Indie Games 2015 [October] Let's talk about anything Indie!

Thank you thank you thank you thank you! As I said, early Christmas... now to play it, lets see this beast of a game :D

Guys, FEZ is one of the most unique and brilliant games ever...

Dude, enjoy MotN. I 100%'d it on the 360 when it was first released. I seriously could not put the controller down. Fantastic game.

Urrg, my time with RPGs is way over. Played every SNES, Gamegear, N64, PS1, GameCube and GameBoy RPG there was. Not into it anymore.

Sounds like you're very familiar with JRPGs but you probably don't have much experience with WRPGs. They're very different. Most of them are still a time sink, though!

With so many game recommendations sounds like I am in for a treat :D

Hmm will have to think about that, 6 hours left until the price goes up, must do some research. If Mark of the Ninja let's me of course :D

I was mostly talking in general. As much as I love it, South Park plays like a very light JRPG so you may not be interested. (Fans of the show should get it in any case. It's one of the best licensed games I've ever seen.)

If you're like to see the best that modern WRPGs have to offer, wait for a sale on Divinity: Original Sin.

Added Divinity: Original Sin to my wishlist. That looks great. Thanks!

Yeah, if you haven't played a modern RPG, you should really give the genre another chance. Especially now that you're getting into PC games

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime looks beyond amazing to play with a friend and the trailer shows an AI pet to play alone. Looks brilliant to me. Might grab that one.

Teleglitch is on sale on GMG for $2.59
A hard as nails sci-fi roguelite shooter with really satisfying guns
tumblr_mejuv0tdGp1r2ni29o1_r1_500.gif

One of the spookiest games you'll find this holiday season, too. The oppressive feeling it manages is impressive considering the style and perspective. One of my favorite titles in the past few years!

Anyone played Outland? The color switch ability reminds me of Polara. Does it play like it or is even better?

I played it when it first came out on XBLA and enjoyed myself. The bullet hell elements gel very well with the platforming and polarity aspect. It can become a bit of a puzzle game with reaction-time-sensitive solutions but never overwhelming. Was a bit sad that the PC release seemed to go by with little fanfare.

Voting October!

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

Why?
Because we want to offer people who first step into the thread an easy go-to list for great games. Plus it gives more attention to the titles that really deserve it.

How?
Everyone votes on his top 10 games out of the ones that already have been released AND are mentioned in the OP (So everything in Post 2). I'll tally the results and put the best 5 in the next thread. A minimum voting count of 4 is required. Feel free to vote for games that you deem "important" or the ones that you enjoyed the most. Since this is a rather communicative thread, feel free to include a short description why these games ended up on your list. Every list entry gets 1 point for the overall ranking.

When?
This thread is still open until the end of the month, so you can drop your list in here whenever you want. You can also change your list up to the last day. I wont start the count before the last day of the month, so everyone has still time to revise their lists and play some games. Speaking of which, if you dont even KNOW 7 games to vote for, there are plenty free games in the OP to check out. Most of which are rather short too. Use the remaining week to catch up with 1 or 2 titles you didnt get around to yet!

Which?
Since the list got rather long, here is the complete list of games to vote for for this month.

Assault Android Cactus
Do I have to say anything else?

Towerclimb
A unassuming but really fun and challenging roguelite platformer. You need to ascend a tower, evading hazards and dealing with or avoiding enemies along the way. From spikes and laves to various monsters, you need carefully methodically work your way upward, using special potions to grant your guy with powers and buffs at the best moments.

Mob Inc
An fun but simple Ludum Dare entry that I'd love to see expanded. You're a lackey for the devil and need to kill heroes to meet your quota. As you kill more, you rank up, evolving into new forms and unlocking new abilities. It's a quick fast-paced arcadey action game.

---

1) SOMA
2) Assault Android Cactus
3) Jotun
4) Towerclimb
5) Trigonarium
6) Mob Inc

And then these are a few I have played, but not enough to really rank them

- Else Heart.Break(): Lovely visuals, awesome freeform puzzles with a hacking mechanic, and a small but dense open world
- Master Spy: Hard as nails precision platforming with a dash of stealth
- Tinertia: More precision platforming, using rocket jumps to deftly boost up walls, over gaps, and through obstacles
- Late Night Shop: A creepy horror game in a closed shopping mall, where you're stalked by mannequins that only move when you don't look at them. So don't look away
- Space Grunts: An arcadey turn-based action game. A lot of items and equipment and a fast pace compared to most turn-based titles. Currently on Early Access, planned for mobile as well

Oh my lord, Mark of the Ninja is absolutely amazing. I see why you guys love it so much. I like how you can try to finish the level without triggering alarms or killing anyone. I am going to have a blast with this game, everything about it is perfect. Waiting for the weeked to play it :D And this comes from a guy who doesn't like stealth games and never plays them. THANK YOU ANGST!!! <3 <3

And... 2 days until Galak-Z arrives :D

Also been watching videos about Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and I really really like it, seems like playing it by yourself without a partner is doable... going to grab it along Galak-Z when I get paid. Sure thing. Looks, again, very awesome.

It's a Metroidvania action platformer with some bullet hell elements. Definitely better

I got it and played it, is awesome. I got both blue and red powers, keeps getting better and better. Is gets its best when the platforming meets the changing colors mechanics. Really good one.

GreenManGaming is having a Halloween sale and is offering This War of Mine for... 6$... is it worth it?
Absolutely. GOTY material for me. Depends if you enjoy management elements though; half the game is managing your group, keeping them healthy and not too demoralized. The other half is scavenging places for supplies, stealthily evading bandits or resorting to violence if you have to

It was the first game that actually made me feel bad about my in-game actions. A bleak, depressing, grim, and affecting experience

Here are my impressions from the OT
Man, this is one bleak game. It's like someone took the kind of human-on-human survival I always wanted to see in a zombie game and gave it grim, gritty life. A gutted war torn cityscape, all pencil-sketched shadows and ruined structures, flashes of explosions outside. What a difference from another group-centric game like State of Decay; where that game was kind of arcadey and hopeful, here your people are just barely eking out a miserable day-by-day existence.

It's not a fun game, and I'm glad it's not fun. It's tedious and slow and tense and gripping, and you really grow connected to your group. Every moment feels like you're just barely hanging on by a thread. I really like the little details, like your survivor physically digs through rubble or how your survivors will sit and talk to each other.

Scavenging is the most intense stealth I've experienced in a while. The line-of-sight/sound based system from Mark of the Ninja works really well here and makes every location a foreboding unknown environment, hidden in shadows. Combat and violence in general is a last resort and when you do come across bandits or armed people...and you're weak and slow and only have a knife, the tension is palapable

I've played through a fair bit of Lovers in a Dangerious Spacetime solo and enjoyed it a fair amount, although the co-op play is far more fun in general. I usually slap the AI pet on shield duty and they do a reasonably great job at it, only slipping up when we are truly surrounded.

Yeah that's what I heard, that the AI pet is really useful and aims and defends really good. Thanks for the tip and for the motivation. This will be mine very soon (probably tomorrow or thursday) :D

Also sent a Steam friend invitation to you and a bunch of GAF members...

Damn, I bought TWoM on GMG and when trying to add it to Steam it says "Key Duplicated on another account"... really? Why? This sucks...

That's too bad. Hit up Customer Service and hope for the best. Hopefully you get a working key soon.

I just did that, in Twitter, replied the purchase email and sent a support mail. Hope this gets resolved soon, if they dont, my confidence in things outside of Steam will plummet.

That's unusual. Never had a problem with GMG or any store. Actually bought Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate from there a few days ago
Yeah, shoot the Customer Support an email; they respond fast

GMG is good people. They'll fix you up.

I stick with Steam, GOG and GMG.

I been contacted by the support team and they asked me for a screenshot (???) of the problem. I sent them 3 and a video. And they reached back and told me they refunded me the money (dont know how long it will take for it to arrive to the bank). So yeah, they fixed it.

Damn thats a shame - bought loads off GMG without issues - i wouldn't let this stop you from using them again - looks like you've just been v.unlucky.

Very unlucky indeed. But I just got paid and will try to buy it again hoping for the best :D

Lumino City is releasing on tablets tonight. The game's tactile puzzles feel like they were always meant to be experienced on touch

Galak-Z tomorrow! Finally, been wanting to play that game since the first screenshots.

This looks pretty fun. Trailer

Morse - Free (Browser)
3morse.png

http://alexvscoding.itch.io/morse

Break the bitter attrition of the Great War using timing, tactics and telecommunications in Morse.
Step into the shoes of a Morse code operator taking the war into her own hands. Before you relayed messages, but now you're calling the shots. Literally. Send co-ordinates for artillery strikes to cut off supply chains, batter trenches and shred recon planes.

Checked out the Exoplanets demo and it's pretty cool. Has a Risk of Rain vibe, and a vast array of abilities and equipment. In my second playthrough, I had a forcefield, double jump, a Yank ability, a powerful whip sword, and a carabiner tool that let me cling to and climb up walls

Ok, great, finally. Bought This War of Mine again, this time worked perfectly. And then went to have a peak and ended up playing two hours. So far I survived 8 days and my people are rested, happy and a bit hungry, but they have beds and most of the tools. But not so much to use in them. I raided a bit but only took wood and bricks those kind of things to build a better house. I think I am going to raid a bit, but need to wait for one of the characters to come back, he went helping a woman out. I thought the game was a bit more open world, exploring, building camps along the journey, but what I got is also phenomenal. After work I am going into a base a steal valuable stuff. Anything I need to know before going in my first big raid?

So, This War of Mine...don't want to say too much, but tools like the shovel and crowbar are important for saving time while scavenging.

But the most important thing to remember is everyone's a survivor

Well, payday arrived and is all good now. Now... Steam. Interested in Grow Home, Ori and Lovers. Let's see what happens when I get home... I will buy at least one...
Grow Home is really cool. A charming, free-form 3D platformer

But out of those, Ori is easily the best choice IMO. Just a gorgeous and challenging platformer

Ok I will take those tonight on my scavenge. Is going to be the big one. One thing This War of Mine has done is absorbed my imagination with the atmosphere it has. So far I find it... very special and intriguing, gruesome, compelling and amazing.

Grow Home looks gorgeous with a unique premise, Ori is a metroidvania and Lovers seems intense and fresh. Hard choice. Hard hard choice.

Grow Fun is a lot of fun, especially if you're starved for a good 3D platformer. But as much as I loved it, I did find it got kind of repetitive by the time you reached the end

But since you said one of your favorite genres is Metroidvania platformers. I have to keep pushing Ori. It's so much fun, so fluid, and just an absolutely beautiful game.
