I've never watched Tombstone before... but caught alot of it last night before we went out. Seemed really good from what I saw... and as much as I hated Val Kilmer as Batman... damn I liked him as Holliday.

How is the rest of the movie? I saw it up to where Earp shot the guys who came to kill him at the train, he killed that dere fella and yelled at him that hell was comin....

It's better than Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner. Kilmer's performance is great, and the rest of the cast does a good job. Movie manages to keep you interested all the way through with not alot of slow moving scenes.

Awesome movie. Try and watch te entire thing as soon as possible. It has only one small flaw which doesn't ruin the movie at all and I won't spoil it for you.

What do you think the small flaw is? I've seen the whole thing. Post it with spoiler tag.

One of the most quotable movies ever, IMO. My buddies and I saw it opening night (a couple of us are serious western fans) and we annoyed everyone we knew for months with our constant references. :lol

I think it's an excellent western, perhaps not a great movie in general (kinda long, lot of stuff crammed in) but the awesome performances and kickass action sequences have it high on my list of westerns.

I didn't like the whole romance between Earp and that singer and I hated the ending, thought it was pure cheese. Somehow the romance didn't feel right in that movie, not enough to hurt a great movie but I thought it might have been better without it.

One of my favorite quotes in the movie was:

"Why Johnny Ringo, you look like someone just walked over your grave"

C'mon man, Wyatt had to get some action other than gunplay just like everyone else! :lol I have to agree about the ending with the voiceover talking about Wyatt's funeral and how the actor cried...kinda cheesy.

Tombstone is the best western ever, and it's also one my favorite movies. Kilmer's "Doc Holiday" makes the movie. I guess you can equate it to Depp's "Jack Sparrow," except the rest of the cast in Tombstone is good as well.

Hey I agree the movie probably needed some sort of romance, but it was just awkward and not done very well. The best part of the movie was seeing that kid from 90210 acting like a total bitch in the movie though. Classic stuff!

Great movie Val Kilmer totally owned that movie. Great fucking character.

The ending was really fucking cheesy but every thing before that was stellar.
It came out at the same time as the Kevin kostner version and totally blew it away eventhough it was half the length.

Luckily Kostner made it us to everyone with the great "Open Range".

Hmm, I dunno about "best western ever" as all those old Clint Eastwood westerns are classics. It's a good western though.

Once Upon a Time in the West > The Good the Bad and the Ugly > Tombostone.
That said Tombstone rocks, especially Val Kilmer's perfect acting.

Once upon a time in the west would have been better had Clint played the lead role as opposed to Charles Bronson. I prefer all the Clint movies to Once....

Good Bad Ugly
Hang Em High
Fistfull of Dollars
Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Pale Rider

Great great movies.

Unforgiven is my Fav western ever. Clint Eastwood totally made me mark out at the end of the movie because of his badassness.

My private shame is that i still have not seen Good the bad and the ugly. Do i have to watch the first 2 movies in the trilogy to enjoy this one?

Hell no, there's no connection other than Clint is a badass who can kill with a fast gun. :lol

IIRC both of them are from the true historical events...

Not really, but you're untroduced to some of the characters in Fistful and Few Dollars More. I've yet to see Pale Rider. I love's me Clint.

Anyone who thinks Tombstone is the best Western ever is required to watch every Eastwood and Costner Western before opening their mouth again.

Required Western viewing before commenting on Tombstone again:

The Dollars Trilogy
Outlaw Josey Wales
Hang em High
Pale Rider
Unforgiven
Silverado
Wyatt Earp
Open Range

Kevin Costner? I think he should lose points for Wyatt Earp alone. That movie was boring and painful to watch. His wooden acting didn't help it at all.

I saw Once Upon a Time In the West last week and thought it was great. But is the no name trilogy and that the only westerns that Serio Leone did. It just hit me, Clint looks as nasty/badass as Lee Van Cleef does in that shot.

Yeah but the way they did the ending I thought was cheesy.
The voice-over was just too corny. I had nothing against the romance part of the movie.

Silverado and Open Range. Open Range is the best Western since Unforgiven. Also, Lonesome Dove should also be required viewing before commenting on Tombstone again.

I'm not a HUGE Western fan per se... but I've seen all the ones Eastwood has starred in... and they all rock.

Yea, no doubt about it. Kilmer steals the show and it's supposed to be the most realistic when regarding what really happened in that event and the events leading up to it.

You really should buy the DVD with the directors commentary to fully realize how much research went on to make such an accurate account of what happened at the time.

This was my favorite movie for a very long time after watching it, very well made and the end with Johnny Ringo Vs. Doc had me along with a few other of my guy friends just about jumping out of our skin.

Great stuff

Its a good movie.. but the best western ever? You people need to watch some classics.. butch cassidy and the sundance kid, the wild bunch, magnificent seven, man who shot liberty valance...

Val Kilmer was a bad ass though... but Steve McQueen is 10 times the bad ass anyone has ever thought about being.

Fuck I can't believe I forgot about Butch and Sundance! Great movie!

yea thats what i thought...i thought i was going crazy there for a second. Butch Cassidy and Sundance kid are great but i felt there were some parts that dragged in the middle.

Lonesome Dove is the greatest western of all time, if you're willing to lump TV, movies and miniseries all together. Blue Duck is the ultimate badass ever created for TV, no argument accepted.

I wish the forum went back a full year, I could just paste my list from the last time we had a "fav western" thread. :D

For movies:

1) A Fistfull of Dollars
2) Unforgiven
3) Open Range
4) Jeremiah Johnson
5) The Wild Bunch
6) Pale Rider
7) The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
8) Tombstone
9) Silverado
10) Once Upon a Time in the West

Man that's a tough list. If I did it again in a month at least 4 of the picks would move around and one or two might fall right off the top 10. About the only popular westerns I really don't like are Hang 'em High, Wyatt Earp and High Plains Drifter.

no, he was in magnificent seven.

Also, I like the man without a name trilogy too.. but spaghetti westerns dont count.. :p

Didnt like 'for a few dollars more'?

A Few Dollars More was pretty good, but for me it was merely good in comparison to Clint's other westerns. Good, but not top 10 level IMO, even though in some ways it surpassed A Fistful of Dollars the novelty was kinda gone. And yeah, I like Sanjuro a wee bit less than Yojimbo despite the fact Sanjuro is funnier and in some ways better crafted for much the same reason.

Unforgiven is still my favorite western though I remember Tombstone being pretty badass too. Fans of Fistful of Dollars should watch Yojimbo, both great movies but the original ending didn't leave you wondering about a headshot. Oh, and don't forget Blazing Saddles. :D

GREAT GREAT movie.

But yeah, Good Bad Ugly is my favorite. It's not as beautiful as Once Upon a Time in the West, but people die, everywhere. That's a winner to me...

Bah, High Noon is the best western ever.

The first time I saw it was when I was in high school (it was required watching for some reason) and I was rivited... it was very suspensful.

OUTW has tons of killing! And a lot of them aren't just killings, they're slaughters. Like when the whole family gets murdered in the beggining of the movie.

Who here has seen a Fistful of Dynamite? Is it any good?

Yeah, but it's killing that made sense. Not like GBU, heh.

And yeah, it also featured one of the baddest ass actors of all time. Next to Lee Marvin, of course.

I liked the original Young Guns much more than Tombstone.....Zod as Mr. Tunstall > a cool Val Kilmer. I also think it's a more quotable movie as well.

Amneziak

aka The Hound
High Noon was great. Also, you must see

The Ox-Bow Incident

Goin' South (Jack Nicholson is hilarious)

Dances with Wolves

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (maybe calling it a western is stretching it, but it has plenty of elements from the best of them; also Bogart is better in this than in Casablanca IMO)
