Indie Games 2014 [June] Now Voting - Post 538!

Mega post inc

Limited time IndieGala bundle with Windforge, $1
http://www.indiegala.com/wind

Does anyone have impressions of Windforge as it is now? I remember at launch it got slaughtered...

Also - did any of you guys get round to playing SARCIA? It's still dirt cheap and is piquing my interest.

Some new stuff on the Twin Souls Kickstarter, mostly about Assassins Masks.

d425b4b6421e01c57e10d16f1258318b_large.gif

SO good - such a massive step up from what I played a few months ago. Can't wait for it.

Originally these guys were just to be "decoration". I decided to make them an actual enemy.

Again - this looks better and better all the time, I'm super jealous :p

This looks incredible - but I can't even think about 2015, way too much coming out this year as it is.

As for voting - I'll update this list later but so far..

So I played Windforge for about thirty minutes, and I have mixed feelings.

I really like the art style, the controls feel solid, and it's a world I certainly want to explore and see more of. The grappling hook is fun to use. I like that actually gathering materials to craft is really fast here. You're not chipping away a tree to get wood; your drill obliterates trees in seconds, and you can easily mine and dig with your drill. Repairing items and your ship is equally fast. There's a sense of direction rather than aimless exploring compared to similar games. I like that the combat feel fast-paced and is more gun-focused than a game like Terraria and has some bullet hell/precision platformer elements as you evade projectiles.

On the other hand, the game feels unpolished. Guns seem weak and not satisfying to use. The designs for enemies and creatures are interesting but the animations are really poor, seem unfinished. (I think your animations are good though).

So the positives here are the world, the art style, the combat, and the change of pace compared to other exploration/crafting games. But the game does feel unpolished in areas.

I can't comment on airship combat yet, will do once I've played more

Hey baddy, what was the plan now to get you to play Jet Force? Let me know if you need it gifted before the month ends.

Yup we made it, thanks for the congrats! Was up for 30 days too, feels good to be Greenlit that fast.

And congrats to all the other titles too, whoever may be reading.

Crawle - £2.00 (PC)
autumn.png

http://sleepystudios.itch.io/crawle

Crawle is a sandbox game with a focus on realistic survival: Live off the wilderness, hunt animals, manage your body's health and craft new tools and armour in order to survive.
The game features dynamic environments (through the seasons system) as well as many underlying stats (including blood content, body temperature and combat skills) that you need to manage and control throughout your time in the wilderness.

Since Black Ice is Greenlit now it is probably a good time to mention that you can get the game for $6. The price will be going up every major update until it reaches the final price of $20. If you are interested I would consider purchasing now as the price has already increased once and the pace should be picking up. You can try the demo before you buy as well so no reason not to at least check it out.

Edit: Have we talked about Sunless Sea in one of these threads? It is coming to Steam Early Access on July 1 and it is an interesting game. I can write a little something up for the next months thread if it hasn't already been discussed.

I would be interested in this.

It's on a few of our radar's already - I'm under embargo on it but it definitely deserves some more attention. Write away!!

That game actually out? I went to the website and it looks like you could buy something but it was a little enigmatic as to what state it was in.
It is Early Access right now, if you buy from their site you will get a Steam key when it comes to Steam Early Access on July 1. The roadmap of progress is on their site.

I picked it up the other day after Mike Laidlaw constantly talking about how great it was on Twitter. I am a huge roguelike (derivatives and variants included) fan and while Sunless Sea is different, it has a lot of aspects that I love. It is MUCH more exploration-based instead of combat. There is still combat involved but that is just another type of an event that can happen in the world. I am not really one to enjoy exploring as a main hook but the world is extremely interesting in the game and it keeps me coming back.

From a mechanics perspective, you have a variety of things you have to manage. Your ship consumes fuel, your crew needs food, terror sets in when you are in the dark too long and so on. All of the mechanics do a nice job of creating constant tension while exploring the world. Oh, and you can eat your crew if you run low on food, people seem to like that fact.

I am running out the door right now but if anyone wants to know more I can talk about specifics later tonight. I will write up something higher level and in the correct formatting for next month's post when I am back if no one else has by then.

Toma, have you keep up with Spacebase DF-9? How has it progressed lately? Is it worth getting?

I check their devlog once in a while since they tend to post regularly every 2 weeks. They added quite a few systems and polished the game a lot. I'd say the game is definitely worth a look, but its still very much an alpha in that there is still plenty of stuff that needs to be added in with the occasional glitches. Enjoyable, but hard to say whether I can generally recommend others spending $10 on it. If you need something to scratch the simulation itch, its worth it though, especially considering the devs really do care about the project still.

Thread is surprisingly quiet today

Anyway, I got my hands on the press demo for The Masterplan
It's a top-down tactical game about pulling off robberies and heists in the 70s. The demo is only one level, the small general store seen in the picture. Like most tactical games, you can control your criminals in real time, indicating waypoints and actions, or you can pause the game and queue commands.

The goal is to steal as much money as you can and then escape to the getaway vehicle. How you approach this scenario is up to you. The demo doesn't provide many options, it's pretty basic, but you can still choose when to strike, if you want to be loud and bloody or be controlled and non-lethal.

The game has a ton of promise. My first attempt. I sent my three crooks inside, spread them out around the store and then draw my guns to hold everyone up. As I forced the civilians and store owner to move to the back room, someone else walked in, saw what was going on and rushed to call the cops on the pay phone. Now I only had 30 seconds before the cops showed up. So I set one guy to start stealing stuff, but that took my attention off the owner, who grabbed a shotgun and started shooting. I killed him, but then the cops arrived and killed my whole team

Second attempt, I had my locksmith guy go around the back, keep one guy guarding the entrance outside and my third criminal holding everyone up from a better angle. I was able to get everyone into the back room and knocked them out, while the lockpicker was able to get into the safe. My lockout was subdued a few civilians but then a third saw and called the cops. But by then I had the content of the safe and we were able to escape

So yeah, the gameplay and concept is really promising and I can't wait to see the bigger heists and other elements the developers plan to add. The art style is really cool as well

The devs said now that the game is Greenlit, they hope to have it on Early Access sometime this summer

Sounds awesome MB - and thanks for the recommendation - I'm just about to install it.

I picked up Cloudbuilt in the Steam Sale and.. well... I'm not quite sure how I feel about it yet. It's not quite what I thought it would be I guess.

So I've been playing Jet Force (thanks Toma!) It's a cool retro platfomer-shooter, very challenging and a lot of fun. I like how it combines precision platforming/bullet hell elements as you jetpack around narrow platforms, avoid obstacles and projectiles, with the shooting action. The game is very varied, with a wide array of different enemy types to kill and weapons pick-ups and drones to utilize.

At least one aspect felt too "retro" for me and that was passwords. Such a feature was before my time, so instead of a nice nostalgic "oh look, passwords", it felt like an annoyance. Who want to remember passwords to maintain their level progress?

Controls are responsive, visuals are colorful and will appeal to fans of old school pixel styles

So yeah Jet Force is fun, tough, and varied. I think it's a game worth checking out if you enjoy the genre

I just made screenshots of the pw screens, so the passwords didnt bug me at all :p

Crossposting my new found love for Tales of Maj'Eyal, one of the most polished roguelikes I've played:

Seriously, Tales of Maj'eyal deserves a new thread. There is a free version everyone could check out so the thread probably doesnt need to be during the sale, but I basically sank my whole day into the game yesterday (7 hour train ride, woo) and its one of the most accessible, yet content rich roguelikes I've ever played. The well thought out UI and mouse controls probably help a lot there, or how the visuals are decent enough to give most information at first glance. I didnt like how the game started me initially in "adventure" mode, which means you got multiple lives, but once I changed to Roguelike, it clicked. Tense, a plethora of different skills, tons of unlockables, and the different classes actually play differently.

Its a bit of a waste that the overarching layout of the game wasnt randomized as well (instead of only the individual levels), which is basically the only negative I have about it. Every story dungeon is always the same length, with the same bosses and the same lore. The layout is still different with randomized events or places spawning in there, making them interesting, but the world map is pretty much the same all the time, which is a bit detracting for the feeling of roguelike exploration.

But a game that hooked me 11 hours on a saturday needs a new thread... eventually.

Oh and yeah, in 11 hours of playtime, I didnt get a single one out of those 1300 achievements, haha.

I picked up Cloudbuilt too, I think I thought it would be like a Mirror's Edge style game, with the devs emphasizing the parkour and ability to be fluid/multiple paths in a level. I don't know if I'm just terrible at it or something, but it feels like there are a lot of opposing ideas in the game. The shooting mechanic is probably the most frustrating part, I just want to free run but there are so many things stopping me from trying to do it, and the peashooter you have is awful.

They want you to get the best times, and yet the levels feel unintuitive/hard to navigate. Am I supposed to run past the enemies? Am I trying to do this in one life? If I stop to shoot the purple things and all the turrets my time becomes awful, and yet I can't seem to do the level without these things stopping me and a big red light across my screen telling me I'm getting hit. A very confusing experience, all in all.

It's honestly more that the levels are open to the extent where you'll barely ever have just 1 method of getting from point A to B. Sometimes the routes are tricky, requiring knowledge of more advanced techniques and not a lot of these routes are immediately apparent. Adds to the experimentation and exploration to get your preferred route.

Am I supposed to run past the enemies?
Sorta kinda. You're not supposed to take a whole lot of time with your enemies. Take down the purple pillar mines with small shots while moving, and any bigger enemies with a charged shot and a few smaller shots after. They will often slow you down if you didn't take them down quickly enough, but the goal here is just to run, jump and zigzag past them or take them down quickly while running. On first playthroughs through a level it's natural that you straight up stop for a bunch of them since it's not likely you know the best optimal jumps to make to just dodge them. There's even a "No Bullets" mode for a lot of the stages.

You're only really meant to do it in one life after you have memorized the level sufficiently. The death penalty is only 3 seconds per death, and on a lot of levels I've managed to get a C grade on my first completed run, maybe even B, with dozens of deaths adding to my time. Once you're going for the A's or the very rare S's, you'll want to do it in one life, by resetting the whole level and death count with L key when you goof up

Thanks for the reply, that makes a lot more sense. I guess each level is meant to be replayed a lot of times, maybe I'll take another swing at it.

It's been so long I had forgotten about it, but The Suguri Collection is coming out on Steam tomorrow. It includes two rather different games: the original Suguri is a shump, whereas Acceleration of Suguri is a hybrid shooter/fighting game (it's closest comparable is the Senko no Ronde games, if anyone has ever played them). Acceleration of Suguri is interesting to play with a friend (and apparently the Steam version has online play, but I'm not expecting it to work well) but your brain will melt after a while because of how stupidly fast the game is.

And just in case you're wondering, I have no idea why Suguri's zipper is so damn big, either.

Random thought, but has anyone kept up with the Invisible, Inc (previously Incognita) alpha?

I am really digging it, even at it's early state- Super fun game that reminds me of the old Tom Clancy game: Shadow Watch

exactly, it's honestly the most frustrating part of all these early access stuff - in this case, I'm glad I got to play it, but I think i'd rather have waited.

I have. Regarding levels or a campaign, game is still light, but the devs have improved and added to the game a lot in terms of mechanics

- Augmentation system
- Perks/skills
- Programs that hack into the system, offer special abilities
- Level progression
- New enemies and security systems
- Refined the controls and UI

Game is coming to Early Access this summer. Devs teased this, looks like the start of a campaign
