Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction impressions (IT'S GOOD)

Matlock

Banned
The skinny: It's like a retarded, angry version of Spider-Man 2.

You're in an open city where everything's going on. You're green, you're big, and you've got an assortment of moves of which to unleash upon the world.

This is your playground.

You are the Hulk.

And you go from there.

The demo offers two minutes of delicious gameplay in a small city locale. The Big Green Monster drops not so subtly on top of a gas station to start the demo out with a bang. Now here's your first problem--puny humans shooting firearms at you. Do you pick up a bus and throw it at them? Squish them with your hands? Or run through the gas station (literally) across the street and get 'em with the blast?

In this game, you have that choice.

Do enough damage, and the army will send strike teams of helicopters and mechs. Helicopters can be taken down with a couple of well placed blows when jumping, but the mechs are a stronger breed. I particularly like running up the side of bulidings, waiting for them to catch up, then piledriving them Haggar style into the sidewalk a few hundred feet below.

Apparently they're much more to the game,, including underground labs and desert environs...as well as more moves (ripping a car up and making them into impromptu boxing gloves, using a mobile missile launcher's turret as a shoulder-mounted, and other nasty things) and enemies to get your rage on against.

As is, it looks great and plays better.

Here's hoping the final version wipes the floor with it. :D

It's not up to the level of Mercenaries, tho. Not as destructive.

Mercenaries:GTA::Hulk:Spider-Man 2

It's not as good, but it's fun in its own right.

PLUS. PLUS. I just figured out you can grab a bus and use it as a fucking skateboard! Hardcore!

The game really is good. It was high on my list of fun playable games at E3. It woulda been number one, but I had a blast playing two player Katamari (which I actually didn't expect, though I love Katamari Damacy).

You can jump in and do all kinds of crazy and fun stuff. The game has a ridiculous amount of moves. You can pick up a truck, and smash it flat, then run with it as a shield. Then if you want, you can jump forward and throw it under your feet, then land on it and surf down the street watching cars and people fly every which way. At E3, in the Hulk demo there, I grabbed a giant inflated balloon animal (as some advertisement for some fake company in the game), and I floated around in the city with it, slowly gliding down to the ground. You can go into a destruction run where you just plow forward, destroying anything you touch. You can attack highrise buildings until they collapse, piling into rubble. It's just a blast to play. And it doesn't require a large investment of time to get the fun out of it. Great fun.

Let me tell you, I was stuck as a videogame tester on the first Hulk game for all three current gen consoles. I really hated it on too many levels to recount. I have no bias towards this game or series. I even hate Hulk as a character. But this game really is fun.

Edit: It's also nice to attack tanks with cows :)

Just wondering: The Hulk isn't a villain. Why would he be running around destroying cities full of innocent people?

Cause he is dumb as shit. He doesn't have that much control either, so he might end up messing up half the town to handle a couple of thugs. :lol

Maybe it's an evil city full of baby eaters. I don't know the story of the game yet. You do get missions to destroy certain (evil) buildings, but it's like GTA where you have the freedom to do your own thing (however evil it may be) apart from the missions.

Anyway, I don't think Hulk is a hero or villain. I think he's just a huge mass of strength and destruction without any judgement to back it up.

No as a long time reader of Hulk, that's too much of a stretch... the Hulk is most certainly NOT a villain... what he is, is slow, dim-witted, with a child level intelligence... and incredibly f'n powerful... not a good combination... temper tantrum anyway?

Nice, I was impressed after reading the previews and watching the vids.

And this just confirms my purchase.

Oh and Matlock, mind telling me where you got the demo, is it in the new OXM/OPM or did you play it at E3?

Yeah, I haven't even put my demo in. Does it have the same stuff as in the E3 demo? I'm too lazy to find in my E3 junk. Any attacking tanks with cows? Or just that city level?

Though I hate Matlock and his favorable opinion is usually a kiss of death for any game/movie/book/artist/show/theatrical work/poem/painting/you get the point, I will have to interject and say that yes, this Hulk game is freakin cool. Hopefully they don't just ride the gimmick of tearing up a free-roaming city and completely ignore content in the game (ala Spider-Man 2).

*hi-fives CK*

I just hit LEVEL 12: CATASTROPIC DESTRUCTION

Had 2 helicopters, 3 tanks, and 1 mech coming at me at a time. :lol

This game comes out tomorrow. Any of you guys picking it up? Saw the video review at IGN and it looks like fun. The reviewer says that the bosses are the best since DMC3 and GOW. It's dry season right now so I could see renting this game. Last I heard the XBOX demo was in 720p, I wonder if the final version will be as well?

I played the final version (XBox & PS2)) this weekend at Vivendi Universals booth at GenCon. Spent a good amount of time playing as well as watching other people play. EVen talked with the reps about what made the game so great, and they're hoping the fans like it a lot. The game is fun as hell sheer destructive mayhem and great control! Don't judge this game by the time limited demo that's out now you have to play the final version. I was going to try to pass on this game, but I have to say it put a big smile on my face. Definately worth checking out (i.e. you need to at LEAST rent this one, it's fun).

Hulk is definitely one of those comic-licensed games that was surprisingly good at E3. The distinct lack of suckiness was quite refreshing.

HAH, That was a perfect thread opener. I get that impression whenever I see previews of this game.

Not sold on picking it up but Matlock hasn't steered me wrong with his Psi-Ops and Mercenaries pimping.

Because they got smart in developing it. They got one of the writers of the comic (Paul Jenkins) to actually "design" the game by scripting how all of the interactive parts will play out instead of just writing the cutscenes like most comic-licensed games do. Ultimate Spider-Man is doing the same thing with Bendis.

I might buy it, if someone can tell me the Hulk's secret identity.

Huh?

Bruce Banner.

I thought everyone knew that.

No wait, it's Bill Bixby

Sounds like a review in progress...

I watched a few early vids and the Hulk didn't seem to have the momentum/inertia you'd expect from his bulky mass. It seemed too easy to get him up to speed. Is this true in the demo?

You've got to realize that his muscles are strong and reactive to the point where he's been able to run at sublight speeds before. :)

The video review at IGN has gotten me interested. However, does anyone know how long the game is? It's seeming more like a rental to me, unless it has some good replay value, unlockables, etc. etc.

EDIT: No sooner do I post this then another thread shows up about the 1up.com review posting of the game, in which they say the play time is 10-12 hours. Sounds like a rental/budget buy to me...

And yet you dare invoke Haggar? Shame!

I went to best buy and got attacked by a crazed Nintendogs crowd and then realized this game isn't out yet is it?

Good answer on the Hulk infos peoples!

Stuttering, awkward mess. At least the GCN demo.
There's nothing fun about it.

I dunno, I played a little at walmart the other day. I walked away with a smile. Its mindless fun. But I haven't played it on the other systems, so I guess the cube version could be inferior.

Got it today. It's lots of fun and there are tons of moves to "buy." Once you get fluid with the controls it's a fast paced game. Like Matlock said, picture spiderman 2, and put the Hulk in Spideys place. You can grab people and punt them off the top of buildings... lol
Those with a 5.1 sound system will appreciate the audio in this game, although it's too strong on the bass and it will rock the walls if you're not careful. 720p on the XBOX cleans it up and makes it crisp, but the visuals are not really good by any means (again like SM 2). It's a definite rental and a buy for huge fans of the comic.

this game is great fun. like a more interesting spider-man 2. it remains fun for a much longer time that that game to just goof around in the city, plus the missions and challenges are better. very much deserving of the reviews though I want to see if there are more classic villains further on.

I'd say this game is a must buy. Gamespot was right though about graphics drastically looking shitty then good depending on whats going on.

But honestly this is the most fun I have had in some time playing a game. Sure the misson variation is not as great as San Andreas but even the missions where you need to retrieve items I'm having a great time. Its just too damn fun to pass up people.

I was just in an EB, holding the game in my hands, remembering the GAF positive impressions, but still I resisted (and picked up Metal Slug 4/5, AW DS and Pac 'n Roll instead). One more positive impression is probably gonna make me crack. You bastards.

I only has me teh cube and teh ps2 which version is the far more superior of the two?

According to the reviews the PS2 versions is supposedly less buggier of the two. I have the XBOX version and I see minor bugs here and there but nothing that affects gameplay so far.

You still made good choices, but I hope you crack soon and commence tha jigglin.

I like it and it`s easily better than Spiderman 2. The only small complaint I have is that I wish Hulk could jump even longer/higher/faster. And run faster.

Still, it`s pretty amazing the way it is and a HUGE improvement ove the movie game. Hope this does well as it really deserves to.

You see that massive purple gorilla blow up doll. Pick it up and fly baby ;)

just bought this game. haven't played long enough to give full on impressions, but so far it is REALLY REALLY good... like maybe the best gta style game i've played other than the actual GTA games... much more polished than spider-man 2.. and i love the way this game encourages you to just go chaotic and unleash mayhem. i just bought my first few moves and it appears that the move set is actually deep and usefull... there is enough difficulty at times so that you will find reasons to use most of your tecniques, at least thats the way it seems so far. Everything is very well thought out, and overll the game seems much better put together than most of the free roam games i have tried. i hope this is fairly long.

anybody know if a harder difficulty is unlocked when you beat it? cause i could see myself taking advantage of something like that in this game.
