Library that I will just never play.

Completionist, Backlogs, hardest difficulty. Who cares? Im here for whatever is fun and enjoyable, not a chore. If i do all that and im having fun- great, otherwise its a mix.

I'm the same these days. I literally just had this with Ghost of Yotei last week. I had a lot of fun with it, but when I got to around the 15-16 hour mark and realised I still had probably 15-20 hours of game left, I dropped it and moved on as the repetition started to really set in.

I don't really think those type of open world games are for me at this stage as they are just too long and I have too much else going on. I'm finding that 15-20 hours is the sweet spot for game length for me personally when playing single player games. I can make some exceptions for RPGs depending on how good the game itself is.

Actually, to be honest, when I was into achievements and trophies, I found it difficult to put down a game if it was bad. Going after those pop ups and points really had a negative effect for me. Games I enjoyed playing became annoying because I had to play them in a way that took so much joy away, just for the trophy or games I really disliked I would force myself to continue to get at least the game completed pop up.
Breaking free from that way so liberating and now as a full time pc gamer, I can play or put down a game so much easier without a second thought.

In a medium flooded with options and amazing games to play I can't be bothered with meh or just ok games. I'll play them sure but not complete. It's all a waste of time in the grand scheme but I want to be having the most fun possible with that wasted time.
 
My buddy is in his 40's and still needs to finish a game he starts. He's absolutely miserable lol

I'll drop a game when I get bored with it and move onto something else.

My value in a game is the anticipation + hype + enjoyment. And if I chat about it with friends or you guys on here, that adds to it.

Whether I play it a few times for a few hours or drop 100 hours, as long as I had fun, I don't care how much money I put into it or how long I played it.

I stopped looking at my backlog as a backlog. It's just my library of games that interested me and I'll pick up and play whatever fits the mood.

Get a game your interested in, take a timer and set it for your current age. If you dont like or interested in the game by timer goes off move on.
Or subtract your age from an hour so the older you are, the less time you have to mess around with something you don't like.

I prefer the journey anyway, not the ending, which is why i like immersive games that i can get lost in the world of older open world games, i only did 2 of New Vegas's endings after that i would just restart once i was near the point of no return and do different things in the next playthrough, also a lot of endings are a bit disappointing now for me.
 
Sometimes it's hard after you paid 70 bucks for it. I wanted to quit spiderman 2 after the first MJ segment, but forced myself to complete it because of the price.

That's why I always buy physical unless the game is cheap or digital only: if the game is shit, you can always sell it.

Sucks to be you then. You lack discipline, but thats ok. Luckily, most people finish what they start else society would be doomed.

Same. I train my patience, pain endurance and masochistic side of me while dragging myself through horrible games just to earn some trophies that aren't even real. But I'm also an unemplyed loser so my lifetime ain't worth shit anyway.
 
In terms of completing games 100% side quests no, I get the OP's point but this is where we separate, that's just pathetic not finishing a Zelda game, and I'll call out anyone, you got a 20-30 ocarina of time game that you can't finish? You're looking for an easy exit? Games like last guardian, horizon have puzzles, collecting, I question people who can't finish those types of games.

I've always been like that. if a game doesn't hook me enough to push through finishing it, I move on. And I don't mean as in I reach a hard part that I can't pass, I mean if the basic hook, gameplay loop and/or story doesn't encourage me to keep going.

What sucks or doesn't suck is up to you, but he's saying he will force himself through even mid games.

If I love and have fun with let it die, then that's not a waste of time. If I am not liking dying light the beast do I need to keep playing it?
