Indie Game Awards Disqualifies Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Due To Gen AI Usage

Agree if that was the rule, but even having that rule is just so virtue signaling. There will be a point (not so far) that even if a dev doesn't actively use AI, the things they are working with might have been developed with AI, tools, IDE, engine, etc etc. then will they disqualify everyone ?

Rallying to protest against the use of AI in games dev for indies, is like WWII soldiers going to war against German cows. You're simply fighting the wrong battle.

For most indies, there simply are not jobs to protect for writers, actors, etc because there's usually an skeleton crew team of a hand full of devs wearing all the hats are trying to bring everything together.

Indie games is probably the best space for leverage technologies like this; to empower small teams to be able to "do more with less" and to be able to realise their visions and compete with the larger studios on a leaner and meaner setup.

E33 is the testament and major breakthrough proof point for this. Small indie team built an amazing, world class game that not only sold gangbusters but netted them GOTY, typically reserved to the best Nintendo fair and the biggest budget, highest production value titles.

Fuck the indie awards.

You don't support indies by advocating they remain entirely uncompetitive against larger studios who themselves will heavily adopt AI whether these fuckers like it or not and accelerate even their own ability to collapse production time/cost and build games better, faster & cheaper.
 
Its pretty clear to me what an "indie game" is now.

1) No publisher
2) If your game's total budget is less than 1 million you are exempt from rule 1.
3) If your game's budget is over 5 million you're also not an indie game, even with no publisher.

That's really it. Indies have no publisher. However, if you're independently wealthy enough to do anything you want with zero restrictions and make a $40 million game without a publisher then it makes no difference. If you're a super small game like Little Rocket Lab that cost less than a million to make, it doesn't really make a giant difference if you're published by Serenity Forge.

Clair Obscur is definitely not an indie game.
So where was your outrage when Balatro won?
 
Eurogamer crazies are having another meltdown in their comments over this story. I swear most of them would be better of just quitting gaming and doing something else with how often their blood pressure goes up over the daily AI stories that the site gleefully feeds them.
 
From what I've gathered from reading this story in multiple places, they had placeholder A.I art (for a newspaper or something tiny) that was meant to be replaced before launch, but when they realised the issue they patched it in like 3 days. Some people are acting like they simply made the whole game with A.I and and are blowing everything out of proportion. Some weird little babies have acted personally insulted this game deservedly won GOTY, but the fake rage is just laughable.

The indie award group already knew about this issue a long time ago and this just screams attention seeking to try and scold the GOTY with their grandstanding. They apparently had a live Twitch stream that maxed out around 50 viewers which also could add to the self exposure through outrage claims.

This is nothing but a derangement syndrome of the highest order.

AI is an invention of man that will allow us to save lives. It will cure cancer. It will reduce or eliminate so many diseases that we will start having to plan around living longer. It will care for us mentally and physically in the years to come.

Yet some want to stop it. Out of fear. The fear that it will take over their livelihood.

This isn't a new fear. It's something that humanity has faced for generations. It's something that humanity has faced since humanity has begun. The fear of change that has surrounded every technological disruption created by our species.

What is different this time? There is one thing. This time the change mainly affects the upper end of our caste system. It only affects the "smart" people who have jobs that are mostly theoretical. The artists. The thinkers. The engineers. The executives. Oh, ESPECIALLY the executives. The upper end of society with the loudest voices. This time the big technological change isn't looking to make redundant our janitors. If you have a super shitty job it is likely AI won't be taking it from you. If you have a cushy job, watch out. This has never been this way. Disruptions without fail have always only affected the little guy. And being the little guy, few protests were waged. There was no push to slow down progress in order to save the little guys job, no matter how many were displaced.

Yet now here we are, on the precipice of replacing this upper caste with the very machines they themselves created.

There really is nothing funnier.
 
AI companies scrapped the entire internet without consent.
A human artist also scrappe the internet and use copyrighted material for inspiration and training, and internet is filled with human fanarts from copywrighted material that they did without asking for permission.
 
The whole AI "controversy" feels completely manufactured to me. I would not put it past AAA companies being terrified of a game proving you do not need massive budgets or bloated teams to succeed. Instead of engaging with why it worked they push a narrative that discredits it. You can dislike the game. That is fine. But this feels far more like industry backlash dressed up as concern.

My input, little babies needa get use to ai being a toolset to help developers ship a game faster. Only a fool wouldnt let his team use toolsets to help their team be more productive

Because, use of AI isn't limited to creating temporary art or assets. Will they check the game code? Did the developers use AI when creating the game code (Engine)?Sound? And so on. The scope of AI use has long since expanded beyond creating assets.

P.S - My personal opinion is that AI has become so deeply integrated into game development that it will soon be impossible to draw these lines. Otherwise, developers will simply have to request the game's source code and check it in its entirety, which, of course, no one will do.

They will absolutely be using opus 4.5 agents or the latest gemini to be checking their code, writing code and so on already... but like everything with AI, it still needs a human eye to monitor it. You'll definitely know the games who dont do as such.

And thats just the baseline entry level things they'll be using models for.

The neo-luddite AI derangement haters are forming their counter culture.

Instead of trying to get everyone on their side they are lashing out at us for not hating AI as much as they do.

In the end they will alienate us and drive us all into the arms of AI.

Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake.

I'll be honest I'd rather battle it out in the comments, using logic, and changing their minds....

...but without AI there aren't enough mods on Earth...

So we will just have to let this play out.

AI is a tool. Devs can decide for themselves where and how they use it. I'm confused why it needs to be so explicitly explained to the audience/consumers that more often than not have no experience with development how exactly it was used.

It's as if I described building something and people took issue with me utilizing an electric screwdriver over a normal screwdriver. Does my screwdriver no longer have a job? Perhaps or maybe there are circumstances where it is still the best choice.

I know people are angry about the potential it has to displace workers, but people need to adapt to this change. Resisting it is stupid at this point.

Having said all that, if this organization wanted "No AI" then, that is their rules.

If you developed a game completely on your own what exactly is your 7m budget going to?

Just because a publisher is made up of a coalition of developers, doesn't make it any less a publisher (an argument I literally saw last week on here) "B-b-b-ut they're made up of developers."

In the same argument, was Returnal considered "Indie" since Housemarque was an indie dev with Sony publishing prior to Sony buying them?

Nobody called that an Indie game. They even had 3 times less people who worked on it. Where do we draw the line?

Hades & Hollow Knight are self-published as an example.
