Indie Games 2014 [June] Now Voting - Post 538!

I have. Regarding levels or a campaign, game is still light, but the devs have improved and added to the game a lot in terms of mechanics

- Augmentation system
- Perks/skills
- Programs that hack into the system, offer special abilities
- Level progression
- New enemies and security systems
- Refined the controls and UI

Game is coming to Early Access this summer. Devs teased this, looks like the start of a campaign

That's what I'm talking about - campaign is hopefully going to be exciting

I wish I could play these old school RPGs like Toma does. I guess you need to have played at least one when that's all there was.

Not a frequent visitor of this thread, though I shall try to fix that, but I wished to stop by and say that I have several games on Desura and Steam, and one other, I'm giving away through ModBot in another thread.
A list of titles still available for grab is here. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=117895841&postcount=210

Thank you all to the wonderful suggestions, recommendations, and and tips for games over the course of these threads. All very helpful and appreciated.
Edit: One game I would like to give a brief highlight about is Isomer, a RTS inspired by XCOM and Dwarf Fotress.

So many games have you be the defending humans, as though simply being human is means you are a good person. Not here, where as a species where humans either refuse or an unable to talk to you give into fear or greed and start attacking you.

As an isometric tile based game in real time gives the game a quicker feel to XCOM, though one can pause if they wish to give orders, as battles occur and you control several different units depending on your situation. I personally prefer this set up to pausing and giving orders, as when I lose someone it feels harsher (in a good way) and makes me more determined to better use the terrain and strategy next time.

It is an open world game, randomly generated to provide different layouts and a good reason to always explore as you collect material and craft numerous items, resources, and buildings. Each coming into focus or having a point, even things such as weaker walls late game.
A lot of freedom can come from this as the only goal in the game is to keep a power core safe. Meaning if one wanted to build a large castle, a maze full of traps and key locations to keep certain units at to make it a dungeon defender like game one easily can. Likewise one could also seek out siege warfare to see how long they can last.

It is still being worked on, recently Greenlit by Steam, and will feature future enhancements in the future if things go well.

Just beat The Fall, I definitely recommend it. It had a really solid story and the atmosphere was metroid-esque. The puzzles were nice and never overly demanding, the game was pretty good about dropping small hints. The gunplay was pretty simple and not particularly difficult. Whenever you encounter an enemy you go into cover or camouflage mode and wait until the enemy stops shooting.

It is a bit short and ends on a cliffhanger though. One of the devs said that they plan on releasing part 2 in 8 months if the game does well enough.

So I've been playing Sunless Sea and I'm enjoying it

When the Kickstarter was going on, I hadn't been that interested...and then I checked out Fallen London

What an amazing world, a mix of Lovecraftian and Gothic elements, with a dash of steampunk and a sense of dark wit. It's extremely well written, bringing this dark atmospheric place alive with vivid descriptions. It's a world I wanted to explore more of and with Sunless Sea, I can.

Sunless Sea lets you explore the vast Unterzee, a sprawling expanse of ocean deep beneath the earth where grotesque things and terrible fates await those who dare venture into the abyss. As captain, you command your vessel and crew as you discover new lands, fight dangerous enemies, upgrade your ship with better parts and new weapons. Starvation, madness, mutinous crews, and horrors beyond comprehension await out on the black waters

You travel the sea, always mindful of your fuel, your food, the sanity of your crew. Pirates and worst things move across the water. Combat is quite interesting. In the damp dark of the Unterzee, light is your greatest ally. When fighting you have three category of actions: offensive (cannons, torpedoes, etc.), illumination, and evasion. Each action takes a certain amount of time to enact, and you can pause the fight and queue commands. You need to illuminate your enemy to be able to attack and also want to perform evasive maneuvers to reduce how illuminated your ship is. It's definitely an interesting take on combat, quite strategic

But the meat of the game is the exploration and discovery and the cost of pursing such goals. You encounter new places, collect weird and mysterious cargo from travelers, set out on quests, gather a crew, choose to stay among known islands or brave the suffocating dark of uncharted waters. Maybe your crew will go mad. Maybe you'll discover some incredible fortune. Maybe you'll run out of food and need to eat your mates to survive. Terrible fates await and like Fallen London, it's all delivered through such compelling atmospheric writing.

Toma is there an ETA for the next thread?

Hopefully today, because tomorrow to sunday I'll be on the road. Basically, it NEEDS to be today, no matter how I make it happen.

*curses the person who recommended Tales of Maj'eyal and the god of timing who timed my Maj'eyal addiction to be on time with a shit ton of stuff to do for work*

I'm gonna echo these thought. I'm having a lot of fun with Sunless Sea. It can be a bit of a mysterious game at first, the game has quite a lot of unusual lingo in both the stories and mechanics which you have to learn through play and the combat systems are odd at first. But once you get it then Sunless is a real cool open world exploration type game that does a good job invoking horror writings and the exploration expeditions of the last 200-300 years.

The new thread is just going to be you telling everyone to play Tales of Maj'eyal isn't it?

Heavy Bullets is pretty damn neat, I love the way it looks.

Now that was an especially bad Desura haul this month. I guess the Steam sale made people push back their game releases.

Which reminds me:

Tales of Maj'Eyal - Free Basic version / $7 Deluxe Version (PC, Mac, Linux)
RycZUyF.jpg

http://te4.org/

This game is, and I am not saying this lightly, one of the best roguelikes I've ever played. I love these games, but the way the game is structured, how the mechanics come together, the incredibly satisfying loot improvement curve, the way how most characters play fundamentally different and just how much stuff there is to find and see... is mind boggling. The initial release was an older game, but its still frequently updated, so I'll just honor it by including it here again. The game is not super pretty and screenshots might not be overly convincing, but its fan-fucking-tastic.

Don't know if this is new thread worthy, but one of the founders of Prismata released a blog post today detailing the inspiration, work required, and sacrifices made in designing their game. It's a delightful read on how an indie studio came together with a fantastic idea for a game!

Yes, it is. Make a thread called "Good read: Why I quit my PhD at MIT to start a gaming studio" and link that. Feel free to mention that we'll feature the game in the current Indie Game thread for July if someone checks it out and wants to post some impressions.

He's a Junior member so he can't make a thread.

Goddamnit, oh well. Someone post it again in the next thread, maybe me or Baddy (or whoever finds the time to do it over the weekend.
