Images that represents next-generation

"why the assumption that great graphics = huge dev. timescales?"

I'm not entirely sure either.

Some things can be done almost instantly, like higher resolution, better filtering and whatnot. It will take more time to model things and make higher resolution textures, but then again, workstation computers are also advancing.

I hope to see some great implementation of evironmental effects...I want the air to have "weight" to it, I want it to have density...a mood and a presence to it. Same for water and smoke and fire, etc.

Sure, bigger worlds, more complex interactions will do that, but surely most of this level of character detail is being done this generation for cutscenes. If they aren't optimised for next-gen realtime, then adjust your artist workflow to make them optimised, then use the same artwork for renders and realtime stuff.

You could make a (flimsy) argument that says next gen art will be easier than this gen because you don't need two very different models.
No, but you do need a much larger volume of detailed assets, and you can't necessarily just N times the people at it and hope for it to get done, even if you've got the world's best art director.

OK, fair enough for some games - but something like Tekken 6 should be doable with the same rough budget and timescale as Tekken 5 - just use the hires models from the cutscenes

Tekken 1 CG :lol

What I like to see is something like the Gameboy Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages commercial -- The one with the snow and link climbing the castle. Btw does anybody know where I can find it? I just spent 30 minutes looking for it. >_<

I did find a good site for commercials though but they still didn't have it.

I can't say I understand the likes of Half-Life 2 pics being posted. If next gen machines are only producing graphics of top of the range PCs a year (or two) before, something's seriously fucked.

man, I totally agree with that. Half Life 2 looks like crap for nextgen. it might be acceptable as a first-gen Xbox 2 game, but come on.

ourumov: thank you for posting that Bruce Lee CG.

I expect (and demand) that games look photo realistic for the most part.

The problem is not with the graphics capabilities, but rather the animations and physics.

totall realism in games suck. I like the Resident Evil 4 look. and the new Zelda. just make it 20x better on nextgen consoles.

I hope for that level of graphics, 2 years after launch:

HA! To this day, FF:TSW still has some of the best human models ever. The old doctor was chillingly realistic. Then again, the old, wrinkled look worked to his advantage. If cutscenes on the most powerful system even get close to that by the end of this next generation, I'll eat my hat. I really don't expect that level of quality, but if it comes, I will welcome it with open arms. PEACE.

After seeing RE4's realtime cutscenes on GC, I think Revolution could handle MixCore's 'Rebirth'

Anyone who has seen all of Gamecube's realtime cutscenes in Resident Evil 4, and Gamecube's Rebirth CG FMV by MixCore, do you feel that Revolution could handle everything in Rebirth at least in realtime cutscenes and perhaps some parts as gameplay? the Gamecube has less performance than an ATI R200, the Radeon 8500. imagine what Revolution will be able to pull off in the right hands, with something better than the ATI R420 and perhaps even better than the R520, more or less on par with Xenon's R500?

I think that forests and a Mana Tree in a Sword of Mana game on Revolution could look like Rebirth.

imagine!

It's also a horrible example because HL's budget was 40 million? (Or was that the figure being bandied about in 2003... so add another year). As much as I loved HL2, I've played through it 3 times - when I usually bore of 95 percent of games before 1 completion, it's a horrible example of the future of the industry because of how much it cost to make.

some of the most fun games didn't cost much to make. I hope we see more lower budget but fun games nextgen. graphics are not everything you know. in fact they are nothing without fun play behind them :D

i am captian obvious! :lol
