I'm moving to LA in two weeks. Any advice?

It's the economy.. up here in San Jose I'm renting a 2-bedroom house for $1200. Why? They bought in December 2007 for $200,000 more than the house is now worth. They were hoping to tear it down and build two houses on the plot but couldn't get financing.

Geez where are you that you're paying $1200 for a 2 bedroom house?

My girlfriend and I split rent on a 2 bedroom in Mar Vista/Venice/Culver City area and the cost for each of us is $1000 ($2000 total) and that was after we talked the price down. I've seen other houses in our area for the same price.

We'd kill to live somewhere in the same area that cost us less than a grand a piece.

No mention of Arclight and the Cinerama Dome? Come on LA GAF!

When you want to catch a flick that is the place to go... reserved seating and 21 and over screenings with your favorite drink or cocktail.

Also be sure to check out The Griddle Cafe off of Sunset Blvd. for some amazing pancakes and french toast, their lunch menu is pretty amazing as well.

And be sure to try some tacos from LA's all too famous roach coaches (best tacos in town for cheap), there is one in Pasadena that is really good... I'll pass on the location when I figure out the cross streets. And there is always the all too trendy Kogi BBQ truck, you can check them out on twitter for where they will be on a given day.

Eh I go to the Bridge at the HH Center for movies. It's closer than the Arclight.

Speaking of fail, you don't want to seek out the Kogi BBQ truck via twitter and wait in line 1-2 hours for it. It's not worth it. Go to the Alibi Room outside of a Friday or Saturday night. You'll get the same food without the wait. You can also hit up the Kalbi truck for another take on Korean BBQ tacos in Westwood without wasting your life in line.

What's the Alibi room like? It's a 5 minute or so walk from my house and I've been considering it just for some over priced spam sliders.

Evergreen, just off of Aborn Road in San Jose. It's miraculous really, a house like mine should rent for about $1800, but they know it has some serious problems (like non-grounded electric service in the kitchen, though the plugs are at least GFCI's), they know the economy is in the shitter, and they know just about anyone with a college education can afford $1200 a month.

Well, I've moved. Though I'm liking LA thus far, I didn't realize that a freeway could be as bad as the 405. Holy shit.

The 405 is the worst freeway in the country and one of the worst in the world. I happened to be awake at 2 am last night and checked Google live traffic.. there was a 5-mile stretch of slowdown over the Sepulveda Pass even then.

Sonarrat: Your theory about my low-rent as a result of the economy was correct. Landlord told me that I'm paying a few hundred dollars less than everyone else in my building. Neat.

Also, Brentwood sucks, Santa Monica is fine, but Westwood is great. It's within walking distance of my apartment, so I see myself hanging out there often (and hopefully getting a job there before long).

I've been in L.A. for about three months now (from a small town in the South). I live in East L.A. & spend a lot of time in the Hollywood area. Some things I've learned:

1. If you don't have one already, invest in a GPS. You can find a refurbished Garmin Nuvi for less than $100. You will save tanks of gas by not getting lost & be able to find anywhere in the city on no notice with no problem.

2. Use said GPS to take roads that are not the freeway. As you've discovered, the 405 is terrible & I swear it's gotten worse even since I've been here (or maybe it's just lately. L.A. vets--is something going on? Just this time of year?). I have to be in Westwood all the time--it's twelve miles from my house & it took me an hour & ten minutes to get there today in the middle of the fucking afternoon. Previously, I'd been able to get there in 30 minutes.

3. You're decently close to Santa Monica. Check out the chess beach there if you're into that; nice chill place to hang out in the sun & play chess. I'm not a chess player, but it's a nice vibe.

4. The tap water is fine.

5. The price of beer is ridiculous. Happy hour is not happy at all, even beers like PBR are too much at the store. However, cheap wine is super cheap wine out here. I've been switching to wine lately--you can get a variety at Trader Joe's or Fresh & Easy for $2-$4.

6. Become VERY familiar with the parking laws (colored curbs, not parking in front of certain things, street cleaning rules, etc.). Coming from a place where we don't really park in the street, I've been hit with two expensive tickets already. Always have quarters in your car for meters.

7. Grab L.A. Weekly if you see it around. Free to take, always full of neat events, good reading for on the shitter.

8. Learn to love the 99 Cent Only stores.

9. If you're a media nerd like many GAF people, Amoeba is a wonderful place for music & film. It's a drive for you, but Game Dude in North Hollywood is a pretty damned decent game store.

Of course, a lot of this advice is based on having a good time while saving money, but it sounds like you're sort of loaded anyway. L.A. can be a mean place if you're used to stress-free small towns, but find the pockets of the city that have welcoming vibes to you (there are plenty) & take comfort in the fact that there is ALWAYS, ALWAYS something to do out here, always an adventure to be had. Anything you need, this city has it.

Edit: Avoid the 405 during hours when most normal human beings are awake.
How do you tell the difference between someone from Northern California and someone from Southern Califorina. If they say 'take 101 or take 280' the are fro the north, if they say 'take the 101 or the 405' they are from the south.

california is on the verge of an economic collapase and the only thing you fools can advise is drugs, music, and videogames. how about gtfo of LA before shtf!!! when are you gamers going to put down the VIDEOGAMES and wake up to REALITY. look around you, obama is a fraud, the economy is worsening everyday. bank robberies every day, closed supermarkets. gtfo before its to late mang.

2 buck Chuck is great stuff. I like the Merlot and the Chard.

And make sure your car has a front license plate. They'll ticket you for only having a back plate. That shows how much they try to nail you for stupid shit. As if you are going to rob a bank and then try to escape in reverse.

Used to be that the SoCal freeways had names, too. The Ventura (101), San Diego (405), the Santa Monica (10). I'm actually hearing that more in the north now. I hear people refer to the Eastshore (I-80), the Central Freeway (part of 101), the Nimitz (I-880)..

Oh shut the fuck up and chill out. Most states are in economic collapse . . . we just look worse because we are bigger state and we have a very dysfunctional state legislature of Republicans that refuse to raise a penny in taxes and Democrats that do cut a lot of stuff but not enough and are unable to get the Republicans to help out by at least raising taxes a little bit. It will all work out in the end.

Wait. The fuck? I had no idea this rule existed; I've been here for several months now...

I'm not sure if they're allowed to ticket me for that as long as I keep my Florida plate, though. Which might in itself be illegal, but whatever.
