In the mood for an RPG...

Been awhile since I've played a really great RPG. I don't really play very many, but I'm really in the mood for one now. I'm looking for something with a great story, and good artistic value. Story is the most important though.

I've been mostly deciding between giving FFX another shot(I played and beat it before...but somehow my mom got caught up in it and always wanted to watch when I was playing it, which kindof ruined it, I really liked the tropical flair it had though), or maybe picking up Shadow Hearts: Covenant. I never played the previous shadow hearts game(s?), but I've only heard great things about covenant.

And before the inevitable Planescape replies come in, I have the game sitting right next to me. It's one of my prized possesions =).

So....reccomend away. I'd prefer it to be a PS2 RPG, but computer may be okay.

Thanks in advance.

SMT: Nocturne or SMT: Digital Devil Saga.

Actually, based on your critiria DDS is probably the more applicable choice.

GET SHADOW HEARTS COVENANT. Fucking rules. First GAF-hyped game that actually lives up to the hype.

I highly reccomend SMT nocturne (I finally beat it 10 minutes ago! YAY!). Great open ended story and awesome art. If you like planescape theres a good chance youll like it (they have a lot of similarities aparently)

Digital Devil Saga and SH Covenant are also good choices.

demi, I was strongly considering SH2, but how is the first? I don't really want to wade through an RPG that I won't enjoy just to get to the "good stuff" in the second. However, if it's enjoyable in it's own right, and offers up an engaging plot, I might just go down that road. I'm just a bit wary because it's got some less than stellar reviews. Another Q about the plot, is it complex with lots of twists/revelations, or is it more straightforward? (For example, I think the Legacy of Kain series, if your familiar with that, is my ultimate story with all it's twists and turns).

You can totally get into SH2 without playing the first one, in fact that's what I'm doing right now. :P Story is full of twists and surprises, too.

Shit that's a lot of questions just shut the fuck up and buy it

but

The first graphically is not as good as the second. Here's the obvious part.

Second, the battles are pretty much the same, without the addition of the "combo" feature, which I myself find pretty stupid in SH2, but hey it works.

I haven't finished SH2 myself, but, I found that SH1 was *very* good from start to finish, I was always compelled to play just a little more. I believe it offers a very good plot, you will enjoy it. They're both good. Both start off slow, but eventually start to ramp up and escalate more and more, which is what I like.

Besides, Yuri Hyuga (Urmnaf rofl japanese) is the fookin' man. He's very much like Ryudo (in badassitude), but doesn't PUSSY OUT. RYUDO IS A FAKE

I wouldn't say it's exactly complex either, this is no "Legacy of Kain" (apples and ORANGES DAHUR HUR?).

Now, let me get into my demi mack mode

ahem

You're in the mood for an RPG baby, why not sit back and relax with a bag of fritos and a 24 pack of Fresca and cuddle up to the warm glow of that PS2 power light with a copy of Shadow Hearts, and Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Baby, you'll go on a ride that you'll 56.5% chance forget.

If you prefer your game more "advanced" (I use this term loosely, I've never played the following games -->), by all means take the other suggestions and plunk down on SMT Nocturne/DDS.

But listen, let me just get straight to the point

demi seal of approval, both games

highly coveted award

get them

thanks

Yeah you can play SH2 without having played the 1st, thats what i did ,although i only played for a couple of hours... got really sick of the encounter rate in the 1st dungeon (I think it was an abandoned subway tunnel or something).

Alright demi, I suppose you've bullied me into picking them up. I was only planning on one, but I s'pose SH1 and 2 it is. Hopefully I can get some good trade in deals on some old games cuz I definately don't feel like dropping that much money on a couple RPG's.

Thanks everyone.

If you want some humor, play The Bard's Tale--the remake, not the original.

Funniest game I ever played. Seriously.

"So one final thought before I depart,
And this my friends comes straight from the heart.
We'd all be fine if not for that bell
And that horse killing wanker that opened up hell.

Nukelavee! Oh Nukelavee
We cannot win we must admit
Who could it be who set you free?
He really must be a dimwit.

Nukelavee! Oh Nukelavee
You're big and evil and heinous
Who could it be who set you free?
He really must be an anus."

I would recommend playing all of FFX.

After that, I would also recommend SMT Nocturne or Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (which you can probabaly find for $20) Those aren't very story heavy though. So if you do want a story heavy game, I recommend...

Xenosaga Episode I (greatest hits, so $20)

i'm playing SH2 right now and i never played the first... i'm close to the end, and i have to say that the story in the first few hours suffers a bit because you don't know what the hell is going on... it gets much better later and eventually you don't even notice... i like it about as much as FFX, but it's very different. The combat is a lot of fun (maybe a bit too easy most of the time) it's lengthy enough and has plenty of secrets, and it's FULL of over the top humor.... i think one of the IGN reviewers called it the "evil dead" of rpg series, and i have to agree. very very fun game, and extremly unique. As of right now it's in my top 5 rpg's this gen, although i've missed out on several important ones (and am currently in the process of catching up)
