I'm not a racing fan, but my summer racing movie binge has me interested in attention a major racing event someday. Has anyone here ever attended one?

And what was the experience like? And do you think someone who has no interest in racing at all as a sport could enjoy it for the experience? Or should only people who are interested in racing go?

It seems like a really cool spectacle to witness in person. Not sure how seeing it live compares to other sports though.

When Global Rallycross was around i went to an event up in Seattle at the Dirtfish complex. Was a really fun experience. That was when they had the local / B drivers too which was cooler than i expected.

It wasnt as viewable as the TV coverage, but MUCH more surreal and grass roots feeling. Seeing the cars and noises and dirt flying around in real time was rad. Also you could walk through the pits / staging. So when a factory supported subbie of fiesta rumbled through, you were right there.

i think racing is exactly the thing the real thing isn't like the movies....seeing as how the movie frames it all with a dramatic narrative where the racing is just the vehicle for the story, and there's no conspiracy spy stuff going on behind it. all you're going to be doing is drinking beer and watching the weather

I don't follow any racing and I went and saw a NASCAR race at Talladega last year and had a blast. That track is insanely massive if you've never been. It's basically the size of a small city. My advice if you go is to pick someone to root for and pay attention to the announcer if possible. I was lost when some things happened but the announcer explained it pretty well.

If you do a NASCAR race just be prepared for how damn loud it is. There's a reason tons of people are wearing hearing protection.

One last thing… not being a fan, don't buy expensive tickets. The view is decent wherever you are, at least at NASCAR speedways.

I've been a racing fan since 1998 and I've attended many events all over the world. If you want some advice, feel free to ask me anything.

I've been to a few NASCAR events and I thought they were pretty boring
I know next to nothing about racing, but I thought for me anyway, something like the Daytona 500 would be boring because it's just a bunch of drivers going around an oval track over and over. But I know Daytona is incredibly popular so obviously racing fans love it. But I think for me to have a chance to get into it, it would have to be more elaborate and interesting tracks. I don't think they usually race those in Nascar though, but I could be wrong. Again, I know almost nothing about the sport.

:goog_love: Are those your pics? Beautiful, in any case.

As for me, the extent of my track-side experience is limited to 1000 years ago, when I used to go to the Molson Indy (I guess Indianapolis 500 basically) in TO since we got free pit passes through connections at work. I didn't really follow the meta, but there's something to be said for actually being there and feeling the sheer noise and power of it. I lived on the Quay at the time so I'd be hearing it whether I went to the stands or not but I guess it got cancelled as an event due to noise complaints a few years after I left :(

Nowadays I love the Rally aesthetic, but it's one of those things that's probably best enjoyed via broadcast/stream since the strategic layer is probably hard to grasp from the bleacher POV.

The beauty of an oval is you keep seeing the cars over and over. On a long elaborate track, you only see them when they're right near you and doesn't happen as much.

So one is more boring for racing but more exciting because you see the cars more often. The other is more fun racing but you don't see the cars as much.

Both have their perks. I've only been to a monster truck rally in person.

Been to plenty, the thing is that a film is a film, the actual events have lots of downtime and minor races you might not care about. Also you might have to move around to find a fun corner or whatnot to view. And there's usually a car or two in early events that seem to be there to make noise not win so take ear protection for any kids.

I would advise doing a smaller local event before going all out on some super expensive package.

A few drag races which were super fun.

My folks have attended lots of NASCAR and a few f1 races and love them.

It's about more than the race with NASCAR they said, it's apparently has a huge tailgating aspect to it.

I've never been to a big national race/track. But we have a local small oval/figure 8 track in the area that I have been to may times. Very fun. Maybe check your area to see if there are local smaller venues/events. Tickets are cheap and it would allow you to check and see if live racing is something you would enjoy.

Years and years ago, I went to a big national race with a group and we set up on the infield. I got blackout drunk before half the race was done and fell asleep. After getting home, I slept for another 16 hours.

Does that help answer your question?

Think I went to see a rally when I was a kid and thats about it, wasnt super exciting at all since you can see only for a few seconds the actual race and then wait for minutes looking at nothing. It's better at home where you can keep track of the "action". Also less annoying people unless you count your wife/gf.
